Turkey Bayou Campground is situated in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest, near Pomona, IL 62975, USA. This location places it within Oakwood Bottoms, a significant area known for its diverse ecosystems and outdoor recreational opportunities. While the address "Pomona, IL 62975" is general, the campground is specifically located next to a 20-acre lake on the Big Muddy River, close to the Big Muddy boat launch and the Oakwood Bottoms Greentree Reservoir.
Accessing Turkey Bayou requires navigating some gravel roads, with one reviewer noting a 4.4-mile gravel road that is generally in good condition. While this might suggest a more remote feel, it contributes to the quiet and secluded atmosphere that many campers appreciate. Despite its wild setting, the campground is within reasonable driving distance of larger towns, ensuring that essential supplies can be procured if needed.
Directions to the campground from nearby towns are available through the Forest Service:
- From Murphysboro: Take Highway 149 west 7 miles to Highway 3; then south 5.5 miles on Highway 3 to Oakwood Bottoms Road. Turn east (left) onto Oakwood Bottoms Road and continue 4 miles to the campground.
- From Jonesboro: Take Highway 146 west 8 miles to Highway 3, then north 8 miles on Highway 3 to Oakwood Bottoms Road. Turn east (right) onto Oakwood Bottoms Road and continue 4 miles to the campground.
Turkey Bayou Campground offers a back-to-basics camping experience, focusing on essential amenities that enhance the natural setting rather than providing extensive modern conveniences. This aligns with its free, primitive camping ethos. Services include:
- Campsites: The campground features 19 sites, each equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a lantern pole. These sites can accommodate both tents and RVs, with ample room for large rigs.
- Toilets: Pit toilets or porta-potties are available at the campground, providing basic sanitation facilities. However, it's important to note that potable water is not available at the site, so campers must bring their own drinking water. There are also no showers or sanitation dump stations.
- Fishing Access: Being next to a 20-acre lake on the Big Muddy River, the campground offers excellent fishing opportunities. The lake is home to various fish species, including largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and channel catfish. Anglers are typically allowed two poles with two hooks or lures attached. Electric motors are allowed on Turkey Bayou Lake.
- Curbside Trash Pickup: While some sources indicate no trash services, and the general rule for National Forest primitive camping is "pack it in, pack it out," specific reviews suggest a volunteer society helps keep the place clean. It is best practice to always be prepared to pack out all your trash.
The volunteer efforts, as noted by visitors, contribute significantly to the cleanliness and overall positive experience at Turkey Bayou, making it a well-maintained no-fee campground.
Turkey Bayou Campground offers several distinctive features and highlights that make it a cherished spot for Illinois campers:
- Free Camping: One of the most significant highlights is that camping at Turkey Bayou is entirely free, with a maximum stay of 14 days. This makes it an incredibly accessible option for budget-conscious travelers and those looking for an extended escape without fees. Donations are accepted by the "Friends of Turkey Bayou" group, which helps maintain the campground.
- Peaceful and Quiet Atmosphere: Reviewers consistently praise the campground for its serene and quiet environment. It's often described as a peaceful retreat, even during peak times, making it ideal for relaxation and connecting with nature.
- Location within Shawnee National Forest: Being situated within the vast Shawnee National Forest provides campers with immediate access to a wealth of outdoor activities beyond the campground, including extensive hiking trails, nature viewing, and hunting opportunities. The nearby Little Grand Canyon offers fantastic hiking.
- Waterfront Sites: Many sites are positioned directly by the lake or swampy lake area, offering scenic views and easy access for fishing and non-motorized boating (electric motors only on Turkey Bayou Lake).
- Volunteer-Maintained: The campground benefits from the dedication of volunteers, including individuals like "Jason" mentioned in reviews, who contribute to its upkeep and provide assistance, fostering a strong community spirit.
- Wildlife and Nature Viewing: The location within Oakwood Bottoms and proximity to the Big Muddy River makes it an excellent spot for birdwatching and observing diverse wildlife. It is a favorite with waterfowl hunters, but also offers excellent opportunities for general nature viewing.
These features underscore Turkey Bayou’s appeal as a truly immersive and accessible outdoor destination.
Turkey Bayou Campground is unique in that its primary "promotion" is its status as a no-fee campground. This means that, unlike many other camping destinations, there are no nightly or weekly charges for staying at the sites. The 14-day maximum stay allows for a significant, cost-free outdoor experience. While there aren't traditional "discounts" or "specials" in the commercial sense, the free admission itself is the most significant offer.
Visitors are, however, encouraged to make donations to "Friends of Turkey Bayou." These donations directly support the maintenance and improvement of the campground, as well as an annual fishing derby. Contributing to this volunteer-driven effort is a way for campers to give back and ensure this valuable resource remains available for future enjoyment.
It's important for campers to be aware of the "first-come, first-served" policy, as no reservations are taken. This means that while there's no booking fee, securing a spot, especially during popular times, depends on availability upon arrival.

First time been there, free camping with amazing spot by the lake. Managed by volunteer, Jason was very helpfull. Quiet place to stay
Love this place our kids have grown up here. The gental man that takes care of this place is very nice. Yes it’s a little ways back from the highway but close enough to town to get anything you need. We have meet a lot of nice people over the 20 plus years we have camped here. Best thing about the Friends of the Bayou is now we get watch our granddaughter grow up here to.
I give a 4 star because I feel like it needs to be mowed more than what it gets but other than that it's a nice little area!
A great place to hang out for the weekend plenty of fishing hunting great for tents and campers there is a spring-fed water on 3 before you come in
