This geographical setting provides a distinct balance of natural immersion and urban proximity.
Accessibility to the campground is generally straightforward for those traveling by car. It is easily reachable from major thoroughfares in the Triangle area, including I-40 and US-70, making it a convenient destination for residents from Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and surrounding communities. The park's entrance, which leads to the campground, is typically well-marked. However, it's crucial for prospective campers to be aware of the specific park operating hours, particularly regarding gate access, as this can significantly impact arrival and departure logistics.
The proximity to RDU airport, while offering quick access for air travelers, is also a notable aspect of the campground’s environment. Campers should be prepared for potential aircraft noise due to the flight paths in and out of the airport. For local North Carolinians, this location offers an excellent opportunity to experience state park camping without extensive travel, providing a quick and easy natural escape. However, managing expectations regarding ambient noise, especially for light sleepers, is advisable given its unique placement near a busy international airport.

This means that camping fees are usually fixed and publicly available on the North Carolina State Parks website or by contacting the park directly.
However, visitors might find "promotional" opportunities in other forms, such as:
The best way to ascertain current pricing for campsites and any potential special circumstances (e.g., group rates if applicable, or information about specific amenity access fees) is to visit the official North Carolina State Parks website for William B. For local hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and equestrians, having such diverse and expansive natural pathways right at the campground’s doorstep is an invaluable resource. This allows for days filled with exploration, exercise, and enjoying the rich biodiversity of a classic North Carolina Piedmont forest. It's a chance to see local wildlife, identify native plants, and experience the changing seasons firsthand, all within a short drive from home.
While some external factors, such as noise from the nearby airport, are noted in reviews, it's important to weigh these against the overall benefits. For many campers, the benefits of proximity to home, affordability, and the sheer natural beauty and recreational opportunities within the park outweigh these considerations. Light sleepers might need to prepare with earplugs, but the core experience of camping in a natural setting remains intact.
Furthermore, as a state park facility, the campground provides a safe and managed environment, ensuring that basic amenities like restrooms and water are maintained. This structured approach to camping can be particularly appealing to families or those new to overnight outdoor experiences. Umstead Family Campground stands as an excellent and highly suitable local destination.

They lock the gate at 6:00 pm. That doesn’t even make sense for a campground. We pulled up as a maintenance worker was unlocking the gate to get in and he told us to come back in the morning at 8:00am. This is not only inconvenient but a serious safety hazard for anyone camping in the park, better hope you don’t have an emergency.
Jan 18, 2025 · Zac VongphakdyGreat camp ground. But being by the airport is very noisy. Light sleepers need not apply. Trails are nice. Air pollution bad!
Oct 16, 2022 · Joe JordanOmg, one of the best campgrounds we've stayed in. Lots of large sites, we have a 42 ft, and it was kinda of tricky, but we did it 🌞 clean hot showers, just loved it. If you're one for trees and trails 😁
Jul 02, 2023 · Debbie EdensNot a peaceful campground. Its right next to the airport (literally borders the airport) so it’s extremely loud from planes taking off. Toilets were clean, bathrooms themselves were extremely moldy. Also got racially profiled as soon as I arrived to the campground. They had the police and park troopers follow me and everything just to check that I had reserved my campsite (which I did). The gates lock and don’t unlock until 8am, which I felt was kind of late and I did not appreciate being locked in after my uncomfortable run in with the park troopers and police. I definitely will not be returning.
Jul 20, 2022 · XYZ ABCI have never seen a campground lock the entry gate. We arrived at 8:10, they lock it at 8 (bad traffic from Annapolis) Called the ranger who basically told us it's not his problem. We had to find a hotel last minut.e. How is it even a thing to lock a gate like that? What if you were inside and had an emergency and had to leave. Guess I would have run it over if we were actually inside.
