Elk Point City Park and Campground About
South Dakota residents, are you searching for a practical, affordable, and easy-to-access spot for an overnight stop or a simple getaway, particularly when traveling across the state? Look no further than Elk Point City Park and Campground. Nestled directly beside I-29 in the charming town of Elk Point, this city-run campground offers a no-frills, yet highly functional and budget-friendly option for campers. It’s an ideal choice for those who prioritize convenience and value, especially when a quick and easy setup is key.
Elk Point City Park and Campground is a straightforward, community-focused camping facility managed by the City of Elk Point. Designed primarily for convenience, it offers basic amenities at a very reasonable price, making it an excellent value for modern travelers and local families. Its most notable feature is its immediate proximity to Interstate 29, allowing for quick in-and-out access. While its location makes it particularly popular for overnight stays, the campground also benefits from being part of a larger city park. This means campers have direct access to recreational facilities like ball fields and a great playground, adding value for those traveling with children.
The campsites are situated on grass, which many campers find appealing for its comfortable feel underfoot and for keeping water hoses clean when rolling them up. Guests appreciate the self-registration process, offering flexibility for late arrivals. While it is important to note the presence of interstate traffic noise due to its proximity to I-29, many find practical solutions, such as using air conditioning or fans, to mitigate this. The cleanliness of the bathrooms and the overall well-maintained nature of the park grounds consistently receive positive remarks. Elk Point City Park and Campground delivers on its promise of being a simple, effective, and economical choice for campers passing through or looking for a convenient local base.
Elk Point City Park and Campground is conveniently located at 400-498 S Harrison St, Elk Point, SD 57025, USA. Its most significant locator is its direct adjacency to Interstate 29 (I-29), making it incredibly easy to find and access for travelers.
For those traveling on I-29, the campground is just a few moments off the exit, positioned directly alongside the interstate. This prime location minimizes detours and maximizes convenience, especially for those looking for a quick overnight stop during a longer journey across South Dakota or into neighboring states. While the immediate proximity to the highway is a major advantage for accessibility, it's worth noting that it also means the sound of traffic, particularly truck engine brakes, can be noticeable. However, for a quick and easy "in and out" experience, it's hard to beat.
The campground is situated within the broader Elk Point City Park, meaning it benefits from the park's amenities and general upkeep. Elk Point itself is a small, friendly community in Union County, South Dakota, providing basic services and a local feel. Its position in the southeastern corner of the state makes it a practical stop for those traveling between larger population centers or exploring the regional attractions. The grass parking also provides a soft landing after a day of driving, making setup and breakdown less arduous.

Elk Point City Park and Campground, while simple, offers several key features and highlights that make it a practical and appealing choice for many campers.
- Exceptional Value: At around $15 a night with electricity, it is consistently highlighted as a very affordable option, especially in today's camping market. This makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers and locals.

- Well-Maintained City Park Setting: The campground is part of a larger city park, which ensures the grounds are generally well-kept and includes amenities like a notable playground for children.
- Grassy Campsites: Parking on grass is a distinct advantage, providing a softer surface to walk on and reducing the mess when dealing with water hoses, as noted by appreciative campers.
- Clean Facilities: The bathrooms are frequently praised for their cleanliness, which is a crucial factor for a comfortable camping experience.
- Self-Registration Convenience: The ability to self-register offers flexibility and ease for campers arriving at any time of day or night.

As a city-run campground focused on providing affordable and convenient camping, Elk Point City Park and Campground does not typically offer complex promotional deals or seasonal discounts in the way larger, privately owned resorts might. Its core "promotion" is its consistently low nightly rate, which is already considered a significant value by campers.
- Budget-Friendly Nightly Rate: The primary "special offer" is its standard rate, often cited around $15 per night with electricity. This pricing is very competitive and significantly lower than many private campgrounds or even some state parks.
- Inclusion of Basic Amenities: The cost includes access to essential amenities like electricity and clean bathrooms, which at this price point is highly valued.
Given its operational model as a city park campground, direct inquiries about potential group rates for very large gatherings (like family reunions utilizing the ball fields) or any unadvertised local discounts for specific community groups might be worthwhile, but are not typically part of standard public offerings. For the most accurate and current pricing, it is always best to contact the City of Elk Point or the park directly.

Customer Reviews
This is a city park. It's located directly beside I29. It's $15 a night with electricity. Which is cheap these days. Water is available but not at each site. Bathrooms were clean. For an overnight stay it was quick in and out. You park on grass which is an advantage when you're rolling up a water hose. No muddy hose to roll up. Also nice to walk on. Great playground for kids here. You self register. You are right beside some ball fields so I imagine it might be a little bit noisy on a Friday night. The biggest issue was the I29 traffic noise. It's really loud. Particularly if you have to have your windows open or if you were in a tent. We put our air-conditioning on with a fan running all the time. It helped drown out most, but not all of the trucks going by with their Jake/engine brakes. I've attached a couple of pictures of just how close you are to the traffic.
Great little park. Right off the highway. Easy access for a break from driving for the night. Awesome playground for the kids. Didn't use the bathouse.
It's a very peaceful park with easy in and out for campers. Nice playground, scenery etc. I'm giving it 3 stars bc the bathhouse really could use an upgrade or a rebuild, where there are two shower heads in one shower stall. I was thankful that a stranger didn't just come join me with no shower curtain anywhere in sight. This place has SO much potential. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and felt safe while there.
We were traveling through and needed a one night stay. Would have loved to stay longer. What a great clean well kept city park. Sites had electric and water. Clean bathrooms and showers. This is a great town so stop for one night or longer..
This place is hard to find from Main Street. The signs there are wonderfully vague and only point to the SW. Finding this place is the hardest and from there things improve. You can not beat $20 a night for water/electric with flush toilets, showers, fire rings and picnic tables. Not much shade. Also you will parking your vehicle on grass. Usually quiet and uncrowded. Be aware there is noise from the interstate behind the park and if it ever was crowded the sites are very close together. We visited May 2023.
