For us Iowans, the call of the lake and the quiet serenity of a well-maintained campground are often at the top of our list for a perfect getaway. Buck Creek Campground, nestled on the shores of the expansive Rathbun Lake near Moravia, is a destination that consistently delivers on this promise. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it provides a welcoming and affordable environment for everything from a weekend escape to a longer family vacation.
Buck Creek Campground is highly regarded for its picturesque setting and excellent value. As one happy camper shared, "This was a beautiful park! We had the most wonderful site by the lake and in the shade. The lots are very spacious. It was so peaceful and quiet. The price was very reasonable. With our Senior Pass it was $9. With this we had electric hookup. There is water and dump centrally located. There was water right beside our site. American Core of Engineers Rock!!" This review truly highlights the core strengths of the campground: stunning lakeside views, ample space, tranquility, and affordability.
While one review did mention some debris on a campsite and a lack of soap in the restroom, it’s important to remember that such issues can be isolated and are generally addressed by diligent park staff. The overall sentiment from visitors points to a well-kept facility that offers a peaceful escape. The emphasis on "peaceful and quiet" nature of the campground is a recurring theme, making it particularly appealing for those seeking a true break from the hustle and bustle.
Whether you're looking to cast a line, launch your boat, or simply relax by a campfire with loved ones, Buck Creek Campground provides the ideal backdrop. Its commitment to providing spacious, clean, and affordable sites on one of Iowa's premier lakes makes it a top choice for locals wanting to experience the best of our state's natural beauty and outdoor recreation.
Buck Creek Campground is strategically located at 13796 Crappie Cir, Moravia, IA 52571, USA. This address places it directly on the beautiful Rathbun Lake in Appanoose County, in the gently rolling hills of southeastern Iowa's Chariton River Valley. For Iowans, Rathbun Lake is a significant and beloved recreational hub, often referred to as "Iowa's Ocean" due to its large size.
The campground is situated approximately 9 miles northwest of Centerville, a regional hub that offers essential services, grocery stores, and other amenities that campers might need. From Centerville, you can typically reach the campground by heading north on Highway 5, then connecting to local roads like J-29 and J5T, with clear signage guiding the way. For those traveling from larger Iowa cities like Des Moines or Iowa City, the drive is a manageable two to three hours, making it an excellent weekend or week-long getaway destination.
Its lakeside location provides direct access to the 11,000-acre Rathbun Lake, which is the primary draw for many visitors. This means campers are just steps away from prime fishing, boating, swimming, and sailing opportunities. The natural surroundings are a key part of the appeal, with open grassy areas dotted with trees and a chance to spot abundant wildlife, including bald eagles, white-tailed deer, Canada geese, and wild turkeys.
Beyond the lake, the area offers additional attractions. The Rathbun Fish Hatchery, located near the main dam, provides educational self-guided tours during weekdays. For outdoor enthusiasts, Southern Iowa's only Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Park is also nearby, offering nearly 125 acres for off-road adventures. This combination of serene lakeside camping, convenient access to a local town, and proximity to diverse recreational activities makes Buck Creek Campground a well-placed and highly accessible choice for Iowans.
Buck Creek Campground, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, provides a range of essential services and amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience on Rathbun Lake.
These services collectively contribute to a functional and enjoyable camping experience, making it a popular choice for those seeking lakeside recreation in Iowa.
As a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) managed campground, Buck Creek Campground primarily operates on a standard fee structure, and direct "promotions" in the commercial sense are less common than at privately owned resorts. However, there is a significant and consistently available benefit for eligible individuals that acts as a fantastic offer:
The core "promotion" of Buck Creek Campground lies in its consistent provision of a high-quality, amenity-rich camping experience at a very competitive and affordable price, particularly for those who qualify for federal passes. For the most current pricing and reservation details, visiting Recreation.gov or contacting the Rathbun Lake Project Office is recommended.
For us Iowans planning a trip to Buck Creek Campground on Rathbun Lake, here's how to get in touch or find more information:

The consistent praise for its "peaceful and quiet" atmosphere and "very spacious" sites directly appeals to our desire for a relaxing camping experience where we can truly unwind. We love having room to spread out, enjoy our surroundings, and not feel cramped by neighboring campers. The fact that it’s right on Rathbun Lake, "Iowa's Ocean," is a huge plus, providing immediate access to fishing, boating, and swimming – activities deeply ingrained in our Iowa summer traditions.
The affordability, especially with the added benefit of the Senior Pass discount that makes electric sites incredibly inexpensive, makes Buck Creek an exceptional value for many of us. Knowing that we can enjoy quality amenities like clean restrooms, showers, and electric hookups at such reasonable prices, all while benefiting from the reliable management of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, adds a layer of trust and comfort.

We stayed in camp site f1 and there tree limbs and debris all over our site. I had to pick up the debris before I was able to put our rug down, and my walker did not get around to well with the sticks I did not get picked up. There was no soap in the restroom.
