Green Ridge State Forest Campground #4 About
For Marylanders yearning for a truly secluded and authentic outdoor experience, Green Ridge State Forest Campground #4 in Flintstone, MD, presents an ideal choice. Nestled within the vast expanse of Green Ridge State Forest, this particular campsite offers a deep immersion into the wilderness, appealing to those who prioritize privacy and tranquility over modern amenities. It’s a perfect spot for individuals, couples, or small groups looking to disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with the serene sounds and abundant wildlife of Maryland's largest continuous block of forest land.
Green Ridge State Forest Campground #4 is part of an extensive network of primitive campsites meticulously spread throughout the forest, ensuring a significant degree of separation between sites. Visitors consistently praise its isolation, describing it as having "Very private campsites spread all through the forest." This emphasis on privacy is a major draw for those seeking a quiet retreat where they can truly relax and enjoy the "Beautiful scenery." One camper noted it as "a great spot to relax for the weekend," underscoring its appeal for a peaceful escape.
While the site offers an easy approach, being "Easy to get to" and "semi level," campers should be aware of a few nuances. There might be "some road traffic" and it's important to "watch out for the tree stump in the middle of the area; it'll rip up a low car," indicating that while accessible, a degree of caution is advised, especially for vehicles with lower clearance. The natural setting means "Not a lot of grass left" and it's "Not so good to solar charge," which are important considerations for those relying on solar power. Despite these minor points, the site's overall quietude, combined with the exciting possibility of "bear sighted the first night," paints a picture of a truly wild and engaging camping experience, making Campground #4 a cherished spot for Maryland locals seeking a genuine forest adventure.
Green Ridge State Forest Campground #4 is located at 13801 Old Cumberland Rd, Flintstone, MD 21530, USA. This address places it within the sprawling Green Ridge State Forest, Maryland's largest public land holding, situated in Allegany County in the western part of the state. Its setting provides a remote and wild feel while still being accessible for Maryland residents.
Access to Campsite #4, like other primitive sites in Green Ridge State Forest, typically involves navigating unpaved or less-maintained forest roads. Reviews indicate it's "Easy to get to" and "semi level," which is a positive for campers. However, a crucial detail to note is the warning to "watch out for the tree stump in the middle of the area; it'll rip up a low car." This suggests that while generally accessible, vehicles with higher clearance might be preferable, especially after rain, to avoid potential damage. Despite "some road traffic," the site remains "quiet," emphasizing its secluded nature. For Maryland locals, this location offers a relatively straightforward drive to an authentic wilderness experience, making it an ideal choice for a quick escape or a longer, immersive outdoor adventure. Always download or print maps in advance, as cell service can be unreliable in these remote forest areas.
Green Ridge State Forest Campground #4, consistent with its designation as a primitive campsite, focuses on providing basic, essential services that support a rustic outdoor stay. Unlike private campgrounds or more developed state park campgrounds, the emphasis here is on self-sufficiency and minimal amenities to maintain the natural integrity of the forest. The primary services offered directly at the campsite typically include:
- Designated Campsite: A clearly marked, individual camping spot, offering personal space and organization. The site is noted as "semi level," aiding in comfortable tent pitching or camper setup.
- Fire Pit: Each site is equipped with a designated fire ring, essential for cooking, warmth, and classic campfire ambiance. It’s important to always check for fire bans before lighting a fire.
- Picnic Table: A sturdy picnic table is provided at each site, offering a convenient surface for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
- Access via Forest Roads: The campsite is accessible via designated forest roads, facilitating vehicle access to the site. While "easy to get to," campers should be mindful of potential obstacles like a "tree stump in the middle of the area" that could affect low-clearance vehicles.
- Primitive Toilets (nearby): While not directly at the individual site, primitive vault toilets or pit toilets are typically available at various points within Green Ridge State Forest to service groups of campsites. Visitors should expect rustic facilities.
- Waste Disposal (limited): Campers are generally expected to pack out what they pack in. There may be limited designated trash disposal points within the forest, but practicing Leave No Trace principles is highly encouraged.
- Information and Regulations: Upon reserving a site, campers typically receive information about forest rules, regulations, and any specific safety advisories.
It is crucial for visitors to understand that "primitive camping" means there are no modern amenities such as electric hookups, potable water at each site, or flush toilets. Campers should plan to bring their own water and be prepared for a truly rustic experience.

Customer Reviews
Very private campsites spread all through the forest. Beautiful scenery. It's a great spot to relax for the weekend.
Easy to get to, semi level, some road traffic, quiet, bear sited the first night, watch out for the tree stump in the middle of the area; it'll rip up a low car. Not a lot of grass left. Not so good to solar charge.
Very beautiful area. The registrar office has souvenir items for sale but does not accept credit cards, cash or check only. The Overlook behind the office (follow the paved path) has awesome views. A must see. The Pine Lick Trail starts behind the restrooms at the registrar office and trees are marked with blue paint. The trail is narrow and goes up and down constantly. Bring a hiking pole or staff. Be aware of private property when using the trails.
I have been camping here for a long time. This place never disappoint me
