Timber Creek Campground About
For Michigan outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize adventure and natural beauty over extensive amenities, Timber Creek Campground in Branch Township, Michigan, offers a compelling rustic camping experience. Nestled within the vast Huron-Manistee National Forests, this campground is a perfect basecamp for exploring the diverse landscapes and recreational opportunities that West Michigan is famous for. It’s a place for those who embrace the simplicity of nature, appreciate well-maintained facilities, and are looking for a central hub to launch their outdoor adventures.
Timber Creek Campground might not be the quietest spot due to its proximity to a main road, but its large, well-equipped sites, direct trail access, and excellent maintenance by the Forest Service make it a highly practical and enjoyable choice for true campers. Whether you're a seasoned hiker looking to conquer segments of the North Country Trail, a paddler seeking new river experiences, or simply someone who enjoys the peace of a campfire under the stars, Timber Creek offers a genuine Michigan outdoor experience.
Timber Creek Campground is located in Branch Township, MI 49402, USA. Its exact positioning is approximately 300 yards north off US-10, a major highway, which contributes to its accessibility for travelers across Michigan. While this proximity to the highway means "a lot of weekend traffic noise at most of the sites," as one reviewer noted, it also makes the campground incredibly easy to reach and serves as a highly convenient "central location for exploring the area."
This central location is a significant advantage for those looking to explore the wider West Michigan region. It's not far from Ludington, a popular lakeside city known for its beautiful beaches, lighthouse, and charming downtown area, offering options for dining out or enjoying Lake Michigan. The campground’s position within the Huron-Manistee National Forests provides direct access to a vast network of trails and natural features. The Pere Marquette River, a designated National Wild and Scenic River renowned for fishing and paddling, is also in the vicinity, offering numerous recreational opportunities. The closest store, about 2.5 miles away, provides essential "ice, cold drinks, some groceries and camp goods," ensuring that campers can easily resupply any forgotten items. This blend of remote-feeling natural immersion with convenient access to a main road and nearby amenities makes Timber Creek Campground a uniquely practical choice for Michigan locals.
As a rustic campground managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Timber Creek Campground provides essential services geared towards a traditional, self-sufficient camping experience.
- Rustic Campsites: The campground offers individual campsites generally described as "quite large." Each site is equipped with a grill, a fire pit (perfect for campfires and cooking), and a picnic table. There are both "shady and sunny sites" available to suit different preferences.
- Water Access: Potable water is available via a water pump. As one review noted, this pump is often used by "folks from waterless campgrounds," indicating its reliability as a water source. Campers should be prepared to transport water to their individual sites.
- Vault Toilets: Two vault toilets are available for sanitation. These are regularly serviced, as implied by the consistent presence of the Forest Service.
- No Electric Hookups: In keeping with its rustic nature, Timber Creek Campground does not offer electric hookups at individual sites. Campers should be prepared for dry camping.
- No Sewer Hookups: There are no sewer hookups or dump stations on-site. Campers with RVs requiring dumping facilities would need to utilize nearby public or private facilities.
- Daily Forest Service Presence: A significant service highlight, as noted by a grateful camper, is the almost daily presence of the Forest Service. This ensures prompt attention to maintenance, road repairs (as demonstrated after a storm), and overall upkeep.
- Trail Access: Direct "trail access right from the campground" is a key service, enabling campers to immediately embark on hiking or exploration.
- Large Campsites: The "generally quite large" sites offer ample space for tents, vehicles, and outdoor living, providing a more comfortable and less crowded camping experience.
- Direct Trail Access: A major highlight is the immediate access to trails directly from the campground, including the renowned North Country Trail (NCT). This is a significant advantage for hikers and nature walkers.
- Creek within Campground: A "small creek with two bridges" runs through the campground, adding to its natural charm and offering a pleasant natural feature. (Note: Campers should be aware that during severe weather, the creek can rise significantly, as detailed in one adventure-filled review).
- Well-Maintained Facilities: Despite being rustic, the campground benefits from consistent maintenance by the Forest Service, including road grading and prompt repairs after inclement weather, showing a commitment to visitor safety and comfort.
- "Real Camping" Experience: For those seeking an authentic outdoor adventure, the lack of modern hookups contributes to a genuine rustic camping feel, encouraging campers to fully immerse themselves in nature.
- Central Location for Exploration: Its strategic position makes it an excellent "base camp" for exploring a wide range of attractions and natural areas in West Michigan, including Ludington, the Pere Marquette River, and other parts of the Manistee National Forest.
- Shady and Sunny Sites: The availability of both shaded and sunny sites allows campers to choose a spot that best suits their preferences and equipment.
- Equipped Sites: Each site comes with a grill, fire pit, and picnic table, providing essential amenities for cooking and enjoying the outdoors.
- Proximity to Essential Supplies: The nearby store (2.5 miles away) offering "ice, cold drinks, some groceries and camp goods" is a practical highlight for convenience.
As a U.S. Forest Service Campground, Timber Creek operates under a standardized fee structure, and generally does not offer traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers." The value provided is in its affordable rates and access to public lands.
- Standard Fees: Camping fees are set and typically charged per night per site. These rates are generally more budget-friendly than those at private campgrounds.
- Interagency Passes: Holders of certain federal recreation passes (like the America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Pass, Senior Pass, Access Pass, etc.) may be eligible for discounts on camping fees, though specific applicability to Timber Creek should be verified on Recreation.gov or with the Forest Service.
- First-Come, First-Served: While not a promotion, the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis for its 9 sites. This allows for spontaneous trips but also means availability is not guaranteed, especially during peak weekends.
- No Reservation Fees: Unlike campgrounds that require advance reservations through platforms like Recreation.gov (which often have a booking fee), first-come, first-served sites avoid this additional charge.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees, availability, and any specific alerts (e.g., fire bans, trail closures, or issues with dirt bike misuse), prospective campers should consult the official Huron-Manistee National Forests website or Recreation.gov.

For Michiganders, this rustic campground provides an accessible gateway into the heart of the Huron-Manistee National Forests, offering "real camping" without the extensive travel often required for remote wilderness. The large, well-equipped sites (with grills, fire pits, and tables) provide a comfortable base, and the presence of a water pump and clean vault toilets ensures essential needs are met, even without modern hookups.
A key advantage for locals is its "central location for exploring the area." While the nearby highway traffic can be a trade-off for "peace and quiet," as one review candidly stated, the exceptional maintenance by the Forest Service, noted by a grateful camper who saw graders and gravel trucks quickly fix roads after a storm, ensures a well-cared-for environment. The challenge of occasional issues like misused trails or unexpected weather events, as one camper humorously noted about their "adventures," is often part of the charm for experienced local campers. For Michiganders seeking an affordable, convenient, and genuine rustic camping experience that serves as a launchpad for exploring their home state’s natural wonders, Timber Creek Campground is an excellent choice.
Customer Reviews
For my purposes this campground was almost perfect. The sites are generally quite large. There are shady and sunny sites, trail access right from the campground, water and two vault toilets. Sites have grill, fire pit, and table. It's 2.5 miles to the closest store .They have ice, cold drinks, some groceries and camp goods. This is a central location for exploring the area. It is about 300 yards North off 10. As with most things, there are trade offs. There is alot of weekend traffic noise at most of the sites. The trails get misused by dirt bikes, which are prohibited, but my first weekend over 50 guys (yes, I started counting) rode through the campground. Not the fault of the campground but it can be an issue. There is a small creek with two bridges in the campground. Well...there was a huge storm. Hail, lightning, torrential rain. The creek went up about 6 feet! Water came within 4 feet of my tent, and both bridges were under water. Why do my vacations always become adventures? Because the Forest Service comes through almost daily, by the time the water was down, graders and gravel trucks were there fixing the roads. I have to love those folks, you just can't ask for more. So for peace and quiet, this is not the place. However you might camp here to find your perfect place due to it's central location. Being an antique, this works great as a base camp for me. 2021, Last 2 weeks of July. Campground was busy on the weekends. During the week mostly vacant. It was very hot this year. I barely got the tent up before a storm hit. The worst of it actually missed. Yea! Day 2: I got camp set up properly. Lots of folks from waterless campgrounds were using the pump this year. This year's adventure, Gypsy Moths were everywhere. See photo of tent. I made sure to remove the eggs before packing up. I used a sponge with soapy water and a plastic 'store card' to remove them. I wanted to be sure to not transport Gypsy Moths home.
Great remote campground, 9 sites first come, water pump, vault toilets and right on the NCT. Only drawbacks you can hear road traffic and VERY limited cell service. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed hiking the NCT. Not to far from Luddington if you want to eat out.
I liked it because it gives access to the North Country Trail. Nice sites with picnic tables, grills and fire rings. There is water available (pump). The problem is the CG is on a very busy main highway with lots of tractor trailer traffic. There is no peace and quiet to be found as semis and car after car go flying by all day from about 4:30am until late at night. I stayed one night of a planned 3 night stay because of the noise. There are plenty of other USFS campgrounds to chose from throughout the Manistee NF.
Quiet usfs campground. Also has a hiking/ biking trailhead at the site as well. Very rustic, no electricity, no showers has unisex vault toilets. Does have firepits and charcoal grills at each site. Been coming here for almost 20 years.
Scenic place to do primitive camping (pit hole toilets, well water with hand pump, no showers, no electricity). Nice that it is along the North Country Trail. It is a little too close to the highway unfortunately and that disturbs the quiet but it is a nice cheap place to camp.
