This article will provide an in-depth look at Hidden Acres Family Campground, focusing on its location and accessibility within Virginia, the services it aims to offer, and the features that are being improved. We'll also consider recent customer feedback, which offers a valuable, albeit mixed, perspective on the current state and future direction of the campground. Our goal is to provide clear, factual information to help Virginians determine if Hidden Acres Family Campground is the right choice for their next outdoor adventure.
Hidden Acres Family Campground is conveniently situated at 17391 Richmond Turnpike, Milford, VA 22514, USA. Milford is a small community nestled in Caroline County, Virginia, offering a peaceful, rural setting that is still remarkably accessible to major population centers within the Commonwealth.
The campground's location on Richmond Turnpike (also known as US-301) is a significant advantage for accessibility. US-301 is a primary north-south artery that runs through eastern Virginia, connecting travelers from Maryland to North Carolina. This makes Hidden Acres easily reachable for RVs and vehicles of all sizes, whether arriving from Richmond to the south or Fredericksburg and points north. The well-maintained nature of a U.S. highway ensures smooth travel directly to the campground entrance.
Despite its direct access to a major route, Milford maintains a charming, quiet atmosphere, allowing campers to feel truly removed from urban hustle while still being within a reasonable drive of essential services. For instance, Richmond, the state capital, is approximately an hour's drive away, offering extensive shopping, dining, and cultural attractions. Nearby towns also provide basic necessities like grocery stores and fuel. This blend of easy highway access and a tranquil rural setting makes Hidden Acres Family Campground a practical and desirable location for Virginia locals seeking an outdoor escape without venturing into truly remote areas. Its proximity to major thoroughfares also makes it a convenient stop for those traveling through Virginia.
Hidden Acres Family Campground is in a transitional phase under new management, and while some services may still be undergoing improvements, the goal is to provide a comprehensive range of amenities for campers. Based on the provided information and common campground offerings, the following services are intended or currently available:
- Campsites for RVs and Tents: The campground offers various sites designed to accommodate both recreational vehicles and traditional tent campers. While specifics on hookups (water, electric, sewer) for all sites are not fully detailed, the positive review mentioning improvements suggests that functional sites are a priority. One past review mentioned issues with "working electric" on some sites, indicating this is an area of ongoing focus for the new management.
- Bathrooms and Showers: The positive review explicitly states that "bathrooms and showers were clean." This is a crucial service for any campground, providing essential hygiene facilities for all guests.
- Swimming Pool: The positive review confirms that "the pool water was clear and blue." This indicates that the pool is open and maintained, offering a key recreational amenity, especially during warmer months.
- Grounds Maintenance: "Lawns are mowed and cared for," according to the positive review. This points to active efforts by the new management to maintain the overall appearance and tidiness of the campground.
- On-site Management/Staff (Improving Availability): While a previous negative review highlighted issues with staff being "rarely if ever available," the positive review under "new management" suggests a concerted effort to improve staff presence and responsiveness. This is critical for guest support, check-ins, and problem resolution.
It is important for prospective campers to note that, as a campground under active improvement, it's advisable to call ahead for the most current information on site availability, specific hookup details for your chosen site type, and to confirm the operational status of all facilities. The new management's focus on visible improvements indicates a commitment to delivering a better experience.
Hidden Acres Family Campground, particularly under its new management, is focusing on highlighting several key features designed to enhance the camper's experience and provide a welcoming environment. While some aspects are still "a ways to go," the trajectory of improvements is a significant highlight:
- New Management and Ongoing Improvements: This is perhaps the most significant highlight. The campground is actively "doing a lot of improvements." This indicates a forward-looking approach and a commitment to addressing past issues, such as cleanliness and maintenance, to create a better experience for guests.
- Clean and Well-Maintained Facilities: The positive review specifically praises the cleanliness of the "pool water," "bathrooms and showers," and the care given to the "lawns." These fundamental aspects are crucial for a comfortable camping stay and reflect the immediate impact of the new management.
- Welcoming and Accommodating Atmosphere: A standout feature mentioned in the positive review is how the campground "made me feel welcome" and "accommodated my needs and requests." This focus on guest satisfaction and responsiveness is invaluable for creating a positive camping experience.
- Natural Setting: While not explicitly detailed, the name "Hidden Acres" and its location in rural Milford suggest a natural, potentially wooded environment, offering a peaceful backdrop for camping away from urban noise.
- Family-Friendly Potential: As a "Family Campground," the presence of a pool and the general atmosphere being cultivated under new management point towards a focus on providing a suitable environment for families to enjoy outdoor recreation together.
- Proximity to Major Roadways: Located on Richmond Turnpike (US-301), the campground offers easy access for travelers, making it a convenient stop for those exploring Virginia.
These features, especially the dedication to improvement and positive customer interaction under new management, position Hidden Acres Family Campground as a promising option for those seeking an evolving and potentially excellent camping experience in Virginia.

Common types of promotions or considerations that campgrounds might offer, and which prospective campers could inquire about, include:
- Introductory Rates for New Management: To encourage visitation and showcase improvements, new management sometimes offers introductory discounts or special rates.

- Membership Discounts: While not mentioned, some campgrounds are part of wider networks (like Good Sam Club or Passport America) that offer member discounts. It's worth asking if they participate in any such programs.

Customer Reviews
There are few options in this area but beware of Hidden Acres Campground in Bowling Green. The staff is rarely if ever available. They do not answer the phone, the voicemail box is full so you can’t leave a message, and the office is rarely open. If you do manage to get in the office you will be bombarded with cat pee smells from the unchanged litter box. Most of the sites do not have working electric and the staff cannot figure out the reservation system and often double book sites leaving someone with no where else to go.
I stayed here for 3 days between dog shows. I left a well known campground, not the right fit. Hidden Acres took me in, accommodated my needs and requests and made me feel welcome. It is under new management and doing a lot of improvements. They have a ways to go but the pool water was clear and blue, bathrooms and showers were clean. Lawns are mowed and cared for.
We stayed for a month and we enjoyed our stay. Some spaces are a bit tight, we didn’t have much sitting room outside the RV, the bathhouse was always clean and we enjoyed our walks around the lake. That being said, there are several small improvements that they are just neglecting to do, (ie getting the nasty boats out of the water, fixing up the main shop floors, fixing the laundry room up)
I've stayed here with friends and I can say very clearly. STAY AWAY! MIKE, the son of the owner is a total creep, he tried several times to corner me and kiss me. Not anywhere I'd want my family to stay. Just a warning to be careful..he lurks around constantly.
By far one of the nicest campgrounds that we have ever stayed at. We lodged at on of the cabins located on the pond and it was absolutely beautiful. Very warm and cozy and the owner was very accommodating. Upon arrival we realized that we did not pack pillows or sleeping bags and they went out of their way to furnish us everything we needed. The campground made such an impression we are considering a weekend retreat every fall here. Absolutely breathtaking with the foliage turning and a cup of coffee on the front porch in the morning.
