The park is approximately twelve miles from Moravia and about twenty-four miles from both Albia and Centerville, offering a balance of secluded natural beauty with reasonable proximity to local towns for supplies and services.
The roads leading into Honey Creek State Park are generally well-paved, which is a relief for those towing campers or driving larger RVs. Modern Campsites: Honey Creek State Park South Campground offers modern campsites, primarily equipped with electric hookups (30-amp and 50-amp service available). It is important to note that the south campground is known for sites that may be significantly out of level, requiring campers to have leveling equipment.
Modern Restrooms and Showers: The campground features modern comfort stations with flush toilets and showers. The shower building in the south campground may close for the season in late October and reopen in mid-April, weather permitting, while vault toilets remain open year-round.
Dump Station: A trailer dump station is available for convenient waste disposal. However, it's worth noting a previous comment about the dump station's location requiring a "3-point turn with a camper and back into it," which may pose a minor maneuvering challenge for some.
Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is typically equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for outdoor dining and enjoying campfires under the Iowa sky.

As a state park campground managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Honey Creek State Park South Campground typically operates on a standardized fee structure set by the state. Therefore, "promotions" in the traditional commercial sense are less common compared to private campgrounds. However, there are often ways to make your camping experience more affordable or take advantage of benefits offered through state park systems.
Potential benefits and programs that Iowa State Parks, including Honey Creek, might offer or honor include:
America the Beautiful Passes: While primarily for federal lands, some state parks may offer reciprocal discounts for holders of certain federal passes, such as the Senior Pass or Access Pass, though this varies by state and is not guaranteed for Iowa State Parks. It's always worth checking with the park office.
Iowa DNR Programs: The Iowa DNR occasionally runs programs or initiatives that might provide opportunities for reduced fees or special access to parks. Keep an eye on the official Iowa DNR website or subscribe to their newsletters for any announcements.
Off-Season Rates: During the non-peak season (typically fall, winter, and early spring), some services like water hookups or shower buildings may be closed, and while rates might not be explicitly "discounted," the overall cost for a more primitive setup could be lower.
First-Come, First-Served Sites: While many sites are reservable, a portion of campsites at Iowa State Parks like Honey Creek may be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This offers flexibility and spontaneous camping opportunities, though not necessarily a discount.

Customer Reviews
Hassled by the fish cops(DNR) for no apparent reason, the camp sites on the south are ridiculously out of level- some of them 4 feet in the length of a camper, the dump station is in a ridiculous location, (3 point turn with a camper and back into it) no hot water in the showers. That sums it up.
Clean sites, modern restroom houses with showers, the week we visited, very quiet / not busy.
When are you going to open the south shower house? No one wants to use the other ones that use prison showers you have to push the button every 5 seconds on the north showers.
Some nice campsites. I was here in late Oct. and the bath/shower house was already closed for the season. Fortunately, the one at the north campground was still open.
Good childhood memories!
