Dalrymple Park and Campground About

For Wisconsin adventurers seeking a convenient and scenic basecamp for exploring the majestic Apostle Islands region and the shores of Lake Superior, Dalrymple Park and Campground offers a practical solution. Situated just outside the charming town of Bayfield, this campground provides a no-frills, accessible option for those embarking on a spontaneous journey or needing a last-minute place to pitch a tent. While it has its unique characteristics, understanding its offerings and setting expectations can lead to a positive and memorable outdoor experience. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Dalrymple Park and Campground, helping local Wisconsinites determine if it's the right fit for their next Upper Midwest adventure.

Dalrymple Park and Campground is strategically located at 86070 WI-13 Trunk, Bayfield, WI 54814, USA. This address places it directly off Highway 13, which is a main artery leading into and out of the popular tourist destination of Bayfield, Wisconsin. Bayfield itself is renowned as the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, making the campground an ideal spot for visitors eager to explore the islands, embark on kayaking trips, or enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the town.

The accessibility of Dalrymple Park and Campground is a significant advantage, especially for those on a "long road trip" or needing a "last minute stop." Being "right off the highway" ensures that campers can easily find and access the site without complicated detours. While this proximity to the highway means "you will hear highway noise," it also translates to unparalleled convenience for quick arrivals and departures. Its close proximity to Bayfield is another major draw; as one reviewer noted, "It was nice being so close to Bayfield," allowing for easy access to town amenities, restaurants, shops, and the Apostle Islands ferry services. This combination of being right off a main road and near a key destination makes Dalrymple Park and Campground a practical choice for mobile campers exploring the Bayfield area and Lake Superior shoreline.

Dalrymple Park and Campground offers a straightforward set of services, primarily catering to those looking for a convenient spot to camp with basic necessities.

  • Campsites: The campground provides designated spots for camping. While some are "right off the lake," offering desirable views, there are a handful of these and they are highly sought after. The terrain is notably "very hilly," which is a consideration for setting up.

  • First-Come, First-Serve (with nuances): The campground's stated policy is "first come first serve." However, it's important for campers to be aware that some spots may have "reservations taped to the numbered pole," which can be "very misleading" upon arrival, particularly during busy periods. This suggests a hybrid system or high demand for certain spots.

  • Tent Camping Suitability: Based on reviews, the campground appears to be particularly suitable for "pitching a tent," making it a viable option for those traveling with minimalist gear.

  • Basic Amenities (implied): While not explicitly detailed, a "campground" generally implies access to essential services like designated camping areas. For more robust facilities like running water bathrooms, campers may need to seek options nearby, as one reviewer mentioned going "down the road to Washington Avenue beach to get a better view of the sunrise as well as a running water bathroom." This indicates that on-site amenities might be limited to very basic provisions.

  • Last-Minute Stop: The campground often serves as a practical "last minute stop" for travelers, suggesting its utility when other plans fall through or for spontaneous trips.

Dalrymple Park and Campground possesses several key features and highlights that make it a unique and often suitable choice for specific types of campers, particularly those valuing location and spontaneity.

  • Proximity to Bayfield: One of its strongest features is being "so close to Bayfield." This allows campers easy access to the charming town, its shops, restaurants, and, most importantly, the ferry services and tours for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

  • Lake Superior Access (for some sites): A "handful of spots right off the lake" offer direct, coveted views and access to Lake Superior, providing a stunning natural backdrop for lucky campers.

  • Great Sunrise Views: Reviewers specifically mention "great sunrise view," with one even seeking out Washington Avenue beach nearby for an even better vantage point. This highlights the scenic beauty available to campers, particularly those along the waterfront.

  • First-Come, First-Serve Opportunity: While there can be nuances with taped reservations, the fundamental "first come first serve" policy allows for spontaneous travel. This is ideal for road-trippers or those who decide on a whim to explore the Bayfield area without prior bookings.

  • Suitable for Tent Campers: The campground seems particularly well-suited for "pitching a tent," indicating it's a practical option for those who prefer traditional tent camping and are looking for a straightforward spot.

  • Practical for Last-Minute Stays: Its nature as a functional "last minute stop" makes it invaluable for travelers who need a place to stay on short notice, especially when other campgrounds might be fully booked.

  • Highway Proximity: Being "right off the highway" ensures easy navigation and quick access, though this does come with highway noise. This feature prioritizes convenience for travelers on the move.

Dalrymple Park and Campground does not explicitly list any ongoing "promotions or special offers." Its primary "promotion" is its inherent nature as a "first come first serve campground" that serves as a practical and often last-minute option for travelers. This accessibility, particularly during peak seasons when other campgrounds might be fully booked, can be seen as its most significant offering.

The affordability implied by its basic amenities and its role as a "last minute stop to pitch a tent" suggests it might be a more budget-friendly option compared to full-service campgrounds in the popular Bayfield area. For those who prioritize location and spontaneity over extensive amenities, the value proposition lies in securing a spot close to Lake Superior and Bayfield without the need for advance reservations. While there are no advertised discounts or bundled deals, the convenience of finding a spot when plans change or on short notice is a valuable "offer" in itself for many road-trippers and spontaneous adventurers. It's always advisable to contact the campground directly to inquire about current rates or any unadvertised special conditions, especially given the "misleading" information about reserved spots mentioned in a review.

To contact Dalrymple Park and Campground and inquire about its availability or specific details, you can use the following information:

  • Address: 86070 WI-13 Trunk, Bayfield, WI 54814, USA

  • Phone: (715) 779-5712

  • Mobile Phone: +1 715-779-5712

Given the "first come first serve" policy and the mention of "reservations taped to the numbered pole," it is highly recommended to call ahead, especially during peak seasons or if you are planning to arrive late. A phone call can help clarify the current availability, understand the best approach for securing a spot, and inquire about any specific details regarding facilities or site conditions that might be relevant to your camping setup. While spontaneity is part of the experience here, a quick call can help manage expectations and ensure a smoother arrival at Dalrymple Park and Campground.

Dalrymple Park and Campground offers a distinct value proposition that makes it suitable for specific types of Wisconsin locals, particularly those who embrace spontaneity and prioritize location. For residents eager to explore the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore or the charming town of Bayfield, this campground provides an incredibly convenient and accessible base. Its "last minute stop" nature is a significant advantage for those who enjoy spur-of-the-moment road trips or find themselves needing a place to stay without prior planning, a common scenario for adventurous Wisconsinites.

While the highway noise and hilly terrain might not appeal to every RVer, the campground's suitability for "pitching a tent" makes it an excellent, no-frills option for traditional tent campers. The chance to snag one of the "handful of spots right off the lake" offers an unforgettable Lake Superior experience, complete with "great sunrise view," which is a true Wisconsin treasure. For locals, Dalrymple Park and Campground serves as a practical, affordable, and strategically located choice for diving into the natural beauty and vibrant culture of the Bayfield area, especially when flexibility and proximity to key attractions are paramount. It's a pragmatic choice for the seasoned Wisconsin explorer who understands and appreciates a campground that prioritizes location and ease of access.

Overall, our experience here was subpar. There are a handful of spots right off the lake if you were lucky enough to grab them. We got lucky by night two. Website says first come first serve; however, we arrived and many spots had reservations taped to the numbered pole. Very misleading. It’s very hilly, if I had an RV would not stay here. For us, it was a last minute stop so this worked. It was nice being so close to bayfield. It is right off the highway so you will hear highway noise.

This is a first come first serve campground. We were on a long road trip and had a need to change plans. This was a great last minute stop to pitch a tent. Great sunrise view. I went down the road to Washington Avenue beach to get a better view of the sunrise as well as a running water bathroom.

This particular campground is very hilly. We had drove in and since our RV is very low to the ground found it extremely difficult to navigate throughout. We almost damaged our rig. If you’re a renter, it’s okay. The area is beautiful and found a much better accommodations at Buffalo Bay Campground, which is just up the road, and part of the casino. They accept reservations. Good luck.

We enjoyed walk in site 28. As a tent camper it gets you away from RVs etc. It has a nice view of the lake with a trail down to it. Site 27 has less of a view. Site 26 has a great view and is where the walk in sites trail starts. Overall campground is simple in a nice way. $30 higher than most but we saw some walking into Bayfield for groceries etc.

This is a gem, for how small the campgrounds were it was well spaced apart at used all available space with out loss of scenery, privacy or sustainability. All in all this is a great getaway for lake tourist that are looking for that lake experience for the night. I had primitive campsite but all other campsites have power. There is city water spigots and restrooms (pit). Per night fee is $30 per nights and their is number that can be reach for firewood at a cheap price
