For residents across Massachusetts seeking an authentic, quiet, and deeply rejuvenating outdoor experience, the DAR Campgrounds within the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) State Forest in Goshen offer a true gem in the heart of Western Massachusetts. Unlike many commercial parks, this public campground, operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), provides a naturally preserved environment. It is celebrated for its lush, wooded setting where the individual campsites are spaced a good distance apart, offering a valued sense of privacy and tranquility.
The 51-site campground is strategically situated on a ridge, flanked by the beautiful Upper Highland Lake and a scenic wetland area known for attracting local wildlife, including moose, bear, and beaver. This location ensures easy access to both water activities and extensive forest trails. Campers consistently praise the high standards of cleanliness maintained by the park staff, particularly noting the modern, clean, and well-ventilated bathroom and shower facilities—a significant highlight for any outdoor enthusiast. The overall atmosphere is quiet, safe, and family-friendly, making it an ideal destination for a quick weekend retreat or an extended stay immersed in nature.
The forest itself was established in 1929 from a generous land donation, and today encompasses over 1,700 acres, providing a vast playground of recreational opportunities. The campground is open seasonally, typically from late May to early October, and reservations are highly recommended, as walk-in camping is generally not permitted due to its popularity, especially among Massachusetts locals who appreciate the great value and proximity.
The DAR Campgrounds are located in the scenic town of Goshen, Massachusetts, with the official address simply listed as Goshen, MA 01032, USA (the physical entrance is at 78 Cape Street). This position places the campground squarely in the quiet, rolling hills of the Berkshires region, yet it remains readily accessible from major population centers across the state.
While offering a feeling of being 'away from it all,' the site is conveniently located to explore the wider region. It is a reasonable driving distance from the Pioneer Valley cities like Northampton and Amherst, and a straightforward journey for those coming from the eastern parts of Massachusetts looking for a mountain and lake escape. The state forest abuts both Upper and Lower Highland Lakes, which are central to the park’s appeal, offering distinct recreational opportunities. The presence of the campground within the State Forest ensures a peaceful natural buffer from highway noise and commercial clutter. Its location makes it a true natural destination, requiring a short drive off the main routes to reach its serene environment.
As a Massachusetts DCR State Forest campground, DAR Campgrounds focuses on essential, well-maintained services to support a quality outdoor experience.
The natural features and recreational offerings at DAR Campgrounds are its greatest draw for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

For Massachusetts residents, the DAR Campgrounds represent the perfect blend of pristine wilderness and accessible state-operated recreation. For locals, the campground offers exceptional value—especially with the Massachusetts resident parking and camping rates—while delivering an experience comparable to more expensive private parks. The privacy of the wooded sites and the consistently clean facilities, often highlighted in camper reviews, alleviate the two most common concerns of public camping.
The area is a true four-season recreational hub, offering swimming and hiking in the summer, spectacular foliage and fire tower views in the fall, and cross-country skiing and ice fishing in the winter. Whether you are looking for a base to explore the quirky towns and vibrant arts scene of the nearby Pioneer Valley or simply wish to disconnect with a quiet weekend of tent camping and lake swimming, the DAR Campgrounds provide a reliable, serene, and uniquely Massachusetts outdoor escape. It is a place of peaceful solitude and family memory-making, making it an ideal choice for any local seeking quality time in the Bay State's beautiful natural environment.
We camp a lot. Much nicer, cleaner bathrooms. Really nice nature center for the kids and the field and picnic table pavilion are a nice bonus. Patrolled frequently so very safe and also in general it was really quiet and the other campers were nice. A lot of tents. Highly recommend.
May 26, 2025 · Jonathan LevineThis is a lovely, wooded campground with the sites a good distance apart. Friendly staff at the gate, and well maintained. Bathrooms are clean and well ventilated with ceiling fans. Water is available in various locations and a convenient dishwashing sink as well. We brought our two little dogs, and they enjoyed a mile long hike that looped down by the lake. We will be back!
Aug 16, 2024 · John KunhardtGreat camping ground. Beautiful forest. Grounds have bathrooms and showers and dumpster. Each camp site has a food storage bin, grill, picnic table and fire pit. Camp sites are usually big enough for 2 vehicles and 2-3 tents. Trails for hiking, beach for swimming, and open field to play. Nice place to get away and enjoy the outdoors
Sep 01, 2021 · William BakerGo camping here every year and never hD a problem
Jun 25, 2025 · David MalaveWould like to give more stars bc the place is clean and well-run, but the markup for out- of-state guests is criminal. $17 for MA residents and $54 for out- of- state. Great way to discourage tourists from coming here and spending $ in your local surrounding areas. Shame on you.
