This article aims to provide a factual and informative overview of the campground, incorporating both its reported amenities and significant concerns raised by past residents, to help local South Carolinians make an informed decision.
Campgrounds and RV parks play a vital role in providing flexible living and vacation options, from short-term stays to more permanent residences. While Stoney Crest Plantation Campground has been noted for its location and some basic amenities, it's crucial for prospective campers and residents to be aware of the full spectrum of experiences reported by those who have stayed there. Understanding both the positive aspects and the challenges is key to finding a suitable and comfortable environment.
Our goal is to present a balanced perspective on Stoney Crest Plantation Campground, drawing directly from available public information and customer reviews. We will cover its location, the services it offers, and highlight features that may be appealing, as well as crucial points of concern regarding management and interpersonal relations within the park. For locals in South Carolina, especially those considering a longer-term stay, this comprehensive overview is designed to help navigate the decision-making process.
While some describe the landlord, Bill, as a "great guy" and the place as "nice," other reviews raise serious issues regarding the owner, Ms. Betsy, and her approach to tenant disputes and general property management. These insights are vital for anyone evaluating Stoney Crest Plantation Campground as their next temporary or permanent home in the Bluffton area.
Stoney Crest Plantation Campground is located at 419 May River Rd, Bluffton, SC 29910, USA. This address places it within the Bluffton area, a charming and rapidly growing town in South Carolina's Lowcountry. May River Road is a significant local artery, providing relatively direct access to various points of interest.
The campground's location in Bluffton offers a balance between a potentially quieter setting and accessibility to nearby attractions. Bluffton is known for its historic Old Town, diverse dining options, unique shops, and artistic community. The May River itself offers opportunities for fishing, boating, and scenic views, making the area attractive for those who enjoy outdoor activities.
Furthermore, Stoney Crest Plantation Campground's proximity to larger coastal destinations is a notable advantage. It is conveniently located near Hilton Head Island, a major tourist hub famous for its beaches, golf courses, and upscale amenities. This means campers can easily access the vibrant offerings of Hilton Head while staying in a potentially more secluded or less expensive setting in Bluffton.
For RVers and campers, being on May River Road provides a relatively easy approach for larger vehicles, connecting to wider road networks for travel within South Carolina or to neighboring states. While the reviews mention a tranquil atmosphere, the presence of a main road might mean some level of traffic noise, which is a factor for some campers. Overall, the location offers a blend of local charm and regional accessibility for those exploring the South Carolina coast.
Based on public information and general expectations for campgrounds, Stoney Crest Plantation Campground offers fundamental services essential for RV and camping stays. However, the quality of some services, particularly management-related ones, is a point of concern in customer reviews.
- RV Sites with Hookups: The campground provides sites equipped with full hookups, including electric (30/50 amp), water, and sewer connections, catering to RVs of various sizes. They also accommodate tent camping.
- Restrooms and Showers: Public facilities for restrooms and showers are available for campers. One review, however, mentioned these facilities were "in dire need of a super cleaning and updated refurbishment," indicating potential issues with their upkeep.
- Laundry Facilities: A coin-operated laundry facility is on-site, offering convenience for longer stays.
- Swimming Pool: There is a swimming pool available for guest use, providing a recreational option, especially during warmer months.
- Playground: A designated playground is present for children, making it a potentially family-friendly option.
- Nature Trails: The campground reportedly offers "two beautiful nature trails to explore," appealing to those who enjoy walking and experiencing the outdoors.
- On-site Manager: A landlord named "Bill" is mentioned as a "great guy," suggesting a presence of on-site management for daily operations and assistance.
- WiFi and Cell Reception: Wi-Fi is listed as available, and cell phone reception is also noted.
- Pet-Friendly: The campground is pet-friendly, with general rules about keeping dogs on a leash.
It's important to note that despite the listed amenities, some reviews highlight significant dissatisfaction with the overall management's responsiveness to issues and their handling of resident disputes, which impacts the perceived quality of services.
Stoney Crest Plantation Campground offers several features that can be appealing to campers, though it's essential to consider these alongside the reported challenges from residents.
- Full Hookups for RVs: A primary convenience, offering water, electric (30/50 amp), and sewer connections at sites, making it suitable for self-contained RVs.
- Family-Run and Quiet Atmosphere: Described as a "family-run campground" and a "quiet place to hide away from the world," suggesting a potentially peaceful and low-key environment for relaxation.
- Recreational Amenities: Includes a swimming pool and a playground, providing on-site leisure options, especially for families with children.
- Nature Trails: Features two nature walking trails, appealing to those who enjoy walking, hiking, and exploring the natural surroundings.
- Shade Trees: The presence of "plenty of large trees that offer great shade in the summer" is a significant advantage, particularly in the South Carolina heat.
- Proximity to Local Attractions: Conveniently located near Bluffton's historic sites and the May River, and just about 10 miles from Hilton Head Island, offering easy access to beaches, golf, and other tourist destinations.
- On-site Laundry: Coin-operated laundry facilities add practical convenience for extended stays.
- Wi-Fi Availability: Internet access is provided, which is a key amenity for modern travelers and long-term residents.
- Pet-Friendly: Welcomes pets, allowing campers to bring their furry companions along.
However, it is crucial to balance these highlights with the serious concerns raised in reviews, particularly regarding owner conduct and guest/resident protocols, as these can significantly impact the overall experience despite the available physical amenities. The "trouble with their visiting guest protocols" and reports of arbitrary evictions based on "their word over ours" are significant considerations for prospective campers, especially those planning longer stays or expecting visitors.
Based on the provided customer reviews and general public information, specific, advertised "promotions or special offers" for Stoney Crest Plantation Campground are not detailed. Campgrounds of this nature often rely on their established rates, location, and basic amenities to attract guests, rather than frequent, publicly advertised discounts. The reviews focus more on the operational aspects and management interactions than on pricing incentives.
However, it is common for campgrounds to have varying rates based on the length of stay (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly rates) and the time of year (seasonal adjustments). For those considering a stay at Stoney Crest Plantation Campground, the best approach to inquire about pricing and any potential offerings would be to contact them directly.
- Inquire about Long-Term Rates: If you are considering a stay of several weeks or months, ask if there are discounted weekly or monthly rates available, as some long-term residents are noted.
- Off-Season Specials: Depending on the demand, there might be lower rates during less popular seasons.
- AAA Discounts: As listed on AAA, they may offer discounts for members.
It is always advisable to confirm all pricing details and what is included in the rate directly with the campground management before making a reservation. Given some of the concerns in the reviews, it would be prudent to get all terms and conditions in writing where possible.

When contacting the campground, especially given the feedback from previous residents, it would be beneficial to ask specific questions regarding guest policies, maintenance schedules for facilities (showers, restrooms), and the process for resolving any disputes or issues that may arise. Direct communication is key to understanding the current operational environment of the campground.
Stoney Crest Plantation Campground, located at 419 May River Rd, Bluffton, SC 29910, USA, offers a blend of amenities and a location that could appeal to some locals in South Carolina, particularly those seeking a more rural or quiet camping experience near coastal attractions. However, prospective campers, especially those considering longer-term stays, must approach with significant awareness of the reported challenges regarding management and interpersonal dynamics within the park.
For South Carolinians who own an RV or enjoy camping, the campground's features such as full hookups, a swimming pool, a playground, and nature trails provide basic recreational opportunities. Its "pet-friendly" policy is also a plus for those traveling with animals. The strategic location near Bluffton and about 10 miles from Hilton Head Island is undeniably convenient, offering access to beaches, golf, dining, and other popular activities without being directly in the midst of the busier tourist hubs. This could make it an attractive spot for locals looking for a short getaway or a base from which to explore the Lowcountry at a more affordable price point than some luxury resorts.
However, the suitability for locals is heavily tempered by the highly critical feedback regarding the owner, Betsy, and her alleged arbitrary decision-making, particularly concerning resident disputes and evictions. The concern about "their word over ours" and the reported lack of inquiry into incidents are significant red flags that could create an unstable living environment. Additionally, claims about the poor condition of public facilities, such as restrooms and showers, indicate a potential lack of investment in guest comfort and hygiene.
Therefore, while Stoney Crest Plantation Campground offers certain amenities and a desirable location, its suitability for locals in South Carolina hinges on an individual's tolerance for potential management-related issues and the condition of facilities. For short-term, self-sufficient campers who prioritize location and basic hookups, it might serve a purpose. However, for those seeking a welcoming, consistently well-maintained, and secure long-term community, or for families who prioritize a high level of responsive and fair management, the existing reviews suggest a need for extreme caution and thorough personal investigation before committing to a stay.
Customer Reviews
Definitely seemed like a nice place and the landlord bill is a great guy but the owner Betsy is not a friendly person. I lived here for almost 2 years and some people have been there longer and I guess they are friends with the owner but all I ever did was work and go home until a neighbor stepped out of line and said something to my husband about our animals and when he told them to mind their own business. They called the owner and said things that weren't true and had us evicted. I have a 13 year old child but to her it was their word over ours. Be careful if you decide to go that route.
They are rude, not approachable. They don't look out for their own family. Gotta drunk living in the gas fumed garage that doesn't even acknowledge his grandkids and doesn't want to help them. I drove one of the golf carts which messed up and had a electrical short, the cart threw me to the ground when it took off by itself, no one asked me if I was ok. I've had cervical spine disc 5,6 replacement since then. They got compensation for my accident and didn't offer me or my granddaughter anything , no even to ask if we were ok
This is clean park with mostly full-timers. Our neighbor was growing several varieties of peppers and shared them with us which was great. We loved visiting the nearby small towns even more then Savanna and Hilton Head. This is a basic park but we like it for the location, price and people.
I stayed here in my RV for 4 months. Very inexpensive monthly rate and included everything, pretty good internet too. I liked the convenient location to everything, Savannah and HHI. The laundry area was clean, working machines and again very inexpensive. The women's bathrooms was kept clean but a little dimly lit. The owner was very nice and always super helpful. My only real complaint is the way the campground was arranged and how close I was to my backside neighbors. My bedroom area was right next to their bedroom area. Campers don't have very thick walls so I tv's and conversations could be heard from the other camper.
My daughter and I moved in and shortly after were being harassed by a bunch of drunks that lived beside us. Every time we would go outside our camper, they would start making rude comments or commenting on our conversations. I complained to management only to be told that we were the problem. In the middle of the night at approximately 4 a.m. a car drives in with music playing very loudly and then you are awakened by someone near your camper trying to steal something. Every morning same time. Anyone can drive through the campground at anytime and even though it says there is video taping of cars within the campground, it is false. I was in fear for my safety and my daughter's safety the entire time we lived there.
