Introduction / Overview
For Minnesotans seeking a classic Northwoods retreat, the Echo Lake Campground offers a welcoming sanctuary deep within the Superior National Forest. Located off the legendary Echo Trail, this campground is celebrated for its serene atmosphere and deep connection to the region's expansive wilderness. While it may be described by visitors as "in the middle of nowhere," this remoteness is precisely its greatest asset, providing a peaceful alternative to the busier resort scenes and urban campgrounds across the state.
Echo Lake Campground provides a quintessential up-north experience, accommodating various camping styles from RVs and trailers (up to about 45 feet in length) to traditional tent camping. It is a non-electric facility, which helps maintain the quiet, natural ambiance that campers crave. The campground features a mix of reservable sites and first-come, first-served options, offering flexibility for both planners and spontaneous adventurers. Surrounded by a diverse canopy of aspen, balsam, spruce, maple, and pine trees, the campground provides ample shade and a sense of privacy, making it an ideal base camp for exploring the nearby wonders of Voyageurs National Park and the wider Superior National Forest.
Situated on the south shore of the 1,222-acre Echo Lake, the area is a popular destination for anglers, paddlers, and hikers. It perfectly embodies the natural beauty of the Canadian Shield ecoregion, complete with scenic rocky terrain and abundant wildlife. From the cleanly maintained sites to the helpful on-site camp hosts, Echo Lake Campground is designed for a comfortable, self-sufficient stay in a truly stunning environment.
Location and Accessibility
Echo Lake Campground is tucked away in the LaCroix Ranger District of the Superior National Forest, approximately 22 miles northeast of the community of Orr, MN. The official address, Forest Rte 841, Orr, MN 55771, USA, pinpoints its location off the famed Echo Trail. This trail, officially designated as County Road 116, is a remote country road that traverses through the heart of the Western Superior National Forest, known for its scenic beauty but also for being unpaved and sometimes rough.
Access requires a dedicated drive into the wilderness. The recommended route from Orr involves taking St. Louis County Road 23 to Buyck (about 16 miles), continuing as County Road 23 turns into County Road 24 for about 4 miles, and then turning right onto the Echo Trail (County Road 116). The campground entrance road, Forest Route 841, is a short drive of less than a mile off the Echo Trail.
While the location is remote, the access road itself is well-maintained by Forest Service standards. Recent visitor feedback indicates that the road is often freshly graded, ensuring that it is generally accessible for both RVs and passenger vehicles, though caution should always be exercised on gravel surfaces. This remote but manageable access ensures a genuine feeling of escape, while its proximity to the entrance of Voyageurs National Park makes it a superb starting point for day trips to the renowned water-based park.

Echo Lake is in the middle of nowhere, but that is one of the things I loved about it. We camped in the middle of August and only 4 other sites were occupied. The camp host went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay and even delivered firewood to our site when we arrived late Sunday afternoon so we didn't have to drive back to town. We stayed here as a base for our day trip to Voyageurs National Park and took the Echo Trail out as we headed to the North Shore. Such a cool drive (dirt road). Perfect location and scenery and would love to make it back here!
Feb 04, 2024 · Lauren BierbachFreshly graded road and cut grass. Decent privacy between most sites. Outhouses were super clean, but no TP. One generator running for hours killed the vibe. Lots of open stops to choose from on a Saturday night in Sept.
Sep 09, 2024 · Benjamin FriesenRemote location, but that is part of the draw. A couple of campers did run their generator during the day, but we were on the lake Canoeing Beautiful sunsets.
Jul 09, 2022 · Matt FaughnVery buggy. Nice beach and campsite. Middle of the week quiet but as you near the weekend, sites fill up with campers - unfortunately, generators are not regulated and we heard one running all day and all night.
Jun 24, 2022 · C BSome sites are first come, first serve - yet even on Fourth of July weekend we were able to snag one. Very clean and such an amazing camp host. Do NOT forget bug spray, the mosquitoes eventually died down at night (with help from the spray a neighbor gave us & smoke from the campfire).
