For those of us in Arkansas who are drawn to the wild beauty of our state's untouched landscapes, the Buffalo National River holds a special place in our hearts. As America's first national river, it offers unparalleled opportunities for outdoor adventure and serene natural immersion. Nestled along its banks near St. Joe, Tyler Bend Campground serves as an ideal basecamp, providing a genuine and enriching experience for campers eager to explore this iconic Arkansas treasure.
Tyler Bend Campground isn't your typical amenity-rich RV park; instead, it offers a more rustic and authentic camping experience, perfect for those who truly want to connect with nature. Imagine pitching your tent under a canopy of trees, with the sounds of the river nearby, and the promise of a dark, star-filled sky overhead. This campground is renowned for its commitment to preserving the natural environment while still offering essential comforts, ensuring that your focus remains on the breathtaking surroundings and the activities that the Buffalo National River provides. Whether you're an avid hiker, planning a float trip, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat under a blanket of stars, Tyler Bend Campground is a prime destination for Arkansans looking to embrace the wild spirit of our Natural State.
Tyler Bend Campground is strategically located in St. Joe, Arkansas, with the address St Joe, AR 72675, USA. This placement is incredibly significant for its connection to the Buffalo National River, as it is one of the main developed areas and visitor centers for the upper and middle sections of the river. Its position makes it highly accessible for Arkansans traveling from various parts of the state to experience this iconic waterway.
Access to Tyler Bend is generally straightforward. It is located just off U.S. Highway 65, a major north-south route that connects to many communities within Arkansas. This highway provides a relatively easy drive, making the campground approachable for sedans and RVs alike, though the campground itself is primarily designed for tent camping. Once you turn off Highway 65, follow the signs that lead directly into the Tyler Bend area, where you'll find the campground and the main visitor center.
The location offers more than just ease of access; it situates campers directly within the heart of the Buffalo National River area. This means immediate proximity to numerous hiking trails that originate from the campground, leading to stunning overlooks and historical sites. It also serves as an excellent put-in or take-out point for float trips on the Buffalo River, making it incredibly convenient for paddlers. While St. Joe is a small community, nearby towns like Harrison or Marshall can provide access to additional supplies, groceries, and dining options, though visitors are encouraged to arrive prepared given the somewhat remote nature of the national river area. This blend of convenient highway access and deep immersion in a pristine natural environment makes Tyler Bend Campground an ideal and highly desirable spot for Arkansans.
Tyler Bend Campground, while emphasizing a more primitive camping experience to preserve its natural setting, offers a selection of essential services designed to enhance comfort and convenience for its campers. It strikes a balance between providing necessary amenities and maintaining a natural, undeveloped feel.
It is important for campers to be prepared for a primitive experience in terms of individual site utilities. However, the presence of clean restrooms, showers, and water fill-up stations significantly enhances the comfort level compared to truly undeveloped backcountry camping. These services underscore the National Park Service's commitment to providing a welcoming yet responsible outdoor experience along the Buffalo National River.
Tyler Bend Campground offers a collection of remarkable features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Arkansas, particularly those drawn to the unique charm of the Buffalo National River.
These features collectively create a rich and rewarding outdoor experience, making Tyler Bend Campground a top choice for Arkansans seeking to explore the pristine environment and unique offerings of the Buffalo National River.
As a campground managed by the National Park Service (NPS) as part of the Buffalo National River, Tyler Bend Campground typically operates under a standardized fee structure set by federal regulations, rather than offering commercial-style promotions or special discounts in the way a private campground might.
However, there are established federal programs that provide reduced camping fees at national park sites, which are significant "offers" for eligible individuals:
Camping fees at Tyler Bend Campground are generally low due to its primitive nature (no hookups). Specific fees can be found on the National Park Service website or Recreation.gov, where reservations for individual and group sites are typically made. The value provided comes from the pristine natural setting, direct river access, and well-maintained basic facilities, rather than monetary discounts.

There is a very nice setup to view the stars while camping in this Dark Skies park. I also recommend the trails directly at the campsite. Beautiful views plus some history. I was looking everywhere online for something about the bathrooms in case you wanted to shower while you go camping. There is a shower, it is very good for camping. It was clean when I went, but it sounds like occasionally things happen. However, it also sounds like they're pretty quick about cleaning things up. So I would feel safe about using them. If you are a person that needs a shower, when you go camping,
Apr 23, 2025 · Jesse NGood place to camp for hiking or preparation for a river trip down the Buffalo National River. Strictly camp sites there are no water or electrical hookups, but there are places to fill a water container placed around the campground. The group camping area is available with a restrooms. Clean restrooms and restrooms on mainloop have two showers. There is a Host in the campground to help with any problem or answer a question. There isn't a playground for kids there.
Apr 15, 2025 · Jack KeenGreat put-in location. We left a car there for our canoe trip and did about 60 miles down to the White River in 3.5 days. Tons of camping spots along the river on the way. Highly recommend.
Mar 14, 2025 · Cade CoffeyNice campground with clean bathrooms, hot showers and running water nearby. Very close to several trails to the Buffalo National River and lookout points. Easy access to kayak launches. Big trees for shade and nice pads for your tent. There's more stars than you can count once the Sun goes down. Highly recommend!
Sep 10, 2024 · C CogerI stayed at site 9 for 6 nights. It was awesome. Camp host was just a ways down. She was the sweetest lady and was very knowledgeable of the area. The bathroom/shower house was fair, I guess pretty clean for a campsite (I get spoiled at my regular campsite in Tahlequah where the bathrooms are clean as a hotel). Visitor center was awesome, full of knowledge, and super helpful. Several nearby hiking trails with beautiful creeks, bluffs, and cliffs. Also, there are multiple places within an hour to rent kayaks, canoes, or rafts. I would definitely go back! Thank you, Tyler Bend Campground - I had the best time, hope to visit again soon!!
