For locals looking to explore the hidden gems of North Carolina's national forests, Cable Cove offers a prime opportunity to do so in a truly beautiful setting.
Cable Cove Campground is situated in the breathtaking region of Fontana Dam, NC 28733, USA. Specifically, it is part of the Cheoah Ranger District within the expansive Nantahala National Forest. This location places it deep within the scenic Western North Carolina mountains, an area renowned for its dense forests, pristine lakes, and abundant recreational opportunities. Being "next to an amazing lake," it offers direct access to the vast and beautiful Fontana Lake, a significant body of water in the region.
The accessibility of Cable Cove Campground is a key advantage for North Carolina residents looking for a nature escape. While nestled in a natural forest setting, it is generally accessible by road, allowing for easier access for both tent campers and those with RVs or motorhomes. The ability to accommodate larger vehicles, as noted by a reviewer who fit a "34ft motorhome with towing trailer in site 9," indicates that the roads leading to and within the campground are designed to handle various vehicle sizes. Its proximity to Fontana Dam also offers convenient access to other regional attractions and major highways, allowing for exploration of the wider Nantahala National Forest and surrounding areas. For locals, this means a manageable drive into a truly immersive natural environment, providing a perfect balance of seclusion and convenience for an unforgettable camping trip in Western North Carolina.
As a campground within a national forest, Cable Cove Campground provides essential services geared towards facilitating a comfortable outdoor experience while maintaining the natural integrity of the environment. While it offers more amenities than primitive backcountry sites, it retains a rustic charm.
Cable Cove Campground, nestled within the Nantahala National Forest, boasts several compelling features and highlights that make it a standout destination for campers in North Carolina.
As a campground managed by the U.S. Forest Service within a National Forest, Cable Cove Campground typically does not offer commercial "promotions or special offers" in the way a private business might (e.g., discount codes, loyalty programs). Its pricing is usually standardized and set by the federal agency, contributing to the upkeep and management of the national forest system.
However, the "promotion" for Cable Cove Campground lies in its inherent value: providing an affordable and authentic outdoor experience within one of North Carolina's most beautiful natural areas. While a reviewer noted "Fontana Dam Camping was ridiculously expensive," it's important to clarify that this comment likely refers to private campgrounds in the broader Fontana Dam area, not necessarily Cable Cove Campground itself, which, as a national forest site, usually offers more budget-friendly rates. The "special offer" here is the unparalleled access to lakeside tranquility, stunning mountain views, and direct nature immersion at a generally lower cost than private resorts. Prospective campers should visit the official Nantahala National Forest website or Recreation.gov for the most accurate and up-to-date information on site fees, availability, and reservation procedures.
For information regarding Cable Cove Campground, including reservations, current conditions, and regulations, you should contact the managing authority for the Cheoah Ranger District of the Nantahala National Forest.

You can also typically find detailed information and make reservations through the Recreation.gov website, which is the federal government's booking portal for many public lands campgrounds.
Cable Cove Campground is an ideal destination for locals in North Carolina seeking an authentic and serene outdoor escape. Its prime location within the Nantahala National Forest, right next to the magnificent Fontana Lake, offers an unmatched blend of mountain and lakeside recreation. For residents who own RVs or motorhomes, the ability to accommodate larger vehicles in designated sites is a significant advantage, providing flexibility that many other national forest campgrounds might lack. Even tent campers will appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and direct access to nature, including charming creeks.
The "magical" quality attributed to the "Cherokee forest" surrounding the campground speaks to the immersive natural beauty that awaits. It's a place where you can truly disconnect, whether you're fishing on the lake, hiking nearby trails, or simply enjoying the quiet of the woods. While it maintains a rustic national forest feel, it offers enough accessibility and basic amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. Jun 10, 2025 · William Beverley-BlancoBeautiful campground next to an amazing lake. We were able to fit our 34ft* motorhome with towing trailer in site 9. A couple others could also fit but we liked his one. There was a tiny trail that led to the creek from our site which was so nice. Cherokee forest was overall very magical! --- Only thing that made it a little off was a strange camp host. He didn't do anything wrong per say besides have his dog off leash, which is against rules, and the dog took off several times without him so I didn't feel safe to have my kid walking near them. He also was a little standoffish so just was a little uncomfortable. I'm sure they change hosts often but just something to note. ***Edited my post to fix, I initially put 43 ft, then 23 ft on accident but it's actually 34 ft, lol.
Oct 21, 2021 · Violet KonczGreat location near lake. Lots of shaded sites and good spacing between. Fortunately not crowded and no generator noise from rv campers. Most were tent camping here.
Oct 08, 2020 · Mark FrenchLove this campground have stayed here for many years met several tv stars there that come every year
Mar 26, 2025 · seekernflaGreat even for RVs! Large flat parking spots. No hookups but really nice for the area. Make sure not to drive RVs on tail of the dragon west of here.
