Trackside Camping About
For folks here in South Carolina who live and breathe NASCAR, or simply enjoy the thrill of a live race, Trackside Camping in Darlington offers a unique and direct connection to the heart of the action. Situated in the immediate vicinity of the legendary Darlington Raceway, this campground is designed for the ultimate race fan experience. Unlike serene, nature-focused campgrounds, Trackside Camping embraces the vibrant, high-energy atmosphere that comes with being so close to a major racing venue. It provides a practical and convenient solution for those attending race events, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the excitement without long commutes or parking hassles. While it's a no-frills option focused on providing essential services, its prime location is its undeniable draw. For South Carolinians planning a trip to "The Lady in Black," Trackside Camping offers an authentic and accessible way to be part of the storied tradition of Darlington Raceway. It's a place where the roar of engines is your soundtrack, and fellow race enthusiasts are your neighbors, promising an experience that's all about the race.
Trackside Camping boasts an incredibly direct and advantageous location for race fans at 1101 Lamar Hwy, Darlington, SC 29532, USA. This address places it literally "trackside," offering unparalleled proximity to the historic Darlington Raceway. For South Carolinians, this means an effortless journey to and from the race track, eliminating concerns about traffic, parking, or lengthy walks on race days. Lamar Highway (also known as US-401) is a significant route that directly accesses the Raceway area, ensuring straightforward arrival and departure.
The accessibility extends beyond just the racetrack. While Trackside Camping is focused on the race experience, its location in Darlington, a well-connected town in the Pee Dee region, means that essential amenities are still within a reasonable driving distance. Travelers will find gas stations, convenience stores, and some local dining options in Darlington. Major interstates like I-95 and I-20 are easily accessible from Darlington, making it a convenient stop for those traveling from various parts of South Carolina or neighboring states. The primary highlight, however, remains its immediate proximity to the Raceway. This allows campers to soak in the pre-race festivities, hear the engines roaring, and experience the full ambiance of race weekend without missing a beat. For dedicated race attendees, the ability to walk to the track from their campsite is an invaluable convenience that truly defines the "Trackside" experience. This unique positioning makes it a top choice for those whose priority is being as close as possible to the heart of the NASCAR action in South Carolina.
Based on the provided reviews and the nature of a race-focused campground, Trackside Camping offers a core set of services aimed at providing functional accommodation for race attendees.
- Water Hookups: Guests are provided with access to water, an essential service for RV and camper needs. This is critical for drinking, cooking, and sanitation.
- Electric Hookups (30 Amp): The campground offers 30 amp electrical service at its sites. This is sufficient for many RVs and campers to run basic appliances, lighting, and at least one air conditioning unit, as confirmed by a reviewer who knew this detail going in.
- Campsites for RVs/Campers: Designated spaces are available for recreational vehicles and campers. While the type of site (e.g., gravel, grass) is not specified, they are set up to accommodate various sizes of RVs.
- Proximity to Darlington Raceway: This is a key "service" in itself, offering unparalleled convenience for race fans to access the track directly from their campsite.
- General Camping Environment: The campground provides a place to park and set up camp, allowing for overnight stays.
It's important for prospective campers to manage expectations regarding additional amenities. The reviews suggest a focus on essential utilities rather than extensive resort-style features. For instance, the discussion around generator use indicates specific rules that might vary from other campgrounds, implying a more direct approach to managing basic services. Campers should inquire directly about details such as restroom and shower facilities, waste disposal, or any other amenities they might require beyond water and 30 amp power. The simplicity of the offerings means it's a practical choice for those who prioritize location and basic utility hookups.
The features and highlights of Trackside Camping are almost entirely centered around its unique and advantageous position for race enthusiasts visiting Darlington Raceway.
- Direct Proximity to Darlington Raceway: This is the undeniable number one highlight. Being "Trackside" means campers are literally steps away from the action of "The Lady in Black." This allows for immediate access to race events, avoiding traffic and parking issues that can plague race weekends.
- Race-Centric Atmosphere: The campground is designed for race fans, creating a vibrant, communal environment where fellow enthusiasts can share their passion. The noise of generators during the day (as mentioned in a review) and the general buzz contribute to an authentic race weekend experience.
- Essential Utilities Provided: The availability of water and 30 amp power hookups ensures that campers have the basic necessities for a comfortable stay in their RVs. This is a crucial practical feature for an extended weekend at the track.
- Convenient for Race Weekends: For anyone attending NASCAR races or other events at Darlington Raceway, the convenience of camping so close to the venue is a significant draw, allowing for full immersion in the event. As one reviewer stated, they "will stay there every year."
However, it is vital for prospective campers to be aware of potential challenges based on available reviews. One review highlights significant issues with customer service and perceived harassment regarding noise policies. This suggests that while the location is prime, the management style and adherence to rules (like generator hours) might be strictly enforced and could lead to negative interactions if not understood upfront. The reviewer mentioned "rude and generally nasty" staff and "very nasty treatment," specifically regarding generator use and alleged loud music, despite signs indicating generators could be off later. This starkly contrasts with the simple "very good nice" and "will stay there every year" from other, more positive reviews. This divergence indicates that while some value the pure convenience, others may find the environment less welcoming due to interpersonal issues. Therefore, while its location for race access is a clear highlight, potential visitors should manage expectations regarding management interaction and ensure they are fully aware of and comfortable with all campground rules, particularly concerning noise.
As a campground primarily catering to race attendees and offering essential services, Trackside Camping may not feature extensive "promotions or special offers" in the traditional sense, such as seasonal discounts or bundled packages that a larger, year-round resort might. Their pricing is likely structured around the high demand of race weekends and the convenience of their location.
However, prospective campers interested in Trackside Camping should inquire directly about:
- Race Weekend Rates: The core "offer" will be the pricing for campsites during major race events at Darlington Raceway. These rates are typically higher than off-season camping but reflect the prime location and high demand.
- Off-Season Availability/Rates: While primarily race-focused, it's worth inquiring if they offer any availability or different rates during non-race periods. This could potentially be a quieter, more affordable option if you're not specifically there for a race.
- Early Booking Incentives: For popular race weekends, some campgrounds might offer a small discount or guaranteed better site selection for those who book very far in advance.
- Multi-Night Packages: It's possible they offer a fixed rate for the entire race weekend duration, rather than per-night pricing, which can sometimes provide a small saving or simply simplify booking.
- Group Rates: If planning to camp with a large group (as one review mentioned having "four sites"), inquiring about any group booking advantages might be worthwhile.
It is crucial to note that one customer review specifically highlighted issues with staff interaction, including perceived "harassment" over rules and general rudeness. While not a "promotion," understanding the campground's approach to rule enforcement (e.g., generator hours, noise levels) and how management interacts with guests is a vital piece of information to ascertain when contacting them. Prospective campers should be prepared to discuss expectations and clarify any concerns directly with the campground staff before booking.

For those who prioritize being as close as possible to "The Lady in Black," this is an unbeatable advantage. The campground provides essential services like water and 30 amp power, ensuring your RV stay is functional. While it's crucial to acknowledge the mixed feedback regarding customer service and rule enforcement (particularly concerning generators and noise), for many race fans, the unparalleled proximity to the track outweighs these considerations. The experience is about the roar of the engines, the camaraderie with fellow fans, and the unique atmosphere that only a trackside location can provide. If you understand it as a no-frills, race-focused environment and are comfortable with potentially strict adherence to rules, Trackside Camping offers an authentic and highly convenient way to experience the thrills of Darlington Raceway right here in our home state. For many, it's the tradition and the location that makes it the perfect annual pilgrimage.
Customer Reviews
The people that run the place are extremely rude and generally nasty. They only have 30 amp service which is fine and I knew that going in. I have a motor home and during the day I run my generator so I can cool it down with both AC units. The person behind me said the generator was keeping his grandchildren from going to sleep, which I personally don't believe. Anyway he apparently went to whoever is in charge and they came and demanded I cut it off.they have two signs that state generators must be off at 11:30PM and it was 8:00PM.I told them I would be shutting down shortly and that made him mad apparently. So much so he turned and came toward me in a threatening manner inches from me demanding the names of everyone in our group, we had four sites. The next night they came by talking about loud music which was all around us but they never stopped at any other site, just us to harass us.we ate in our late 50s and do not look like we are a problem but none the less very nasty treatment. Of your coming to the races to have a good time, stay somewhere else!
They have water and power. I will stay there every year.
Pretty roomy site considering the crowd. We camped here for Bojangles 500 this weekend. The owner, Steve Miles, is a super nice person! Most of his staff are friendly, professional, and accommodating. There was one grumpy old man who wasnt very pleasant, but he runs a tight ship. We had water and electric. One issue we had was people filling up inflatable pools. That reduced our ability to use water while the pools are being filled, as I am sure it did other campers. There was no issue with noise and the campground was kept clean. They did an amazing job with such a large crowd.
Had a problem with the vehicle that was being towed behind my motorcoach. Steve and his staff went out of their way to help me out. Looking forward to some NASCAR Darlington Motor Speedway fun
Had reservations for the 2019 race pre-paid. After an RV Share program cancelled at the last minute I notified Trackside Camping to see what they could do in terms of a refund. The owner took me inside upon arrival and gave me a FULL refund, cash in hand. It's very seldom these days when business owners do exactly what they said they will do. We ended up tent camping in his lot and had a great time in stumbling distance of the race track. Thanks again to Trackside Camping, we will be coming back for years to come.
