For Florida locals who crave a genuine escape into nature, away from the constant buzz of technology, this campground offers a refreshing "back-to-basics" approach. It's a place where "the kids actually had to use their imagination to stay busy," and where the crackle of a campfire replaces digital screens. If you’re seeking a relaxed, no-frills environment to reconnect with the outdoors, Donald MacDonald County Campground is a hidden gem on the banks of the Sebastian River.
Florida is famed for its diverse camping options, ranging from amenity-rich RV resorts to remote wilderness sites. Donald MacDonald County Campground firmly belongs in the latter category, providing a truly primitive camping experience that emphasizes natural surroundings and self-reliance. This type of campground is perfect for families looking to instill a love for the outdoors in their children, scout troops, or anyone desiring a break from modern conveniences. It's about enjoying campfires, stargazing, and the simple pleasures of outdoor living. While it might not appeal to those who prefer full hookups and extensive facilities, for many Floridians, Donald MacDonald offers an invaluable opportunity to create lasting memories in a beautiful, natural setting without breaking the bank. This article will provide an engaging and factual overview of what makes this county campground an excellent choice for a genuine outdoor adventure in Sebastian.
Donald MacDonald County Campground is conveniently located at 12315 Roseland Rd, Sebastian, FL 32958, USA. This address places it directly on the banks of the Sebastian River, offering fantastic opportunities for water-based recreation. While the campground provides a rustic feel, its proximity to Roseland Road and the broader Sebastian area ensures good accessibility.
The Sebastian River flows into the Indian River Lagoon, offering paddlers and boaters direct access to this rich estuary and, further downstream, to the Atlantic Ocean via the Sebastian Inlet. The presence of a boat launch directly at the campground is a significant advantage, particularly for those with kayaks, canoes, or small boats. One review explicitly states, "There's even a let off if ya have a boat," and confirms "Great location if you have a kayak, canoe or boat as there is a ramp for water access."
Despite its rustic nature, the campground is not entirely isolated. Sebastian, a charming coastal town known for its fishing, boating, and relaxed atmosphere, is just a short drive away. This means campers can easily access grocery stores for provisions, find local hardware shops for any forgotten camping gear, or enjoy a meal at one of Sebastian's eateries before or after their primitive adventure. While the campground offers a feeling of seclusion and natural immersion, the convenience of nearby town services makes it a practical choice for locals. The area around the campground is generally peaceful, allowing campers to truly disconnect and enjoy the natural sounds of Florida.

Donald MacDonald County Campground offers several appealing features and highlights that draw in campers seeking a genuine outdoor adventure:
The key takeaway from reviews is that while it’s not luxurious, it’s a "nice campground" that delivers on its promise of a simple, enjoyable outdoor escape, with the added bonus of river access.
As a county-operated campground focusing on primitive camping, Donald MacDonald County Campground typically does not run traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the same way a private, commercial campground might. Pricing is generally set by the county and may be fixed.
However, the value offered by Donald MacDonald County Campground is inherently in its affordable rates for a riverside camping experience, especially given its direct boat launch access and the inclusion of basic facilities like showers and flush toilets.

It's campground with more than enough space for everyone. The fireplace was enough to make steaks and veggies. We had a blast!! Rustic. Thank good no power poles to charge phones. The kids actually had to use their imagination to stay busy. Bathrooms have showers to wash the smoke smell off. And toilets flush. So no piss smell. There's even a let off if ya have a boat.
Apr 21, 2025 · Jessie DNice campground with deep sites. Only about 15 to 20 sites total. Great location if you have a kayak, canoe or boat as there is a ramp for water access. Each site has a concrete picnic table which is more comfortable than it looks. Bathroom is just average with two stalls and two showers.
Feb 10, 2025 · Paul MeolaI absolutely love this place. The scenery is amazing, like something out of a fairytale. The grounds are clean and well maintained. The bathrooms are always clean and the showers are great. I love the lil water bottle filler they added to the fountains. The camp hosts are spectacular! They don't stand for BS & make sure everyone who comes has an amazing experience. I can't wait to go back. 10/10
Sep 07, 2024 · Dawn ThompsonI have been camping here for the last 5 years , almost the same site and same set up everytime , never had a problem being there with my family and kids until today , new grounds person which we’ve never seen or met before kicked us out and threatened to call cops when we asked any kind or normal question because we were over the limit for the site because of our kids . We have been camping here with the same kids same family for years until this new grounds lady. Super rude and disrespectful, I had no idea she was a grounds person of this campground and I was worried she was a homeless crackhead walking up in our site , she did not seem well ! Super upsetting we lost our stay-cation vacation spot right where we live :/ sad honest paying locals get treated like garbage by the homeless that get to live there for free …..
Aug 03, 2024 · Jonathan HurstFor all of you tent campers, this place is really cool. All private sites tucked nicely in the natural vegetation, good size sites and clean. Concrete picnic tables and fire rings. Two fishing piers tucked away along the Sébastien River. We were told bathrooms are very clean. This camping area looks like old Florida with oak trees and hanging moss and thick vegetation. We don't tent camp but this place was cool.
