This article will provide a factual and comprehensive overview of Camp Clearwater, based on available public information and recent customer experiences. We'll explore its prime location on White Lake, the services and facilities it aims to provide, and key considerations for North Carolina residents planning a visit to this well-known destination.
Camp Clearwater is a large, established campground located directly on the shores of White Lake in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. Known as one of the largest privately-owned campgrounds in the region, it has been a popular destination for families and campers for many years, particularly during the warmer months when White Lake is a hub of activity. The campground's primary appeal lies in its direct access to White Lake, a natural lake renowned for its clear, shallow, and warm waters, which are ideal for swimming, boating, and other water-based recreation.
The atmosphere at Camp Clearwater is typically described as lively and community-oriented, especially during peak seasons. It accommodates a large number of campers, often creating a bustling environment where many return year after year, forming a sense of tradition. While it aims to provide a comprehensive camping experience with various amenities, recent feedback suggests that prospective visitors should be aware of evolving conditions, particularly concerning certain facilities and operational aspects. The overall intent of Camp Clearwater is to provide a fun and accessible lakefront camping experience for individuals and families in North Carolina.
Camp Clearwater boasts a prime location directly on the shores of White Lake in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. The address is:
2038 White Lake Dr, Elizabethtown, NC 28337, USA
This strategic position provides campers with unparalleled direct access to White Lake, making it incredibly convenient for swimming, launching boats, and enjoying all water-based activities that the lake offers. White Lake Drive is the main road that circles the lake, so the campground is easily identifiable and accessible for those visiting the area.
Elizabethtown, while a smaller North Carolina town, is well-connected via state highways, making Camp Clearwater a reachable destination for residents from across North Carolina, including those from the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) and coastal regions. The proximity to local shops and businesses in the White Lake area, as noted by a reviewer, adds to the convenience, meaning campers can easily find necessities or explore the surrounding community. For those towing RVs or trailers, the direct access from White Lake Drive and the size of the campground typically accommodate various vehicle types, though specific site navigability within the park may vary.
- Campsite Rentals: The primary service is providing campsites for RVs, travel trailers, and potentially tents (though focused on RVs given the size and nature). These sites offer space for campers to set up their temporary homes.
- Direct Lake Access: A major service and draw is the direct, convenient access to the waters of White Lake for swimming, boating, and other water recreation.
- Shower Facilities: The campground provides shower facilities for campers, an essential amenity for any prolonged stay. However, recent feedback indicates inconsistency in water temperature (some hot, some cold).
- Community Environment: While not a physical service, the campground aims to foster a lively and social community atmosphere for its campers.
- On-site Transactions (Cash Preference): As noted by a recent review, there might be a preference for cash-only transactions for certain services or purchases within the campground. Prospective visitors should be prepared for this.
- Direct White Lake Frontage: The most significant highlight is its direct and extensive frontage on White Lake, a unique natural lake in North Carolina known for its exceptionally clear, shallow, and warm waters, ideal for families and swimming.
- Large, Established Campground: Camp Clearwater is a very large and well-known campground, offering a wide array of sites and typically a bustling, active environment during peak season.
- Vibrant and Welcoming Atmosphere (Historically): Past experiences indicated a positive and welcoming atmosphere, contributing to a strong sense of community and repeat visitors. While recent experiences suggest a shift, the potential for positive social interaction remains.
- Golf Cart Culture: Golf carts are a common mode of transportation within the campground, contributing to its lively and recreational feel.
- Proximity to White Lake Area Shops: The campground's location means campers are close to other businesses and shops around White Lake, offering convenience for supplies and other activities.
It is important for prospective campers to be aware of certain aspects that have been highlighted in recent customer reviews:
- Water Quality Concerns: Recent reports mention the lake water appearing green with an unpleasant odor, and serious health concerns after swimming, which is a significant departure from White Lake's traditional reputation for clarity.
- Pedestrian Safety Concerns: Instances of near-accidents with golf carts suggest a need for improved pedestrian safety measures.
- Inconsistent Shower Facilities: Hot/cold water inconsistencies in showers were noted.
- Cash-Only Preference: A preference for cash transactions for some services was observed, which may be inconvenient for some visitors.
- Shift in Environment: A recent visitor noted a shift from a consistently friendly environment to one that felt "less inviting."
Specific publicly advertised "promotions or special offers" for Camp Clearwater are not detailed in the provided information. As a popular and often fully booked campground, especially during peak seasons at White Lake, their operational model may focus more on consistent daily/weekly rates due to high demand rather than running frequent discounts.
However, it is always advisable for North Carolina residents planning a trip to contact Camp Clearwater directly to inquire about:
- Current campsite rates (daily, weekly, or seasonal).
- Availability, especially for specific dates or types of sites (e.g., lakefront vs. interior).
- Any package deals that might be available during off-peak times or for extended stays.
- Policies regarding golf cart rentals or personal golf cart usage, as this is a prominent feature of the campground culture.
- Payment methods accepted, especially if electronic options are now more consistently available.
Given the recent feedback regarding payment preferences, confirming accepted methods before arrival would be particularly beneficial. While specific promotional offers may not be a highlight, the value proposition often comes from the unique White Lake location and the established campground community atmosphere itself.

For North Carolina residents, Camp Clearwater offers a unique and potentially suitable camping experience, particularly for those drawn to the distinctive "beach lake" environment of White Lake. Its suitability is rooted in its established presence, prime location, and the type of vacation it aims to provide, while acknowledging recent feedback that highlights areas for improvement.
Firstly, the paramount draw is its direct frontage on White Lake. For North Carolinians, White Lake's unusually clear, shallow, and warm waters present an ideal environment for families with children, offering safe swimming, boating, and a genuine beach-like feel without the ocean's waves and currents. Camp Clearwater capitalizes on this, providing immediate access to this beloved natural feature. For those who prioritize endless water activities and a lakeside setting, this is a significant advantage.
Secondly, Camp Clearwater has a long history as a family-friendly destination. Despite recent comments, the potential for a vibrant community atmosphere, where families can return year after year and forge lasting memories, remains a core aspect of its appeal. The sheer size of the campground means there's a constant buzz of activity, and for many, this lively environment is precisely what they seek in a summer vacation spot. The prevalence of golf carts also adds a fun, unique element to navigating the park.
While recent feedback points to areas needing attention—such as water quality concerns, pedestrian safety, and facility maintenance—these are important considerations for prospective visitors. However, for those North Carolina residents who are deeply fond of White Lake and are seeking a large, active campground with direct lake access for their RV or travel trailer, Camp Clearwater still holds a significant place. It represents a traditional summer experience for many, offering the unique joy of White Lake right at their doorstep. For future visits, staying informed and communicating directly with the management about current conditions will be key to a positive experience at this enduring North Carolina landmark.
Customer Reviews
Since 2021, I have been a regular visitor to this location and always appreciated the positive and welcoming atmosphere. However, during my most recent visit in 2025, I noticed a shift that left me somewhat disappointed. The friendly environment that once characterized my experiences appeared diminished, replaced by interactions that felt less inviting. During this visit, I encountered a couple of safety concerns, including incidents where me and my family was almost struck while walking. Some rude people on golf carts as well. Enhancing pedestrian safety measures, such as clearer walkways or designated walking areas, could greatly improve the overall experience. Additionally, I observed a preference for cash-only transactions, which raised questions about standard business practices. Implementing transparent payment options, including electronic methods, might foster greater trust among visitors. the water quality was disappointing. It was no longer clear, appearing green with an unpleasant odor. This was not only off-putting but also worrisome. I overheard a conversation where a mother mentioned that her child had become seriously ill after being in the water, even requiring hospitalization—definitely alarming to hear. Additionally, the shower facilities were inconsistent. Some showers only provided hot water, while others offered only cold, making it difficult to find a comfortable balance. This lack of basic facility maintenance was frustrating. On a positive note, I did meet several kind individuals whose warmth stood out and was genuinely appreciated. Their hospitality serves as a strong foundation for this community. With attention to these areas—enhancing safety, promoting transparent practices, and nurturing the friendly atmosphere—I believe the location can continue to thrive. I hope to see these improvements in the future, which would encourage me to return and support this community once more, for now though I don’t think I can contribute financially to this establishment.
We did not stay here but stopped by on the way to the coast. The entire White Lake area is very nice and clean with lots of shops. At the time of our visit, it was off-season, so a lot of businesses were closed, but I would definitely consider a return trip to the area.
This place has become too commercialized it used to feel like a family spot. Great for older groups not kids.
We have no experience with any room/cabins that may be available, but to my knowledge, they offer only permanent and overnight/transient sites along with trailer/ RV storage. Customer service experience is awesome with Lindsey and Mary Beth. Campground is mainly permanent sites on the outer edge on and off the White Lake side, with nice Premium and Non Premium sites. We were on a Premium site and really enjoyed our stay. Golf Carts are really enjoyed at this Campground, especially by the children and by adults. We actually rented a golf cart due to the size of the Campground, which helps with becoming familiar with this setup. Good place for bike riding, also. We look forward to visiting again.
I love this place!! It's not just a campground to me, it's a community of wonderful people!!!! There are a handful of people who I have met and befriended. I love that there is everything either inside the grounds or very close by, and so many people are very friendly and helpful.
