Are you a New Yorker looking for an accessible, yet truly refreshing outdoor escape that won't break the bank? We understand the appeal of getting out of the city and finding a tranquil spot in the state's vast natural landscapes. Look no further than the Sugar Hill Fire Tower and Recreation Area in the scenic Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. Situated near the charming town of Watkins Glen, this location is a fantastic destination offering both free camping and a wealth of recreational opportunities for local residents.
The Sugar Hill Fire Tower Recreation Area is the largest designated camping section within the expansive 9,085-acre Sugar Hill State Forest, managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Unlike many other campgrounds, this area operates on a first-come, first-served basis, providing a spontaneous option for weekend warriors and mid-week explorers alike. The primary camping area is a large, open field of approximately nine acres, which has been organized into 26 designated campsites. It’s a popular spot, renowned among experienced campers for its combination of free access and surprisingly well-maintained facilities.
Upon arrival, a self-issued camping permit must be filled out, a simple process that ensures accountability while maintaining the area’s free access policy. The maximum stay is generally limited to three nights without obtaining a special permit from a Forest Ranger, encouraging turnover and allowing more people to enjoy this exceptional spot. Whether you're pitching a tent or bringing a camper, you'll find sites that are semi-flat, with some offering shade along the wood line and others being more open to the sun. The atmosphere is generally peaceful, though weekends can see more activity, including a pleasant number of equestrians utilizing the extensive trail system.
Location and Accessibility
The Sugar Hill Fire Tower Recreation Area is strategically located in Schuyler County, a beautiful part of the Finger Lakes region known for its rolling hills, vineyards, and deep gorges. The campground’s physical address is:
3361 Tower Hill Rd, Watkins Glen, NY 14891, USA
This location places it approximately 10 to 15 minutes by car from Watkins Glen, a popular hub and gateway to the Finger Lakes. It's a convenient base for exploring the area’s celebrated attractions, including Watkins Glen State Park and the numerous wineries surrounding Seneca and Keuka Lakes.
Access to the main Recreation Area is generally open for vehicle traffic from the third Monday in May through the third Monday in October each year, correlating with the availability of running water in the restrooms. Visitors should note that the entrance road is typically gravel, but is traversable by passenger vehicles. The high elevation of the site also contributes to its spectacular views and cool evening temperatures, even in the summer months. For those concerned about staying connected, a significant advantage noted by prior visitors is the presence of a cell tower nearby, which provides excellent cell phone reception—a rare and welcome amenity in a primitive camping environment.

Best free campground I've ever stayed in. Open access fire tower with amazing views overlooking Keuka Lake. The bathrooms have running water, and there's a cell tower on site, which provides excellent reception. Plenty of sites with shade as well. You can stay here a maximum of three nights at a time.
Jul 29, 2025 · Draven ColemanCool little state park with a fire watch tower you can climb to top and get a great view of the surrounding countryside. Saw this place on maps and thought it would be cool to climb to the top of the tower. The tower stairs are steep and narrow and it looks not as tall from the ground, there are lots of steps. At the top you get a great view though. I visited at the peak of fall colors and just had some drop-dead gorgeous views of the New York Countryside. There was some camping and trails to walk around the state park. It was moderately busy when I visited. Definatley worth a trip here if your close or in the finger lakes region of New York.
Jan 27, 2025 · Adam ReasonGreat place to take sunset/night sky photos. A bit windy at times so if you plan on camping make sure you stake your tent down well. Tons of hiking trails throughout. Nice restrooms but no showers unfortunately.
Sep 08, 2024 · Drew WhiteFree campsite, very clean, found an empty spot, had a bench table, fire pit, trash can all in my spot. Restrooms were clean, people were nice, I just signed a document, that's it. Had nice trails for hiking. Close to watlkins glen state park 15 min drive to the main entrance.
Oct 09, 2023 · J MWe went here while looking to check out the farm sanctuary. It was a really cool place to come by! It’s a pretty tight tower up top but the views where fantastic! There’s a bathroom right below the tower as well which was nice. There are currently wildfires going on in Canada which is why in the pictures you can see a good amount of haze in all directions. It’s a cool piece of history here I’d definitely recommend checking it out if your in the area!
