Garey Lake State Forest Campground About
For those of us in Michigan seeking a tranquil escape into nature, Garey Lake State Forest Campground offers an authentic rustic camping experience nestled in the beautiful landscape near Empire. This charming campground, once an apple orchard, sits adjacent to the serene Garey Lake, providing a perfect setting for a quiet getaway. If you’re looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Northern Michigan, this hidden gem is certainly worth considering.
Garey Lake State Forest Campground is managed by Interlochen State Park, ensuring it meets state standards for natural resource recreation. It's known for its peaceful atmosphere and is often less crowded than some of the more bustling campgrounds, particularly during weekdays. This makes it an ideal spot for those who truly appreciate solitude and the sounds of the Michigan wilderness. Whether you're a seasoned camper or new to the joys of the outdoors, Garey Lake provides a welcoming environment to enjoy Michigan's pristine forests and waters.
One of the most appealing aspects of Garey Lake State Forest Campground is its convenient location. Situated in Benzie County, it’s just eight miles southeast of Empire. You can reach it easily via M-72, then turning onto Plowman Road and finally Pettengill Road. While it feels wonderfully secluded, it’s not so far off the beaten path that it becomes difficult to access. This balance of remoteness and accessibility is key for many Michigan campers, allowing for a true wilderness experience without a grueling journey.
The proximity to Empire also means that campers have access to a charming small town should they need supplies or wish to explore local attractions. Empire is the headquarters for the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, offering incredible opportunities for hiking, dune climbing, and enjoying the stunning views of Lake Michigan. This makes Garey Lake State Forest Campground a fantastic base camp for exploring one of Michigan's most iconic natural wonders. You can enjoy the rustic tranquility of the campground during your stay, knowing that additional recreational activities and services are just a short drive away.

For Michiganders, Garey Lake State Forest Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s an accessible gateway to the profound beauty of Northern Michigan. Its rustic nature means you won't find bustling crowds or extensive modern amenities, which is precisely its charm. It caters to those who appreciate the simpler pleasures of camping: the crackle of a campfire, the quiet rustle of leaves, and the starry skies free from city lights. The fact that it’s often "rarely used," as noted by visitors, especially during the week, provides a fantastic opportunity for Michigan residents to truly escape and find peace without having to travel far from home.
The reviews from fellow Michigan campers highlight its well-maintained sites and the good lake access for fishing, even if the fish are sometimes elusive! The mention of being able to hear the road from some campsites is a minor point, but it's important for setting expectations – this is a rustic campground, close to a county road, not deep wilderness, yet it still offers a significant sense of solitude. The close proximity of some sites is also a bonus for groups of friends or families who want to camp together.

Customer Reviews
Campsite is well taken care of. Some of the sites are close together, would be great for groups. Good lake access. I saw a bunch of people fishing (not so much with the catching). Pump does work, it just takes a bit to get going. You can hear the road from the campsites.
Pretty nice campground that's rarely used. Has 12 total sites that are pretty spaced apart (a couple are close enough in the field that you can double up the sites and got a bunch of tents on it. $15 a night and chances are you'll be the only one here unless it's a Fri or sat.
We camped here as a school group after Labor Day weekend. This was the most wide-open area. Other sites were more covered with trees. The lake is easily accessible.
We loved our campsite here! It was tucked back behind some bushes and a trio of trees, which helped to shield it from the rain, hail, and high winds we had on our trip. The campground was clean and quiet, and the restrooms were well kept up - one outhouse for men and one for women, so there was less traffic to each than some of the other state campgrounds we've been at. While the nat'l park campgrounds near by were filled, Garey Lake only had a few campers in it, even though it was the weekend. We'll definitely keep this campground in mind when we camp in this area again.
Quiet, peaceful, small rustic state forest campground which is my one of my absolute favorites! Great little lake for kayaking and fishing. Small boat launch with sandy bottom. Close to trails.
