Introduction / Overview
For those in Northern New Jersey seeking a traditional, deep-woods camping experience, Sun-Air Lakeside Camp in Oak Ridge presents itself as a rustic, family-owned establishment nestled on 105 wooded acres. Established in a time when camping was more about simplicity and a close connection to nature, this site has a long history, with some local residents having camped there seasonally for decades, returning generation after generation to their favorite spots. It is a place that offers a genuine escape from the fast pace of suburban life, providing a wooded setting around a picturesque five-acre private lake.
The campground operates primarily on a seasonal basis, allowing dedicated campers to keep their RVs or trailers on-site for extended periods, typically from May through October. This focus on seasonal guests fosters a tight-knit community atmosphere, making it feel less like a temporary stop and more like a summer home for many New Jersey families. For casual weekend visitors, it offers sites for both RVs and tent camping, focusing on the core experience of campfires, fishing, and enjoying the fresh air of the Oak Ridge area.
However, local users should note that Sun-Air Lakeside Camp embraces a decidedly rugged, 'back-to-basics' aesthetic. While the natural setting is beautiful, with great fishing potential and peaceful surroundings, public reviews suggest the infrastructure and maintenance of certain facilities may reflect the camp’s age and rustic charm. Potential visitors seeking modern resort-style amenities, perfectly paved roads, or luxury comfort stations should be prepared for a more authentic, hands-on camping experience. A realistic expectation is key to enjoying the natural beauty and community spirit the camp has to offer.
Location and Accessibility
Sun-Air Lakeside Camp is located at 115 Cozy Lake Rd in the scenic community of Oak Ridge, New Jersey, deep within Jefferson Township. Its location places it squarely in the heart of Northern New Jersey's lake and mountain region, providing an easily accessible nature retreat for residents of Morris, Sussex, and Passaic counties, as well as those traveling from the wider NYC metropolitan area.
The camp's proximity to major North Jersey roadways, while still being tucked away off a local road, offers a perfect balance. It is remote enough to provide the feeling of a genuine wilderness escape, yet close enough that a weekend trip doesn't require excessive driving time. The name 'Oak Ridge' itself suggests a heavily wooded area, which is precisely what visitors will find—a dense, natural buffer from the stresses of urbanity.
Accessibility by car is straightforward, though local knowledge and public reviews indicate that the internal campground roads may be unpaved and potentially rugged, often described as having ruts. Due to the unmaintained condition of internal roads, having a vehicle with adequate clearance, such as a truck or SUV, may be beneficial for navigating the campsite to your reserved spot, particularly after heavy rain. This is an important detail for New Jersey residents planning to bring a low-clearance RV or trailer.
Services Offered
Sun-Air Lakeside Camp focuses its service offerings on the essentials of traditional camping and seasonal residency. The camp provides the fundamental infrastructure necessary for an enjoyable outdoor stay, centered around the 105-acre property.

Conclusion: Why This Place Is Suitable for Locals
Sun-Air Lakeside Camp is uniquely suited for Northern New Jersey residents who prioritize a genuine, rustic camping experience over modern luxury. Its suitability for locals is rooted in its accessible location in the beautiful Oak Ridge area and its strong focus on long-term, seasonal camping. For many families in the region, the camp functions as an affordable, local 'second home' during the warmer months, allowing them to escape to their private wooded retreat without the stress of an annual pilgrimage to a distant vacation spot.
This camp is ideal for the camper who is self-sufficient, values a peaceful, forested environment, and enjoys the community of seasonal campers. The private lake access for swimming and fishing is a significant draw, providing immediate recreational value. While it is essential for visitors to manage their expectations regarding the condition of the physical infrastructure—as acknowledged in customer feedback regarding the rustic nature of facilities and roads—those who embrace the 'roughing it' aspect and cherish a deeply authentic, non-commercialized New Jersey camping atmosphere will find Sun-Air Lakeside Camp to be a treasured, convenient, and historically rich option right in their backyard. It's a true classic for those who understand and appreciate the charm of a less polished, more organic outdoor experience.

I was a seasonal camper, which means I had my trailer there and I would have access from may-oct and which was great u could go there year round you would have to pay 10. Per person I spent many years on nye there. But as life went on we left and raised my family, we went back in 2012 oh I’m sorry I was there originally from 1974-1995. So we went back to our old spot, and this place went to hell, they have a lot of well not to be disrespectful you know the folks that live with camo net over there whole campsite so there living there now, the bathrooms had not been cleaned or updated since the 70.s literally the showers also you would have to stand in the shower on certain flooring because if you stepped on the wrong one you will fall through the floors, the lake was no in years , j lastly the park area looked abandoned and you better have at the least a truck because the ruts on what they call roads
Apr 22, 2025 · jeff heffAll I can say is the previous reviews were accurate, the park has potential that requires work! Super nasty bathrooms no hot water for coin operated showers. And yes, the barking pit bull is also accurate and he got loose!!
Jul 31, 2023 · donna searcyIt’s such a disaster to come here, dumping the black and grey tanks. We wait for more than two hours just emptied 1/3 because of sun down. Their tank was full already. They still charge you $25!
Jul 12, 2023 · Donna GerlearIt’s such a disaster to come here. Very bad service. The sewer drain was blocked , going down very slowly. It took us about two hours to empty the tank. Before sundown, we had to leave without finishing dumping. We recommended by a local service. Never come here again!!!
May 10, 2024 · Z W.A nice, small, private, family owned and operated campground. The familymanagement seems nice enough and were quick to answer questions about the campground via email. Although, I would recommend they further develop/update their website to include more information about the campsite like the amenities, facilities, camp map, area stores, medical facilities, etc. so that prospective campers can do their research ahead of time. Overall, the sites are nicely wooded and secluded for the most part, you can see your neighbors, but they're not right on top of you. We stayed in the number 6 site, right along the lake with a nice canopy and layout to accommodate 15 people with 6 tents and parking for 6-8 vehicles. The small lake has a small beach roped off for swimming and has plenty of fish and some growth along the edges, but that's a minor hassle considering no fishing license is required. Some issues we felt need to be addressed are that fishing should be restricted from the swimming area, the access road requires some maintenance, the water and electric in the tent sites could be better designed for access/safety. The biggest fail are the bathroom/shower facilities which seem like they're only cleaned, at most, once/month and look like something straight out of a horror movie. Another rather large issue is that the site we stayed in had such extremely poor drainage that we had 3-6 inches of standing water during a storm as the site appeared to be the water collection area for all the runoff in the campground. As much as we would like to support the small businesses and mom n pop establishments, we will not be returning to this campsite. One other point is not so much for the campground as much as the guests who stay there and just an overall observation about the human condition: BE CONSIDERATE - people will be using the site after you so CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES (think minimal impact) and don't compromise the safety of others (e.g. breaking GLASS and not picking it up).
