Shade Acres About

When planning a camping trip or an Ohio getaway, understanding the full picture of a destination is key to a successful and enjoyable experience. Shade Acres, located in Port Clinton, OH, on the scenic Catawba Island, is a campground that has been a part of the local landscape for some time. It offers a range of lodging options, including cottages and presumably RV or tent sites, catering to different preferences for experiencing the Lake Erie region.

It is important for prospective visitors to be aware of recent guest feedback, particularly concerning the condition of some of the cottages. While the ownership/management is noted for being "very kind and welcoming" and even organizing "Halloween activities for the kids," some reviews highlight challenges with the upkeep and cleanliness of the cottage accommodations, citing issues like "horrible sewage odor," "outdated" conditions, and "bad shape" mattresses. These specific concerns, particularly regarding cleanliness and maintenance, are significant considerations for those planning a stay. Conversely, the "floors in the main area at least were updated and looked cleaned," suggesting efforts in some areas. While the aim of this content is to be informative and slightly promotional, it is crucial to present a factual overview based on available public data. Therefore, potential visitors are strongly encouraged to set expectations accordingly, perhaps considering the camping sites over cottages, or reaching out directly to management for the most current information on cottage renovations and conditions, especially if booking a cottage.

Despite these specific concerns about certain accommodations, the "owner/manager was very kind and welcoming," indicating a positive human element to the experience. Conclusion: Why Shade Acres is Suitable for Locals (with considerations)

For Ohio locals, Shade Acres in Port Clinton presents a campground option strategically located on Catawba Island, offering convenient access to the abundant recreational opportunities of the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region. Its long-standing presence suggests it has been a part of many families' summer memories over the years, and the reported kindness of the owner/manager, coupled with efforts like organizing children's activities, points to a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere. For those who prioritize location and proximity to popular destinations like Put-in-Bay, Kelleys Island, and Cedar Point, Shade Acres offers a practical base for exploration without extensive travel from within Ohio.

However, it is crucial for prospective visitors to approach a stay at Shade Acres with informed expectations, particularly regarding the cottage accommodations. Recent reviews highlight significant concerns about cleanliness, maintenance, and unpleasant odors in some cottages. While management's efforts to engage with guests and address some issues (like updated floors) are noted, the overall impression for these specific units suggests they might be best avoided until substantial renovations are confirmed.

Given these considerations, Shade Acres might be more suitable for Ohio locals who are primarily interested in traditional RV or tent camping, where the focus is on their own camping setup, or for those who plan to spend most of their time exploring the nearby attractions and view the accommodations as a very basic sleeping option. If choosing a cottage, direct communication with management about recent updates and a clear understanding of the current state of specific units is highly advisable. For those seeking a prime location and a friendly face at check-in, and who are prepared to manage their expectations regarding older facilities, Shade Acres could still serve as an accessible gateway to the vibrant Lake Erie experience.

We just stayed one night in cottage 6 and if it wasn’t so late in the day when we got there, we would have tried to find lodging elsewhere. I came in with low expectations, but this was bad. The cottage was very outdated which is fine, but it had a horrible sewage odor throughout! The mattresses were in bad shape as well as the bathroom. It was pretty gross overall. I could have handled the out of date aspect if it didn’t stink so bad. It appears that they try to clean it but everything is so old that it will look dirty no matter what. The floors in the main area at least were updated and looked cleaned. The owner/manager was very kind and welcoming and had Halloween activities for the kids. They even left bags of candy for our kids who missed the trick or treating event. We were with another group who were in cottage 5 which smelled musty but did not have the sewage smell of ours. With lots of air freshener and open windows we made it through the night but I would never return or recommend. Hopefully these cottages get some updates and a good cleaning, because it could be a really great spot!

This is the most disgusting place I've ever seen. If the horrible conditions of the cottages don't drive you away immediately the roving crackheads will. If you are not ready to take care of the hungry wandering children of the owners do not go. You will not get what you booked and a whole list of excuses why. If your thing is staying in a water damaged bug infested 10x10 box this is the place. Needless to say we did not stay. We booked a 2 star hotel for only 70 additional dollars a night located 4 minutes down the road. Best decision ever. It is depressing to know that people can live in or be around such disgusting conditions. Let's please rename this from Shade Acres to Shady Acres.

Absolutely wonderful and far exceeded our expectations. My boyfriend and I came up for the weekend for my birthday and booked Cabin 3. We walked in, walked out, and walked back in to try to understand how it seemed so big inside and small outside lol. Queen bed, couch, TV and dresser. A little table with 2 chairs and full kitchen, full stocked with dishes, a stove and full sized microwave, coffepot and FULL SIZE FRIDGE. The bathroom was smaller but no different than most hotels. Cute decorations too and clean. I do not understand the few bad reviews this place has. It is a camp ground. I think the bad reviewers were expecting 5 star hotel fancy at a small campground cottage. It was not fancy or super updated but it felt like a home away from home. Everything worked as it should. The camp neighbors were very friendly, kids playing and well kept area. Management was nice and answered any questions we had. It was very quiet at night, and that AC unit kept us nice and comfy for sleep. I hope to be able to stay here each time we visit. Next time, we'll bring the kids, since this is obviously a family friendly camp ground. Thankyou guys for being a big part of my wonderful birthday.

I came up here to stay and it’s close to the jet express, since we were doing things at Put in Bay. Cute little cottage to stay in, and we wanted a cottage with a kitchen with it and they immediately upgraded us to that cottage which was very nice. We ended up leaving a day early and they said they would work fast to get us a refund. Everyone was friendly and I enjoyed staying there.

I kept a open mind when arriving, the cottages were small on the outside, but looking inside I was a surprise. You would never think all of what was inside, 3 twins and a full size bed was inside with a full bath. The campground was very clean and easy to navigate. The staff was totally awesome and friendly, we loved our stay and will return. P.S. Chayla I loved the recipe. Thank You
