Introduction / Overview
When New Jersey residents think of a true escape, they often picture the sprawling, unspoiled woodlands of the northern part of the state. Camp Wyanokie, nestled in the scenic hills of West Milford, NJ, is the embodiment of that vision. Spanning 150 pristine acres, this is not a luxury RV resort but an authentic, rustic camping experience designed for families, scouts, and nature enthusiasts seeking a genuine retreat from the digital world.
Camp Wyanokie’s rich history dates back to 1919 and has been preserved as a community commitment to open space. It offers a genuine back-to-nature opportunity, perfectly suited for those who appreciate the simplicity and quiet of the outdoors. The camp surrounds a sparkling five-acre lake and borders the expansive Norvin Green State Forest, serving as a gateway to miles of beautiful hiking trails.
Crucially, prospective campers must understand that Camp Wyanokie is proudly "rustic." This means deliberately avoiding modern conveniences. Visitors will not find sites with electricity, running water, showers, modern restrooms, or Wi-Fi. Instead, the park provides tent camping areas, traditional three-sided wooden lean-to shelters, outhouses (latrines), and hand-pumped drinking water. This focus ensures the preservation of a tranquil, natural environment, making the experience all the more rewarding for those seeking a true wilderness feel without traveling far from home.
The community management strives to maintain a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere. As noted by many local visitors, the environment is generally quiet, family-friendly, and perfect for relaxing, fishing, and hiking. The on-site management is reported to be attentive and helpful, even selling well-regarded bundles of wood to keep those essential campfires burning throughout the weekend. It is an ideal spot for a day trip picnic or a multi-night camping adventure, provided guests are prepared for a true, unplugged outdoor experience.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Camp Wyanokie is exceptionally suitable for New Jersey locals because it delivers an authentic, deep-woods wilderness experience without the travel burden of leaving the state or driving to distant regions. For North Jersey residents, it represents a precious, accessible escape—a place where you can trade the noise of the suburbs for the peaceful sounds of nature in less than an hour’s drive. In a state as densely populated as New Jersey, having 150 acres of preserved forest, a private lake for fishing, and direct access to major hiking trails available to the public is an invaluable resource. It supports family bonding, encourages outdoor physical activity, and offers a much-needed mental break through its intentional lack of modern amenities. Whether you are planning a simple day picnic, a weekend of catch-and-release fishing, or an extended hiking trip through Norvin Green State Forest, Camp Wyanokie provides the perfect backdrop. It’s a local treasure that encourages New Jerseyans to embrace the natural beauty of their home state, providing a high-quality, memorable, and refreshingly rustic experience right in their own backyard.

Absolutely love this place. I came a few weekends ago and love it so we decided to do a family weekend this weekend and we had a blast. For the most part it’s quiet there’s some that do like to be loud but they respond and handle the situation professionally. I will definitely be coming back every weekend we get the chance. Everything was well maintained except 1 lean to at map #6 which was used as everyone’s bathroom assuming because it smelled bad and a really strong smell of urine. Those minor things mean nothing when you see how gorgeous it is. The hiking trails are easy scenic trails that you must hike if you come stay. Mike has been amazing and very helpful along with fast when it comes to pleasing the campers, making sure everyone is respected and making sure we’re all happy while we stay. They also sell bundles of wood and I will not buy from anyone else. I bought 5 bundles and it lasted from Friday to Sunday morning. You can’t beat it between hiking, fishing and just relaxing enjoying the amazing land and sounds this camp has it all in one place. Thank you so much for having us we’ve had a blast and look forward to coming back as much as we possibly can.

Aug 15, 2025 · Olga KontaurovCampsite 2 was terrible and shouldn’t be an option to rent out. The only spot to put your tent is 2 feet away from community porta John. People literally drove through our campsite with their cars in the middle of the night. Site is not managed, maintained or policed well. Loud music could be heard through out the woods up to 3 am. Garbage and safety hazards everywhere. Other sites did look ok. Not campsite 2 tho! Stay away from campsite 2
Aug 20, 2023 · John EckertWe stayed at lakeside lean-to (#6) and had a great time. There was a fire pit and a charcoal grill with a nice view of the lake and good shelter under the lean-to when it rained. No black-bear sightings but lots of wildlife about if you look and listen. I would’ve left 5 stars but ONLY complaint was in regards to the latrine. I completely understand that this is a rustic campground and loved the experience overall, but the latrine was not kept clean at all. If you’re going to stay here please clean up after yourself :)
Sep 11, 2022 · Angelina PichardoThe location itself is lovely, but unfortunately the sites require a lot of cleanup to be usable. When we arrived to set up camp, we noticed the ground was covered in shattered glass. The glass carpeted the site itself, and the surrounding area, going right down to the trail. We checked a couple of other available sites and saw more shattered glass covering the ground, discarded opened tin cans and other garbage. One even had a toxic, half burned railroad tie. As we were unable to stay due to safety concerns, I reached out to the site contact to advise accordingly. Once the camp contact was made aware of the situation, they were quick to process a refund and confirmed they will be visiting to clean up the site.
