Nestled within the vast George Washington National Forest, this campground provides a rustic yet accommodating environment for families, couples, and individuals looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the outdoors. It's a place where the sounds of the forest and the nearby creek replace the buzz of daily life, fostering a sense of peace and relaxation that's increasingly rare.
Elizabeth Furnace Family Campground emphasizes a primitive camping experience, meaning it focuses on providing essential facilities while allowing the natural surroundings to be the main attraction. This approach appeals to campers who appreciate simplicity and the raw beauty of the wilderness. While it offers basic amenities, it encourages visitors to be self-reliant and to embrace the quiet solitude that comes with being in a national forest. The campground's family-friendly atmosphere, as suggested by its name and visitor feedback, indicates it's a place where lasting memories are made around a campfire and on winding forest trails.
The area surrounding the campground is rich in both natural beauty and historical significance. The nearby historic Elizabeth Furnace, a remnant of early American industry, provides a unique educational element to any visit, allowing campers to combine their outdoor adventure with a glimpse into the past. For locals across Virginia, Elizabeth Furnace Family Campground offers a convenient and accessible escape to a serene environment, perfect for weekend getaways or longer, rejuvenating stays amidst the natural splendor of the Shenandoah Valley.
Elizabeth Furnace Family Campground is located at 15618 Fort Valley Rd, Fort Valley, VA 22652, USA. This address places it squarely within the George Washington National Forest, specifically in the Lee Ranger District, and alongside the scenic Passage Creek. Fort Valley itself is known for its beautiful, secluded setting, nestled between two ridges of the Massanutten Mountain, which creates a truly immersive natural experience.
Despite its primitive and secluded feel, the campground is reasonably accessible for Virginia residents. It's approximately 1.5 hours by car from Washington, D.C., making it a manageable drive for a weekend trip from Northern Virginia and the broader D.C. metropolitan area. The journey to the campground involves scenic drives, primarily along VA Route 678 (Fort Valley Road), which meanders through the picturesque landscapes of the Shenandoah Valley.
A key highlight of its location is its direct proximity to Passage Creek, a designated trout stream, providing immediate access for fishing enthusiasts. The campground also serves as a trailhead for numerous hiking opportunities, including trails that lead to the historic Elizabeth Furnace, Buzzard Rock, and other captivating points of interest within the national forest. While the remote setting means cell phone service is typically limited or non-existent, this is often viewed as a positive by visitors seeking to truly disconnect. Access to the campground is generally straightforward, with clear signage within the recreation area.

Promotions or Special Offers:
As a U.S. Forest Service campground, Elizabeth Furnace Family Campground operates on a standard fee structure rather than offering frequent commercial promotions. However, the most significant "offer" available is the reduced rate for holders of the Interagency Senior Pass or Access Pass. These passes allow eligible individuals (U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged 62 or older, or those with permanent disabilities) to camp for a 50% discount off the standard nightly fee.
Reservations for individual campsites are typically made through Recreation.gov. It is highly recommended to book well in advance, especially during peak seasons (spring and fall) and weekends, as this popular campground can fill up quickly. While there may not be specific seasonal discounts beyond the federal pass programs, the inherent affordability of national forest camping itself makes it an attractive option for many Virginians. For the most current fee information and to check site availability, consulting the official Recreation.gov listing or contacting the Lee Ranger District office of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests directly is the best course of action.

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
For Virginians, Elizabeth Furnace Family Campground offers a truly suitable and appealing option for those who prioritize a rustic, peaceful, and affordable outdoor experience. Its location deep within the George Washington National Forest, alongside Passage Creek, is its strongest asset, providing immediate access to a wealth of natural activities like fishing and extensive hiking. For families and individuals looking to genuinely "disconnect" from screens and the daily grind, the limited cell service here becomes a feature, encouraging deeper engagement with nature and each other.
While the campground embraces a primitive style (no hookups, vault toilets), the consistent feedback on the cleanliness of the outhouses and the availability of potable water from a hand-pumped well indicates that essential comforts are maintained. The affordability of the campsites, especially with federal pass discounts, makes it an excellent value for locals seeking a budget-friendly escape.
The fact that it's family-friendly and allows pets (on leash) further broadens its appeal, allowing many Virginians to include all members of their household in their outdoor adventures. Despite some potential for noise in the fall, the overall experience is consistently described as decent and conducive to relaxation. For local residents who appreciate a back-to-basics approach to camping, value tranquil natural settings, and want convenient access to the recreational treasures of the Shenandoah Valley, Elizabeth Furnace Family Campground provides an ideal and authentic outdoor getaway close to home.

I stayed 3 nights in site #1. Not all of the sites are conducive to van camping. But in my opinion, the campground is absolutely perfect. The showers weren't open yet. The vault toilet was fine.
May 23, 2025 · Ellen SumnersOur family comes here pretty often. There’s no service but it’s nice to just disconnect. The sites are decent. I’ve only ever used the out houses, which are pretty clean for what they are. Maybe could install a hand sanitizer option for on your way out but i just bring something in with me. (Closing of the lid is very loud, i refuse to touch it with my hands) It’s definitely More noisy in the fall vs the summer from my experience. Overall decent experience each time we come.
Oct 25, 2024 · Inkedh3artIt was peaceful, quiet and well taken care of. You aren’t right on top of people which I love and it actually feels like camping. The bathrooms and showers were kept clean and everyone you met was friendly or kept to themselves! The river is a short walk away in campground! We are definitely going back. It’s first come first serve so you need to make sure you get there at a good time to get a good spot (or spot at all) lol
Jul 09, 2024 · ashley henriottWe stayed for 9 days @ 5./ day. There are many trails to hike, a beautiful picnic area with a restored cabin, and pretty suspension bridge over the stream. The shower/restrooms were closed for the winter, but, there are a couple of vault toilets. There is also a large open grassy area with horseshoe pits. Great place to take the family camping.
Dec 01, 2021 · Lynn HasteSo great. My favorite camping site. Great showers, cozy camp sites ( get there early to pick out the one you want. ) Amazing scenery and hiking trails. 😀
