Many local campers appreciate the minimal elevation gain involved, making it suitable for a wide range of fitness levels, from seasoned hikers to those newer to backcountry exploration. The path leading to the campsite is predominantly a flat, wide trail, transitioning to a short section of more traditional trail closer to the camp itself. This ease of access ensures that your journey to tranquility is as enjoyable as your stay. Situated in Bryson City, North Carolina, Backcountry Camp 60 offers the convenience of being within a reasonable drive for many North Carolina residents, providing an accessible escape to the stunning natural landscapes that define our beautiful state. Backcountry Camp 60, while offering a true wilderness experience, provides a robust set of features that cater to the needs of local campers looking for a comfortable yet authentic outdoor adventure. This is a designated backcountry campsite, meaning you'll be experiencing nature in its more raw form, but with the assurance of a recognized and permitted location.

  • Backcountry Permit Required: To maintain the pristine condition of the area and ensure a managed experience, a backcountry permit is mandatory for all overnight stays. This helps regulate usage and preserve the natural environment for all North Carolinians to enjoy.
  • Parking Tag Required: For those driving to the Deep Creek Trailhead, a parking tag is necessary. This ensures proper vehicle management and contributes to the upkeep of the trail system.
  • Large Capacity Site: Backcountry Camp 60 is notably spacious, boasting a capacity for up to 20 people. This makes it an excellent choice for larger groups, scout troops, or multiple families wanting to camp together while still enjoying ample personal space.
  • Multiple Camping Areas: Within the large site, there are three to four separate designated areas for setting up camp. This allows for a sense of privacy even when the site is at capacity, and provides flexibility for groups to spread out.
  • Creek Access: A significant highlight of Backcountry Camp 60 is its direct proximity to Deep Creek. All of the camping areas are situated right beside the beautiful Deep Creek, offering soothing sounds of flowing water, easy access for water activities (where permitted), and prime opportunities for fishing.
  • No Cell Service: For those looking to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in nature, the absence of cell service at Backcountry Camp 60 is a major advantage. It’s an ideal location to unplug from digital distractions and fully embrace the tranquility of the wilderness.

The allure of Backcountry Camp 60 extends beyond its convenient location and basic amenities, offering several key highlights that make it a premier choice for North Carolina locals seeking an authentic outdoor experience. These features truly set it apart as a favorite among those who have discovered its charm.

  • Unparalleled Seclusion: Despite its accessibility, Backcountry Camp 60 provides a remarkable sense of solitude. As noted by previous campers, it’s not uncommon to have the entire site to yourselves, offering a rare opportunity for complete peace and quiet amidst nature. This makes it ideal for those seeking a true escape from the hustle and bustle.
  • Beautiful Deep Creek Frontage: The constant presence of Deep Creek right at your campsite is a significant draw. The soothing sounds of the water create a naturally relaxing atmosphere, and the direct access allows for refreshing dips (check local regulations) or simply enjoying the scenic views. It’s a perfect spot for stream-side relaxation.
  • Ideal for Fishing Enthusiasts: With its direct access to Deep Creek, the campsite is a fantastic base for fishing. Anglers can enjoy the convenience of casting a line just steps from their tent, making for a truly integrated fishing and camping experience.
  • Family-Friendly Hike: The "easy hike with very little elevation gain" is a major highlight, especially for families with children or individuals who prefer a less strenuous approach to backcountry camping. This accessibility opens up the world of wilderness camping to a broader audience, making it a perfect spot for introducing new campers to the joys of the outdoors.
  • Abundant Space for Groups: The large capacity and multiple separate camping areas mean that even with a group of 20, everyone has space to move, set up camp comfortably, and enjoy a degree of privacy. This adaptability makes it suitable for diverse group needs.
  • Perfect for Unplugging: In today’s constantly connected world, the lack of cell service is a deliberate feature for many. It forces a digital detox, encouraging campers to fully engage with their surroundings, their companions, and themselves, fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Currently, Backcountry Camp 60 operates under the standard Great Smoky Mountains National Park backcountry permit and parking tag system. While there aren't specific "promotions" in the commercial sense, the value in securing your permit well in advance, especially during peak seasons, acts as a "special offer" in itself by guaranteeing your spot at this highly sought-after location. Early planning ensures you won't miss out on the opportunity to experience this secluded gem. Always check the National Park Service website for the most up-to-date information on permit availability, fees, and any seasonal changes that might affect your visit. This site is easily accessible at under three miles from the Deep Creek Trailhead. Not a whole lot of elevation gain so almost anyone could hike to it. A large backcountry site with a 20 person capacity. Three of four separate areas to camp and all of them right beside beautiful Deep Creek! We were the only people camping this night and it was perfect. Definitely one of our favorite campsites in the backcountry yet. Be sure to get your backcountry permit and parking tag.

This backcountry campsite is a hidden gem, right around three miles from the Deep Creek Trailhead. The hike is easy, with very little elevation gain, making it accessible for most people. The site is big and offers multiple separate camping areas and direct access to Deep Creek, which is great for fishing! The trail leading in is mostly a flat, wide path, with only a short section of actual trail near the end. There’s no cell service, which makes it a great place to unplug and enjoy the surroundings. You will be parking at Deep Creek so make sure you have a parking tag and your backcountry permit. Very nice easy to access campsite!

Fantastic site. Has three separate areas with their own fire pits and their own access to the river. Saw a pair of dear walk right through the site at dusk. It is an easy hike to this site. Only the very last part is a trail, the rest is a relatively flat and wide carriageway.

This was a great camping spot. Easy trail to the camp site. People like to fish in the creek, near the sites. No cell service though, witch is a good thing for me. Easy access to water.
