For Texans seeking a genuine outdoor experience, a peaceful escape by the river, and a return to nature's tranquility, Sulphur Springs Camp in Bend, Texas, offers a unique and rustic destination. This long-standing campground, steeped in history and natural beauty, invites visitors to unwind by the Colorado River, explore the surrounding wilderness, and enjoy a host of activities that connect them with the heart of the Lone Star State's natural wonders. If you're an avid angler, a nature lover, or simply looking to unplug from the everyday hustle, Sulphur Springs Camp provides a setting where true relaxation and outdoor adventure go hand in hand.
Sulphur Springs Camp has a rich history, with locals touting the "extraordinary cures from the water" as early as 1858, making it a popular destination for its medicinal sulphur water. Today, the camp continues to be inspired by its namesake sulphur spring, which feeds its unique swimming pool. This natural spring-fed pool maintains a constant temperature of 68 degrees, offering a refreshing and fascinating attraction. Imagine taking a dip with the gentle flow of the river just fifty feet away, and perhaps even catching a glimpse of deer playing along the cliffs across the water – a truly unique Texas experience.
Guest experiences at Sulphur Springs Camp are varied, reflecting its rustic charm and distinct approach to camping. While some visitors have noted challenges, particularly regarding initial impressions or perceived "vibe," many others enthusiastically praise the camp for its quiet, friendly atmosphere and beautiful river views. Those who appreciate a more "down to earth" camping experience, focusing on nature and the riverside setting, find the price per night reasonable and the staff wonderful. The camp's strength lies in its natural features and the opportunity it provides for a serene riverside retreat, especially for those seeking to disconnect in an area with limited cell service.
Sulphur Springs Camp is located at 2935 County Rd 446, Bend, TX 76824, USA. This address places it in a secluded and picturesque part of the Texas Hill Country, near the village of Bend in San Saba County. While it offers a feeling of being "away from it all," the camp is accessible for Texans willing to venture slightly off the beaten path.
Access to Sulphur Springs Camp typically involves navigating gravel roads, particularly for the three miles of riverfront tent camping accessible by gravel road. Reviewers note that the main road to the camp can be a "little nerve-wracking due to washboard conditions and some impressive potholes," suggesting that a higher-clearance vehicle might be beneficial for certain areas, especially for tent camping spots down in the canyon. It's important to note that cell service is limited or non-existent in the canyon area, which for many Texans seeking to truly disconnect, is a significant highlight rather than a drawback.
Despite its somewhat remote feel, Sulphur Springs Camp serves as an excellent base for exploring nearby attractions. It's just a short drive to Colorado Bend State Park (approximately 4-5 miles away), known for its impressive Gorman Falls, extensive hiking trails, and cave tours. Nearby towns like San Saba, Lampasas, Llano, Cherokee, and Lometa are all less than an hour's drive, offering additional amenities, local dining, and charming small-town experiences for day trips. This blend of secluded natural beauty and reasonable proximity to local hubs makes Sulphur Springs Camp a strategic choice for Texans looking for an authentic outdoor adventure.
As a camp that emphasizes its natural setting and provides a range of accommodation options, Sulphur Springs Camp typically offers flexible pricing structures rather than flashy, short-term promotions. Their rates include daily usage fees per person, in addition to lodging fees for RV sites, tent sites, or cabins. For example, daily usage fees are $10.00 per person for ages 13 and up, and $5.00 for ages 2-12. This transparent pricing allows Texans to understand the full cost upfront.
For RV hookups, they can be rented on a daily, monthly, or yearly basis, which suggests that longer-term stays likely come with more economical rates compared to daily bookings. This is a common practice at campgrounds and RV parks in Texas, making it appealing for those planning extended visits or seasonal residency. Cabin rentals also have varying price points based on size (e.g., 2-bed, 3-bed, 4-bed, 5-bed cabins) and duration. To get the most accurate and up-to-date pricing for your specific needs, and to inquire about any potential seasonal or long-term deals, it is highly recommended to contact Sulphur Springs Camp directly.

I’m not one to leave reviews but felt it was necessary for this place. It was our first time visiting the area and were trying to decide if we would be camping another night. We pulled into this place to check it out (because basically every other campground we’ve ever been to has let us drive through it before paying for a spot) and the lady working the office was extremely rude, dismissive and seemingly not interested in our business. The place has campers everywhere that look like they’ve been there for years and the vibe was off from the get go. There is a campground north of this place that was way cleaner, way friendlier all around and extremely welcoming from the start. We’ll be staying there next time we are in the area.

Jun 05, 2025 · Ashley RandigA cat attacked my friends dog while we where on a walk. Not sure if it belongs to someone or if it's a stray or what. The water was nice and clean. Definitely recommend for a summer trip. The bathroom had a spider and a wasp in it though.
