Veterans Memorial State Forest Campground is a testament to Michigan's commitment to providing accessible outdoor recreation. As a state forest campground, it offers a more primitive and natural camping experience compared to highly developed private parks. This means fewer frills but more genuine connection to the wilderness, with spacious sites and a strong emphasis on the natural environment. The campground is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), ensuring it adheres to standards for environmental preservation and public enjoyment.
The atmosphere at Veterans Memorial State Forest Campground is typically quiet and peaceful, attracting campers who seek solitude and a break from urban noise. Reviews highlight the generous spacing between sites, providing a sense of privacy amidst the trees. While some campers note the proximity to a road and occasional traffic noise, the overall sentiment is one of tranquility and immersion in nature. It's a place where the sounds of birds and the rustle of leaves often dominate, offering a refreshing escape. The campground is particularly favored by those interested in river activities, given its direct access to the Platte River. During the quieter winter months, visitors might even have the luxury of having the campground almost entirely to themselves, enhancing the sense of a private natural retreat.
Veterans Memorial State Forest Campground is ideally situated at Beulah, MI 49617, USA. This location places it squarely within Michigan's beautiful Benzie County, a region renowned for its stunning lakes, dense forests, and proximity to Lake Michigan. Specifically, the campground is located along the scenic Platte River, offering direct river access and views from some sites.
Accessing the campground is generally straightforward for those traveling by vehicle. Beulah is a well-known town in Northwest Lower Michigan, easily reachable via major state highways such as US-31 and M-115, which connect to various parts of the state. While the campground offers a feeling of being "away from it all," it's not so remote that it becomes difficult to find or navigate. The roads leading to and within the campground are typically well-maintained gravel surfaces, suitable for most vehicles and RVs, though campers should always drive cautiously on unpaved roads.
The geographical positioning of Veterans Memorial State Forest Campground makes it an excellent base for exploring a wealth of regional attractions. It's just a short drive from Crystal Lake, the charming village of Beulah, and the larger town of Frankfort, which offers additional amenities and access to Lake Michigan. More famously, the iconic Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, with its breathtaking vistas and hiking trails, is also within easy reach. This combination of serene campground ambiance and proximity to major tourist destinations makes Veterans Memorial State Forest Campground a strategic and appealing choice for Michigan adventurers.
State Forest Campgrounds in Michigan, including Veterans Memorial, operate differently from private campgrounds when it comes to pricing and promotions. They typically do not offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the same way a commercial business might. Their pricing is usually standardized and set by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
For the most current and accurate information on daily rates and Recreation Passport requirements, it is best to consult the official Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact the campground directly. Reservations for some DNR campgrounds can be made online, while others, particularly more rustic ones, may operate on a first-come, first-served basis with self-registration.

It's a place where the true essence of Michigan camping can be experienced, making it an ideal choice for a variety of local adventurers.
Firstly, its rustic charm appeals to Michiganders who seek genuine immersion in the wilderness. Unlike highly developed parks, this campground prioritizes natural beauty and spaciousness, allowing for a quieter, more private camping experience. The generous distance between sites, as noted by visitors, provides a sense of seclusion that is often hard to find. Secondly, its direct access to the Platte River is a significant draw for local outdoor enthusiasts. Whether it's for a serene kayaking or canoeing trip down the river, fly-fishing for trout, or simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of flowing water, the river is a central feature that many Michiganders cherish. Whether it’s a warm summer evening around a crackling campfire or a quiet winter morning surrounded by snow-dusted trees, Veterans Memorial State Forest Campground provides a consistent backdrop for creating lasting memories. It’s a testament to Michigan’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and offering genuine outdoor experiences right in the backyard of its residents.
Plenty of space and trees between sites. But even the back of the campground is still too close to the road, the noise of cars can be heard. I visited during the winter and had the place to myself. A few of the sites have views and access to the river
Feb 24, 2021 · Malcolm CampWe dropped our kyakks into the Platte River here for a 3.5 hour trip.
Sep 17, 2022 · Mee CoolAbsolutely the best, scored a spot near the river. Perfect for the kids. Vaulted toilets and manual pump driven water(best coffee I ever had was made with this water). Would stay here again and again.
Mar 30, 2024 · Brandy JohnsonBeautiful state park campground. Very peaceful and quiet. Restrooms were very well maintained. Awesome river access with trail and launch/loading dock for kayaking/tubing/canoeing etc. My only complaint is that the place was covered in Poison Ivy . I mean covered. We could not walk anywhere but the roads, kids couldn't play in the woods or extra area on our site. It was awful. Other than that absolutely beautiful rustic style campground.
Jul 05, 2021 · Ashley A (Ash)Rustic Campground. Vault toilets are clean. There is space between sites. Everything you need. The water pump is either a bit underused or needing a re-drill. High rust content on this last visit.
