Introduction / Overview
White Pines Campsites, nestled atop Wallens Hill in the picturesque town of Barkhamsted, offers Connecticut residents a comprehensive and amenity-rich outdoor experience in the heart of the Litchfield Hills. This large, private campground is designed to cater to various styles of camping, from traditional tent sites tucked into wooded areas to full hookup RV spots and a range of rental accommodations like cabins and yurts.
Billing itself as a fun, family-friendly destination, White Pines Campsites focuses on providing a community atmosphere with abundant planned activities, a large swimming pool, and dedicated recreation areas. Many visitors appreciate the established feel of the grounds, with one customer noting, "This is our second year back. And we will be back again. It is our new tradition. Pleasant and helpful staff. Affordable camping and camp store." These campers praise the convenience of the clean restrooms, the pleasant staff, and the overall affordability, describing it as "an absolute hidden gem."
However, potential visitors should be aware of the campground's diverse atmosphere. While some sections or times of the week may offer the desired "peace and serenity," the campground is a high-volume, activity-focused destination, particularly on weekends and holidays. Some past visitors have expressed concerns regarding noise and the enforcement of quiet hours, with one review mentioning, "If you enjoy a party scene... this is a great spot. However, if you’re looking for peace and serenity in the woods, I do not recommend going here." This suggests that prospective campers should clearly communicate their preference for quiet or lively sections of the park when booking.
Overall, White Pines Campsites provides a complete, amenity-packed camping experience in Northern Connecticut, making it a popular choice for families and groups looking for an engaging and active getaway.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
White Pines Campsites is an excellent option for Connecticut residents, particularly those seeking a structured, activity-filled, and family-oriented camping environment close to home. Unlike more rustic state park options, White Pines offers an abundance of amenities—including a pool, on-site food options, full RV hookups, and organized weekend events—which minimize the logistical hassle of a getaway and maximize time spent relaxing or playing.
For local families, the consistent focus on planned activities and recreational facilities, such as the playground and GaGa Ball pit, ensures children remain entertained and engaged. For anglers, its location provides quick access to the globally recognized Farmington River for world-class trout fishing. The site's convenience in the Litchfield Hills also allows residents to easily explore nearby attractions, charming small towns, and the natural beauty of Northern Connecticut without a multi-state drive.
However, it is important for locals to understand the social nature of the campground. If you are seeking a lively, community-focused vacation with potential for noise and social interaction, White Pines is the perfect fit and an ideal location to establish a new annual tradition. If your priority is absolute solitude and quiet seclusion, you should confirm site location and be aware that the high level of activity, especially on busy weekends, may compromise complete serenity.

I’m going to start by saying the facilities manager was respectful, helpful, and heard our concerns. He was supportive and fixed issues we had immediately. We were compensated quickly for the lack of clean up of our campsite upon arrival. My issue with this place starts with overall management, as any concerns went through a call center that was never actually reported to the manager or owner. Our garbage was never picked up, toilet paper ran out of all bathrooms continuously, and bathrooms lost electricity a few different times. We complained about issues many times and nothing was addressed until we walked to the front to talk to the staff ourselves. Once people were talked to about loud music, they only waited 10 minutes to start with loud music again, which sounded like it was coming from a car stereo. There was loud music being played until after quiet hours (11pm) started, and people playing music that bled into other campsites, not respecting that some people may not like their music. People cheered and yelled late into the night. At about 12am we had drunk people drive right by our tent, stop, and start a conversation very loudly, which woke me up. They were not there visiting any other campers or to set up camp, but went for a ride and decided it was nice to have a conversation by us sleeping in a tent. If you enjoy a party scene with people treating bathrooms like they’re not shared (diapers left in showers, hair everywhere with garbage left behind in stalls), this is a great spot.. However, if you’re looking for peace and serenity in the woods, I do not recommend going here. We cut our trip short because we go camping for that reason and did not find it here. I did not see this as a very family friendly place and we will not be retuning here or to any of the white pines locations due to this experience.
Jul 06, 2025 · Marisa reifschneiderClean, well kept campground. This is our second year back. And we will be back again. It is our new tradition. Pleasant and helpful staff. Affordable camping and camp store. The outdoor showers are the best along with the clean restrooms within a quick walking distance. I can not say enough positive things about this place. An absolute hidden gem. When tent camping in the woods next to a slow running creek, it’s the perfect spot. I don’t have children but it’s super kid and family friendly, pet friendly as well.
Jul 21, 2025 · Danah marieGreat place, We stayed in the deluxe cabin opening the 2025 Camping season. Amenities were great especially the shower! Staff was friendly and kind. They went out of there way to make sure we had everything we needed. Lots of updates too. Can't wait to come here again!
Apr 26, 2025 · Lyn RobertsArrived at 2:30 & no one was there for check-in. Check-in is supposed to be start 1 pm. Owner forgot about us & had to wait 45 minutes for site because equipment was still laying gravel down. The folks working were very nice & helpful. The picnic table fell apart when they tried to move it. Said we would get a welcome packet tomorrow but it never came. Never emailed us the code to get thru gate in & out of the park so had to wait each time. A standard site was supposed to have water & septic tie-in. The septic receptacle was too small & narrow for our standard tie-in that has worked all across America. The grounds worker suggested we use a garden hose???? For the price this site was not worth it. The place was packed with seasonal folks' campers but lucky for us no one was there yet as it was too early in the year. Only stayed 2 nights Sadly won't be back to this one but it was close for fly fishing the river.
