Introduction / Overview
For New York residents, the Adirondack Park represents the ultimate escape into the "Forever Wild" principle, and within its vast six million acres lies a truly unique destination: Great Camp Santanoni. While not a traditional, amenity-rich drive-up campground, Santanoni offers New Yorkers an unparalleled blend of world-class history and authentic backcountry camping within the stunning Santanoni Preserve. This National Historic Landmark, built in the 1890s for Albany banker Robert C. Pruyn and his wife Anna, stands as one of the largest and most sophisticated surviving examples of the 'Adirondack Great Camp' architectural style.
The preservation of this sprawling, 12,900-acre estate, which includes the Gate Lodge, the historic Farm Complex, and the multi-building Main Camp on the shores of Newcomb Lake, is a testament to dedicated conservation efforts. Visitors who trek the four-and-a-half to five-mile carriage road into the main camp today are not just entering a public preserve; they are stepping back into the Gilded Age, where they can witness the incredible rustic architecture and the sprawling vision of the era's elite. As one visitor noted, the preservation is "nothing short of incredible," with restored structures like the boathouse showcasing the focused effort to conserve this landmark. It is a one-of-a-kind site that combines strenuous outdoor activity with historical interpretation, a perfect reflection of the adventurous spirit of the Adirondacks.
Location and Accessibility
Great Camp Santanoni is located in the central Adirondack town of Newcomb, New York. Its secluded nature is integral to its history and current use, offering a true wilderness experience that begins the moment you arrive. The official address provided is 1010 Newcomb Lake Rd, Newcomb, NY 12852, USA, which corresponds to the Gate Lodge complex and the primary trailhead access point.
Accessibility to the historic complexes is a key feature that defines the Santanoni experience. The entire preserve is open year-round, 24 hours a day, but the five-mile historic carriage road leading from the Gate Lodge to the Main Camp is closed to public motorized vehicles—including electric bikes. This restriction ensures a tranquil, historic atmosphere. Visitors must plan to access the Main Camp via self-propelled means, which include:
For those unable to walk or bike the distance, a horse-drawn wagon service is available for a fee during the summer season, providing a historically authentic and convenient means of transport. The first mile of the carriage road leads directly to the Farm Complex, while the full five-mile journey culminates at the main complex on Newcomb Lake, providing visitors with a progressive experience through the estate.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For New York residents, Great Camp Santanoni is not just a place to pitch a tent; it is a cultural and recreational pilgrimage that is entirely unique to the Empire State. Located in the heart of the Adirondacks, it offers an accessible, yet challenging, multi-modal outdoor experience—whether hiking, biking, skiing, or taking the historic horse-drawn wagon—that truly earns the "forever wild" distinction. The primitive backcountry camping opportunities, with limited but available sites and lean-tos, cater directly to the local New Yorker who values solitude and minimal impact recreation over modern hookups and amenities.

We did a short 1 mile walk up the gravel road to the remains of the farm. It was a great walk on a beautiful day in September. We plan on going back soon for the 5 mile walk to the camp proper.
Sep 18, 2025 · Dan LynchThat the camp is preserved in spite of fire, neglect and generations is nothing short of incredible. When I visited 20+ years ago the boat house was sagging into the water, and I expected to find it a ruin by now - not so. A focused effort has been made to preserve and conserve this landmark of the Adirondacks.
May 15, 2024 · Matthew VercantBeautiful old lodge in great shape with a friendly guide on premises. The lake is wild and the trail around it very lightly traveled. There are 8 campsites for tents well away from anybody. We were the only ones there.
Aug 28, 2023 · Wendylee MaddoxBeen coming here since birth with my family. Very secluded and serine environment. Lake is always gorgeous any time of year. The buildings around here are always fun to explore. They have available the historical information on the buildings and land. The campsights and trails around here are also worth the hike, never a dull corner.
Sep 17, 2018 · Joshua BrownI love camp Santanoni in Newcomb , New York … the beauty of the 10mile round trip hike , the history of the camp and the memories associated with it. I’ve been going here with my dad since before I was a teenager . This past weekend Newcomb celebrated Teddy Roosevelt Days. Commemorating his visit to the camp many years ago when he was Governor of NY. The town offered free horse drawn wagon rides back to the camp and we took them up on it so our grandchildren could go … continuing the family tradition. I should also mention that the state will pay for anyone who has a disability and one helper to ride the wagons back to the camp .
