Introduction / Overview
For New York residents seeking the ultimate outdoor experience in the stunning Finger Lakes region, the Six Nations Camping Area at Watkins Glen State Park is a premier destination. This expansive, well-maintained campground is not merely a place to pitch a tent; it is the official, amenity-rich base camp for exploring one of the state's most famous natural wonders: the Watkins Glen gorge and its 19 spectacular waterfalls. The campground is named in honor of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, reflecting the rich history of the area.
Boasting over 300 sites, the camping area is divided into loops—such as Cayuga, Mohawk, Seneca, and Onondaga—offering a mix of tent and trailer sites, including some with electric hookups. Visitors consistently praise the courteous staff and the meticulous upkeep of the grounds. While the campground is situated atop a steep hill, its elevation provides a sense of peace and separation from the hustle of the gorge's main entrance. It is highly valued for its clean facilities and, above all, its unrivaled proximity to the state park's trail system, making it an essential part of the complete Watkins Glen experience.
Location and Accessibility
The Six Nations Camping Area is strategically located at 1009 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen, NY 14891, USA, which is the official address for Watkins Glen State Park's main facilities. The campground itself is situated on the upper-level land of the park, offering easy access to the Upper Entrance area and its many recreational features. This location puts campers just a short distance from the stunning gorge, although the elevation means a walk is involved to reach the trailheads and village amenities. However, this positioning is what allows the campground to offer a comprehensive range of amenities not typically found closer to the gorge floor.
A key aspect of accessibility, as noted by local users, is the elevation difference between the campground and the main attractions. While the campground is nearly a mile from the pool and the gorge entrance, the park offers a convenient shuttle bus service during the summer season. This shuttle runs between the three main entrance areas (Main, South, and Upper), allowing campers to easily start their hike at the scenic Upper Entrance and take the shuttle back to their car after descending the 200 steps and winding path of the Gorge Trail. For those interested in the Finger Lakes region beyond the park, the campground is an excellent starting point for exploring nearby Seneca Lake, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, and the village of Watkins Glen.

As a flagship New York State Park facility, Six Nations Camping Area provides a full spectrum of services designed for comfort and convenience, accommodating both tent and trailer campers across its multiple loops.

The campsites are all at the top of a steep hill and everything fun is almost a mile walking distance from camp weather its the huge pool or the trails to the Glen. I suggest starting your hike "down the 200 stairs from the "upper entrance" otherwise youre climbing up way more than climbing down stairs. Drive to the upper with the whole bunch and have one person pay the $6 to take the shuttle back to your car. Shuttle stops at 5:30 pm. Pool hours changes a little each day during the hot Summer months. ☀️ Most beautiful view from the glen!
Aug 12, 2025 · Brendi noNameStayed in the campground at a tent site. Very well maintained with courteous staff. The trails for the entire park are very nice. Of course if you want to get the gorge to yourself. Go at sunrise. People start trickling in around 7am.
Jul 29, 2025 · Sarah PyleCamping, wonderful and quiet during the day but just when you think 10 pm is rolling around people get very loud and very obnoxious. My experience was until past midnight. Foul language, loud music and at least one laughing hyena. The little ones at the camp were very very very well behaved but the adults some seniors were over the top. Someone pulled in with a large RV and proceeded to run his very loud generator from 6 p until 9:30 p when someone implored him to please stop. The hiking was fantastic but not sure I would stay at the campgrounds again. Watkins Glen Village has so much to do, don't miss it. Seneca Lake too!
Jul 26, 2025 · Renae HammelBeautiful, hot showers, some electric hookup and some without. Camping. New York State Parks. Play ground, hiking the gorge, plenty of barbecue grills for picnic or camping. Close to town.
Jun 08, 2025 · Mark ChrzescianOverall really nice stay. Bathrooms and campgrounds were well taken care of and felt safe. Family friendly campgrounds and great walking proximity to the entrance of the Watkins Glen Park trailhead.
