Location and Accessibility

Walnut Ridge Campground is conveniently located on US Hwy 190 W, Jasper, TX 75951, USA. This prominent location on a major U.S. highway ensures excellent accessibility for travelers and campers approaching from various directions. US Highway 190 serves as a vital artery connecting Jasper to other key towns and cities in East Texas, such as Woodville to the west and beyond.

The campground's direct frontage or very close proximity to US Hwy 190 means that finding and entering the park is straightforward, even for those driving long hours or arriving late at night. This ease of access minimizes the stress of navigating complicated backroads with an RV or towing a trailer, making it a practical choice for both short stopovers and longer stays. The ability to pull in and out quickly is a significant advantage for travelers.

Being situated in Jasper, often referred to as the "Deep East Texas Destination," means Walnut Ridge Campground benefits from proximity to the town's essential services and amenities. Campers have convenient access to local grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, and a selection of dining options. This ensures that any immediate needs for supplies or services can be met without extensive travel, enhancing the overall comfort and convenience of a stay.

A major draw of the Jasper area, and therefore a key aspect of Walnut Ridge Campground's location, is its close proximity to the vast Sam Rayburn Reservoir. This immense lake is a celebrated destination for fishing (particularly bass, catfish, and crappie), boating, and various water sports. Campers at Walnut Ridge are ideally positioned to take advantage of these world-class recreational opportunities, making it an appealing choice for anglers and water enthusiasts. The surrounding East Texas Pineywoods also offer beautiful scenery and opportunities for hiking and birdwatching, providing a rich natural environment for outdoor pursuits.

The ease of accessibility from a major highway, combined with the proximity to both town amenities and major natural attractions, makes Walnut Ridge Campground a well-located option for campers exploring or residing in East Texas.

Services Offered

Walnut Ridge Campground appears to offer a specific set of services designed to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience, particularly focusing on unique lodging options.

  • Screened Shelters: A primary and unique service offered are the "screened shelters to stay in." This provides a protected, semi-permanent structure that offers a comfortable alternative to traditional tent camping, shielding campers from insects and elements without the full setup of an RV. This is ideal for those who want a camping experience but prefer not to mess with a tent.
  • Fishing Access: The campground is highlighted as a "Great place to relax and fish." While not explicitly detailing on-site fishing ponds or direct lake access, this strongly implies that either direct access or very convenient proximity to excellent fishing spots is a key part of the park's offering.
  • Overnight Accommodations: The park caters to travelers needing a place to "sleep" after driving long hours, indicating its function as a reliable stopover for weary road-trippers.
  • Basic Site Provisions (Implied): While not explicitly stated, for screened shelters or any RV spaces, basic site provisions would typically include access to designated parking areas. For screened shelters, this might imply a basic platform or designated area within the shelter for sleeping.

Given the nature of a campground, additional common services might include:

  • Restroom Facilities: Although not confirmed in the provided information, campgrounds generally offer access to basic restroom facilities (e.g., flush toilets or vault toilets).
  • Water Access: Access to potable water, perhaps through shared spigots, is usually a standard offering, even for screened shelters or basic camping sites.

Prospective campers should confirm specific amenities like electrical outlets within shelters, communal cooking areas, or shower facilities directly with the campground management.

Features / Highlights

Walnut Ridge Campground distinguishes itself with several key features and highlights that cater to a specific type of camper, based on the provided customer reviews.

  • Unique Screened Shelters: The most prominent feature is the availability of "screened shelters to stay in." This offers a distinct advantage over traditional tent camping, providing protection from insects and a semi-permanent structure for comfort. It's a great alternative for those who don't own an RV but desire more comfort than a tent.
  • Excellent for Relaxation and Fishing: The campground is explicitly highlighted as a "Great place to relax and fish." This makes it an ideal destination for anglers and individuals seeking a tranquil environment for unwinding, likely due to its proximity to prime fishing waters in the Jasper area.
  • Convenient Stopover for Travelers: Its location on US Hwy 190 W makes it a "good place for anyone who is tired from driving long hours." This highlights its utility as an accessible and practical stopover point for cross-state travelers.
  • Immersive Natural Environment: The park is situated in an area where "there are wild animals." While this also points to a cautionary aspect, it underscores the feature of being deeply embedded in a natural wilderness environment, offering genuine wildlife observation opportunities for those who appreciate it.
  • Straightforward Camping Experience: For those who prefer a simpler, less amenity-heavy camping experience focused on outdoor activities and basic comfort, the screened shelters provide an efficient solution without the complexities of RV setup or tent pitching.

Important consideration regarding wildlife (as highlighted by a customer review):

  • Presence of Wild Animals: The experience of mountain lions surrounding a vehicle is a critical piece of feedback. While this highlights an immersive natural environment, it also serves as a strong reminder that the campground is located in a wilderness area where wildlife encounters, potentially with large predators, are a possibility. Campers should be aware and take necessary precautions, such as keeping food secure and being vigilant, especially at night. This is not necessarily a negative "feature" but a crucial aspect of camping in this location.

Promotions or Special Offers

Specific promotions or special offers for Walnut Ridge Campground are not detailed in the provided customer reviews. As a campground offering specific shelter types, rather than a full-service RV resort, its pricing structure would typically be straightforward rental fees for the screened shelters or any basic campsites.

However, interested individuals might find that campgrounds of this nature generally offer:

  • Competitive Daily/Nightly Rates: The "offer" often lies in providing an affordable alternative to hotels or more expensive RV parks, especially with the unique benefit of screened shelters.
  • Value in Unique Accommodations: The provision of screened shelters might be considered a "special offer" in itself, providing a distinct advantage and comfort compared to traditional tent camping, often at a reasonable price point.
  • Potential for Weekly Rates: While not confirmed, some campgrounds might offer slightly reduced rates for extended stays (e.g., weekly rates) for those looking to fish or relax for a longer period.

To obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information on current rates, availability of screened shelters, and any specific terms, prospective campers should directly contact Walnut Ridge Campground using the provided phone numbers. A good place for anyone who is tired from driving long hours, just be aware that there are wild animals in this location. My friend and I were traveling from Texas to Georgia and needed a place to sleep, we arrived around 11pm and been driving for more than 12 hours, it must have been about 3am when our vehicle was surrounded by two mountain lions walking around the vehicle while we slept, my friend was the first to notice them since he slept with his window fully opened and got startled by a low growl on his window spooking the mountain lion looking straight at him through his open window… after that we were fully awake and aware of the situation and decided to continue driving to the nearest town away from the woods.

Love the park, but a large church group of tent campers made us feel like we were camped in the middle of a playground. I love kids, but these were off the hook. Yelling and screaming and running a mock while the adults we’re playing volley ball until after 10:00 at night, right next door to us! No consideration or respect. It was so loud it was miserable. There should be rules to ensure all campers are able to enjoy the camp site they paid for.
