Stoney Creek Oasis About

For North Carolina locals seeking a refreshingly different kind of outdoor escape, one that prioritizes tranquility, natural beauty, and a relaxed atmosphere over traditional campground formalities, Stoney Creek Oasis in Candler offers a truly unique experience. This isn't your typical bustling RV park or a regimented national forest campground; instead, it provides a more intimate and organic connection with nature. As one reviewer aptly put it, "Not your traditional campground! But overall great." This candid assessment highlights its appeal to those who prefer quiet, community, and the soothing sounds of a babbling creek as their primary amenities.

Located just a short drive from the vibrant city of Asheville, Stoney Creek Oasis is a haven for those who appreciate a laid-back approach to camping, where dogs can roam freely (if comfortable), and friendly, long-term campers contribute to a welcoming vibe. It’s a place where you can truly unwind, play in a refreshing creek, and enjoy the beautiful Western North Carolina landscape. For North Carolinians who value peace, privacy, and a more personal camping experience, Stoney Creek Oasis promises an authentic and memorable retreat away from the crowds, inviting you to discover its unique charm right in our own backyard.

Location and Accessibility

Stoney Creek Oasis is strategically located at 11 Davis Chapel Rd, Candler, NC 28715, USA, offering a prime spot for North Carolina locals seeking both natural serenity and convenient access to popular regional destinations. Candler is a community nestled in the picturesque landscape of Western North Carolina, providing a quieter alternative to the bustling city life while remaining incredibly close to it.

Accessibility to Stoney Creek Oasis is excellent. It is just a short, scenic drive from Asheville, typically around 15-25 minutes, depending on traffic. Candler is easily reachable via major roads and highways connecting to Asheville, including NC-151 and US-19/23. This proximity allows campers to enjoy the tranquil, natural setting of the campground, and then quickly venture into Asheville to explore its renowned breweries, diverse culinary scene, vibrant arts and culture, and extensive shopping opportunities. Furthermore, a significant highlight of its location is its great proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a national treasure famous for its scenic drives, hiking trails, and breathtaking overlooks. This makes Stoney Creek Oasis an ideal base for a hiking trip or simply enjoying the iconic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. While one review notes that "the road next to it can have loud cars at times," this is a minor trade-off for such convenient access to both wilderness and urban amenities, making it a highly practical and desirable choice for any North Carolinian seeking a balanced outdoor adventure.

Services Offered

Stoney Creek Oasis, while not a "traditional campground" in the sense of large-scale resorts, offers essential services designed to enhance a comfortable and rustic camping experience, as highlighted by customer reviews. The emphasis here is on basic, yet crucial, amenities that allow for a pleasant stay in a natural setting:

  • Flushing Toilets: A significant upgrade from primitive camping, the availability of flushing toilets provides a level of comfort and hygiene.
  • Showers: Showers are available, though one review notes the "pump system (and hot water device) in the bathroom takes some time to figure out" and that the "bathroom appears to be a work in progress." This indicates that while the facility exists, it might be more rustic than a standard resort bathroom.
  • Laundry Available: The presence of laundry facilities is a major convenience, especially for longer stays or for refreshing clothes after outdoor activities.
  • Campsites with Amenities: Tent spaces are available, often right on the creek bank. While not explicitly detailed for all sites, it's common for such campgrounds to offer basic features like space for a tent, and potentially a fire pit.
  • Yurt Accommodations: For those seeking a unique glamping experience, yurts are available. These are described as "huge" and equipped with "vents that can be opened with a screen cover" for air circulation. It's noted that yurts do not have electricity, heat, or cooling beyond natural ventilation, reinforcing the rustic appeal.
  • Drinking Water Access (Implied): While not explicitly stated, access to potable water is a fundamental expectation at any operational campground.

The "work in progress" nature of some facilities suggests a continuous effort to improve the guest experience, aligning with the hands-on, community-driven feel of the place.

Features / Highlights

Stoney Creek Oasis offers a distinct set of features and highlights that set it apart from more conventional campgrounds, appealing directly to those seeking a unique and tranquil outdoor experience in North Carolina. These elements are strongly emphasized in customer reviews:

  • Beautiful Creek Access: A paramount highlight is the "beautiful creek to explore" that runs through the property, with "tent spaces... right on the creek bank." The creek is described as "clear with good swimming and wading areas," and refreshing for both kids and adults, providing a constant soothing soundtrack and a focal point for recreation.
  • Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Repeatedly praised for its "quiet" nature, this campground offers a serene escape. Visitors appreciate having "the place almost to ourselves" along with a few long-term residents, fostering a calm environment.
  • Dog-Friendly (Off-Leash Permitted): A significant and unique feature is the allowance for "dogs off leashes." This is a massive draw for dog owners who want their pets to enjoy freedom in a safe, controlled environment, though it's advised for those uncomfortable with free-roaming pets to choose elsewhere.
  • Unique, Non-Traditional Camping Experience: Reviews highlight that it's "Not your traditional campground," emphasizing its appeal to those looking for something different from large, crowded resorts or national parks. It offers a more "backyard" camping feel, as one child noted.
  • Friendly and Welcoming Community: Interaction with "super nice and welcoming" long-term campers and "van life folks" contributes to a positive, community-oriented atmosphere, sometimes even providing unofficial guidance and help.
  • Yurt Accommodations: The availability of "huge" yurts offers a distinctive glamping option, providing a sheltered, unique space to stay while still being immersed in nature, even if rustic in terms of utilities.
  • Proximity to Asheville and Blue Ridge Parkway: Its "great location" near Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway makes it an ideal base for exploring major attractions and extensive hiking opportunities in Western North Carolina.
  • Shaded Campsites: Specific mention of "Spots 3,4,16 and 17 have shade" and "4 was the best creek side spot with almost 100% shade all day!" is a valuable highlight for campers, ensuring comfort during warmer days.

Promotions or Special Offers

For a unique, non-traditional campground like Stoney Creek Oasis, specific, widely advertised "promotions" in the conventional sense may be less frequent than at larger, more commercial establishments. Their appeal often lies in their unique features and the experience they offer. However, North Carolina locals considering a stay should always inquire directly about any potential booking advantages or current terms. Based on the nature of such a venue, possible offerings might include:

  • Seasonal Rates: Pricing might vary depending on the time of year, with potentially lower rates during off-peak seasons (e.g., late fall, winter, early spring).
  • Extended Stay Discounts: For those looking to enjoy the tranquility for longer periods, it's common for campgrounds to offer reduced rates for weekly or monthly bookings. Given the presence of "long term campers/van life folks," this is a strong possibility.
  • Direct Booking Advantages: Sometimes, booking directly with the campground (if a functional phone line or direct online system is established) might offer the most favorable terms or flexibility compared to third-party platforms.

A reviewer mentioned difficulty in getting a call returned for questions, which might suggest that email or an online booking portal (if available) could be a more reliable method of inquiry. It’s always best to try the provided phone number first, and if unresponsive, explore alternative contact methods. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on availability, rates, and any specific offers, direct communication is paramount.

Contact Information

For North Carolina locals interested in experiencing the unique charm of Stoney Creek Oasis, direct contact is essential for inquiries, checking availability, and making reservations. Given the non-traditional nature of the campground, a direct line of communication helps clarify expectations and confirm details.

Address: 11 Davis Chapel Rd, Candler, NC 28715, USA

Phone: (828) 435-1880

Mobile Phone: +1 828-435-1880

One customer review noted that while the given number "worked," their "call was never returned," indicating a potential challenge with phone communication. In such cases, if available, searching for an alternative contact method like an email address or an online booking portal (e.g., via a platform like Hipcamp where unique campgrounds often list their availability) might be more effective. If you do call, be prepared to leave a detailed message with your inquiry, preferred dates, and contact information. When you successfully connect, be sure to ask about site types (tent, yurt), shade availability, pet policies, and any specific questions regarding the rustic bathroom facilities to ensure your stay meets your expectations.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For North Carolina locals, Stoney Creek Oasis offers a distinct and highly suitable option for those seeking a camping experience that deviates from the conventional. Its primary appeal lies in its unique blend of peaceful seclusion and accessibility, making it an ideal local getaway. Situated in Candler, just a short, convenient drive from Asheville, it provides an immediate escape into nature without the need for extensive travel. This means spontaneous weekend trips or a serene mid-week retreat are entirely feasible, allowing North Carolinians to fully embrace the outdoors on their own terms.

What truly makes Stoney Creek Oasis suitable for locals is its specific atmosphere. It caters to those who value "quiet, nice people, and a beautiful creek to explore," as highlighted by reviews. If you're a local who finds large, crowded campgrounds overwhelming and prefers a more intimate, laid-back setting, this is your ideal spot. The highlight of dogs being allowed off-leash is a significant draw for responsible pet owners, allowing furry family members to enjoy the freedom of nature. The clear, refreshing creek itself offers endless hours of natural play and relaxation, a perfect antidote to daily stresses. While some facilities are noted as "work in progress," this often appeals to locals who appreciate a more rustic, authentic camping feel and a place that feels less commercialized, almost like "camping in someone’s back yard." It offers a genuine connection to the natural beauty of Western North Carolina, providing a unique and memorable escape that feels both personal and deeply refreshing, right in our state's backyard.

Not your traditional campground! But overall great. Dogs are allowed off leashes so if you’re unsure or not comfortable with free roaming pets, go elsewhere. If you’re looking for traditional camping, go to your closest national forest or park. If you want quiet, nice people, and a beautiful creek to explore, stay here! We essentially had the place to ourselves along with a few of their long term campers/van life folks, and they were all super nice and welcoming. Flushing toilets, shower and laundry available. Most of the spots are creekside and it was beautiful and relaxing. Spots 3,4,16 and 17 have shade. The others are sunny 95% of the day. 4 was the best creek side spot with almost 100% shade all day! The creek was cold but not freezing, refreshing and our kids and us had a blast playing in it. Cons: the road next to it can have loud cars at times; unfortunately the number we were given to call for any questions worked but our call was never returned so you’re essentially on your own for any questions. Luckily we had the nicest long term camper there to help us out with questions, he was also working on the farm. My son (9), said “this is cool camping in someone’s back yard..” again, not a big traditional campground but we enjoyed the creek and having the place almost to ourselves to play and run around.

Solid campsite with yurts and tent spaces. The tent spaces are right on the creek bank. The creek is clear with good swimming and wading areas. We stayed in a Yurt, but could still hear the creek at night. The yurt is huge. It is equipped with vents that can be opened with a screen cover. That will be important in the summer as the yurts get hot inside. If you camp during the spring or fall, bring sleeping bags or heavy blankets as it gets very cold. The yurts have no electricity, heat or cooling other than by mother nature. My only complaint is that the sink in the bathroom is not hooked up. Also, the pump system (and hot water device) in the bathroom takes some time to figure out. The bathroom appears to be a work in progress. Location is great- near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Asheville. It's a great location for a hiking trip.
