Ward’s Creekside Campground About

Ward’s Creekside Campground, previously known as The Water's Edge, is nestled along the scenic Shoal Creek in Joplin, Missouri. This campground aims to provide an immersive outdoor experience for those looking to connect with nature, whether through traditional camping, RV stays, or enjoying float trips on the creek. Its 43 acres are designed to offer a retreat from the everyday, with the natural beauty of Southwest Missouri as its backdrop.

The campground has a history of being a beloved spot for many, offering peaceful surroundings and a friendly atmosphere. While recent reviews indicate some significant changes and challenges, it's important for prospective visitors to understand the current situation and the amenities that are intended to be offered, as well as to seek the most up-to-date information directly from the management.

Location and Accessibility

Ward’s Creekside Campground is located at 6614 Old Hwy 71, Joplin, MO 64804, USA. This address places it just south of the main hub of Joplin, a city well-connected by major roadways in Southwest Missouri. The location along Shoal Creek is a significant advantage, offering direct access to water-based activities and a natural setting that feels removed from the urban bustle, despite its relative proximity to town.

Old Highway 71 provides straightforward access for vehicles, including RVs, making it relatively easy to reach the campground. Its position allows for convenient travel to and from Joplin for supplies, dining, or other services. For Missouri residents, it’s a manageable drive from many parts of the state, making it a potential destination for weekend trips or longer camping vacations without venturing too far from home comforts or necessary amenities in a larger city like Joplin.

Services Offered

Ward’s Creekside Campground offers a range of services designed to facilitate various outdoor experiences. Based on available public information, these generally include:

  • RV Hookups: Sites equipped for recreational vehicles, typically including electrical hookups (30/50 amp), water, and possibly sewer connections.
  • Primitive Camping: Designated areas for tent camping, offering a more rustic experience for those who prefer to immerse themselves fully in nature.
  • Canoe Rentals: The campground provides canoes for rent, allowing visitors to embark on float trips down Shoal Creek.
  • Day Passes: For those not staying overnight, day passes are offered for access to the grounds, including swimming and fishing opportunities.
  • Float Trips: Organized float trips on Shoal Creek, catering to different experience levels, from relaxing raft rides to adventurous kayak excursions.

It is important to note that recent customer reviews indicate some challenges with the current state of the facilities and management, which may impact the availability or quality of these services. It is strongly advised to confirm current service offerings and conditions directly with the campground prior to planning a visit.

Features / Highlights

Historically, and still intended as core offerings, Ward’s Creekside Campground features several elements that aim to enhance the outdoor experience:

  • Shoal Creek Access: The most significant highlight is its direct access to Shoal Creek, providing opportunities for swimming, fishing, and various float trips. The creek is often described as clear and beautiful.
  • Large Camping Spots: Positive feedback highlights that the camping spots are "large compared to ones we seen recently driving by," offering "extra wide area" for campers and RVs, which provides more space and privacy.
  • Diverse Camping Options: The availability of both RV and primitive camping caters to a wide range of preferences, from those seeking full amenities to those desiring a more rugged experience.
  • Float Trip Offerings: The variety of float trips available (rafts, kayaks, canoes) makes it a versatile destination for water enthusiasts.
  • 43 Acres of Natural Beauty: The expansive property allows for a true immersion in the Southwest Missouri landscape.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge recent critical reviews that mention significant issues such as "homeless everywhere," stolen items, concerns about the property's upkeep ("broken glass everywhere," "trash EVERYWHERE," "broke down cars scattered"), and a general "bad vibe." These reviews also state that "all of the mature trees" have been cut down. Prospective visitors should be aware of these reported conditions and understand that the experience may not align with historical positive descriptions.

Went down there this past weekend. Homeless everywhere. We ran to the store and came back and half of our stuff was stolen. Like a radio and phone chargers. The guy running it smelled like alcohol but acted like he was high. This place has really went down hill since the last manager left. I would not let my children or any children I care about be down there. The whole place had a bad vibe. We were frequently going and will NEVER return. This place is awful. There are adults living in tents with small children. They have cut down all of the mature trees-I’m assuming for profit and they have cut trees down and left what they couldn’t sell just on the beach. There was broken glass everywhere. It went from being a safe clean environment to absolutely disgusting. There are broke down cars scattered with the entire exhaust in the yard. And trash EVERYWHERE, clearly someone is using a picnic table as a refrigerator….

Formerly known as The Water's Edge!!Peaceful, friendly staff, they check on you to see if you are enjoying your time. Everyone we have met there has been friendly and the kids seem to all enjoy it. The dogs as well. Our new favorite place. Ty to the staff. Thought I would add that your camping spots are large compared to ones we seen recently driving by. I didn't realize that, but I am very happy with the extra wide area.

Listen, it's not a resort. It's a fun playful for grown-ups that you can bring your kids with to. What it may lack in people skills it makes up for with good maintenance, good help, and good checking around on every one keeping it safe as well. One time in our stay we had a prob with another camper and it was handled immediately. You may not have a bed and breakfast like scene but you get real Missouri people making a beautiful spot for casual un stuffy relaxing. You are allowed alcohol and marijuana if you don't act a fool. Marijuana is legal and it's an outdoor place there's no reason to hide it. If you don't like it I would just keep to yourself about it no one is going to push it. It's just a nice chill place, amazing spot on shoal Creek, shuttles and kayaks and canoes available to rent very reasonable price for wood as well Can't say enough about them, they helped us out when we were strangers and we were able to regain our footing after a personal disaster. Advise just be chill clean up after yourself and have realistic expectations of a small business Camp manager may be gruff but he won't tolerate shenanigans and that's a good thing

We LOVED this place! We parked here for $5 and floated down 5 miles from the double stilted houses along Old Scenic route road. Such a beautiful, quiet, wildlife filled experience! Debborah was extra helpful by letting us borrow life jackets and a paddle and with our vehicle when needed. She's such a sweetheart. I'd come back again. Thank you so much for the great time!

Wonderful experience, campground was clean and owners were very friendly and welcoming. Restrooms had showers with hot water and were clean. Owners were very informative and willing to answer questions when we called and happy to have us and 13 of our friends for a float trip. They also tent kayaks gor $55.00, and will shuttle you up to the drop off point for $15.00 if you have your own kayak.
