Introduction / Overview
For generations of Maine residents, the summer months mean one thing: getting outdoors and enjoying the best of our beautiful state. When it comes to a classic, convenient, and family-friendly outdoor experience, Apache Campground in Sanford has established itself as a true local favorite. Nestled right on the shores of Estes Lake, this seasonal campground offers a perfect blend of woodland relaxation, lakeside fun, and a vibrant community atmosphere that keeps people coming back year after year. Open generally from May 1st through September 30th, Apache Campground provides a classic Maine camping experience for both long-term seasonal campers and weekend visitors alike.
The campground caters to a variety of needs, welcoming everything from large RVs to traditional tent setups. With approximately 150 sites, including a significant portion dedicated to seasonal campers, it has developed a strong sense of camaraderie and a laid-back, welcoming vibe. It is a place where local Maine families can truly settle in for the summer, enjoying the clean facilities and the abundance of on-site activities. Whether you're looking to enjoy a quiet morning fishing on Estes Lake, spend the afternoon by the pool, or simply relax in a comfortable, non-crowded site, Apache Campground offers a accessible and appealing setting for your next getaway.
Location and Accessibility
One of the primary benefits of Apache Campground, especially for Mainers, is its accessible location in Southern Maine. Situated at 165 Bernier Rd in Sanford, ME 04073, the campground provides that sought-after "away from it all" feeling without actually being remote. Sanford is a city known for its revitalization, historical roots, and proximity to some of the region's best coastal attractions, meaning you have the convenience of local services just a short drive away while enjoying the tranquility of Estes Lake.
For those traveling with a larger rig, the location is relatively easy to reach. From the junction of Highway 109 and Highway 4, visitors typically head north on Highway 4 before making a couple of turns onto New Dam Road and finally Bernier Road. This positioning means the campground is a reasonable drive—under an hour—from major population centers like Portland, and just over an hour from Lewiston. Importantly for many local campers, the popular Southern Maine beaches, including Wells and Ogunquit, are conveniently accessible for a day trip, usually within a 20-30 minute drive. This balance of being near the woods, on the water, and close to both local services and coastal attractions makes it an ideal central hub for exploring the region.

We had a seasonal site for 5 years. Love the Lake, the pool, and the sites aren't crowded together. We live here from May 1 to October 1 when they close for the season. The bathhouse are clean. They have on-site laundry.
Jun 06, 2025 · Sgt SmithersFound it very difficult to book a site. Called and no answer. Office was closed upon arrival. Went back the second day and they refused to rent a site with power for a tent. To clarify, they had sites open with electric, but would not rent them. This place seems like an absolute nightmare to camp at with the rule police.
Jun 13, 2025 · J MaloHorrible experience. The worst service I've ever had to deal with at any campground ever. So rude and disrespectful. Wow. Im appalled.

May 16, 2025 · Tammy JonesI have been going to this campground for 30+ years since I was a small child. I grew up here and I would recommend it to anyone with a family. Pool is great, Estes Lake is clean and great for boating. Christmas in July, plus Halloween with trick or treating... lots of family activities. If you're looking for a family oriented campground this is the place!
