Introduction / Overview
For New York residents seeking a genuine escape into nature without sacrificing a welcoming, well-managed environment, the Catskill Mountains have long been the premier destination. Nestled deep within this majestic range, near the charming hamlet of Phoenicia, lies a true local gem: Hide-A-Way Campsite. As its name suggests, this destination offers a secluded, tranquil alternative to the often-crowded state parks, providing a peaceful base for exploring the wild beauty of Ulster County.
Hide-A-Way Campsite is primarily a rustic, family-run operation focused on delivering an authentic outdoor experience. It caters predominantly to tent campers, offering spacious sites in a large, open grassy field, where every camper has ample room to breathe. This particular quality—the dedication to space, peace, and personal attention—is frequently highlighted by local users who appreciate the contrast to the often densely packed sites found elsewhere. It is a place where the sound of the wind through the surrounding mountains replaces the clamor of a busy city.
Visitors consistently note the exceptional hospitality offered by the owners, often mentioning "Ed" and his commitment to ensuring guests are settled in comfortably, even in last-minute situations. This level of personalized, friendly service distinguishes Hide-A-Way Campsite, turning a simple overnight stay into a genuinely memorable experience. If you are a New Yorker looking to disconnect and recharge in a campsite that truly feels cared for, Hide-A-Way is a strong contender for your next Catskills adventure. It’s an ideal spot for those who value quiet evenings, clean facilities, and owners who take pride in their property and their guests' well-being.
Location and Accessibility
The Hide-A-Way Campsite boasts a deep, yet accessible, location at 900 Woodland Valley Rd, Phoenicia, NY 12464, USA. This address places it squarely in the heart of the Catskill Park’s most spectacular scenery, specifically in the Woodland Valley, an area famed for its proximity to some of the highest peaks in the region. While it is noted by campers that the drive "is a bit of a drive out to it," this is precisely what grants the site its coveted "hide-a-way" atmosphere and ensures a genuine sense of escape.
To reach the campground, visitors travel along scenic New York Route 28, a major artery connecting the Catskills to the greater Hudson Valley and Capital Region. The hamlet of Phoenicia is a short, approximately ten-minute drive from the main road, offering a small, eclectic downtown area with local restaurants, shops, and outfitters. The campsite is a bit further along Woodland Valley Road, past other regional points of interest, bringing you deeper into the protected wilderness.
This prime location makes Hide-A-Way Campsite a perfect basecamp for hikers, anglers, and nature enthusiasts. It is exceptionally close to the well-known Woodland Valley Campground and the trailheads leading to the Burroughs Range, including Slide Mountain—the highest peak in the Catskills. For New York City and downstate residents, the drive is manageable, typically around two to three hours, making it an ideal choice for a long weekend retreat from the metropolitan rush. The secluded nature of the address means a quieter experience, a necessary trade-off for the slightly longer drive from major highways.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For New Yorkers, Hide-A-Way Campsite is more than just a place to pitch a tent—it’s an antidote to the stresses of modern life. It’s suitable for locals for several compelling reasons, all centered around value, authenticity, and location. Firstly, its position deep within the Catskills makes it a convenient weekend escape from downstate areas, offering a high-density nature experience without the excessive travel time required to reach more distant locations like the Adirondacks.
Secondly, the campground delivers a high-quality, quiet camping experience. Many New Yorkers prioritize peace and seclusion when escaping the city, and the spacious, well-maintained grassy field provides exactly that. The friendly, hands-on management, highlighted by reviewers, adds a layer of comfort and reliability that is particularly reassuring for families and newer campers. Knowing that an owner like Ed is on-site and willing to help turn a potential logistical problem into a positive memory is invaluable.
Finally, its value as an accessible gateway to the premier hiking and outdoor activities of the Catskill Forest Preserve solidifies its standing as a top local choice. For those who love the Catskills but often encounter fully booked state parks, Hide-A-Way Campsite offers a welcoming, well-run, and highly recommended alternative. For a truly peaceful, genuinely rustic, and reliably friendly camping experience in the heart of the mountains, Hide-A-Way Campsite is an excellent choice for any New York resident looking to reconnect with the great outdoors.

Ed really saved the day! We showed up to Woodland Valley Campground a little too late and were turned away, but thankfully we found Hide-a-Way Camp down the road. Ed, the owner, was super friendly and generous—he drove us up to our site and made sure we were settled in comfortably. The site itself was excellent: spacious, clean, and peaceful. It came with a picnic table, a solid fire ring, and the toilet was surprisingly clean for a rustic setup. You can tell Ed cares about the place and the people who stay there. Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for a quiet, well-kept campsite—and especially if you need a last-minute rescue like we did! Next time we might just skip the state park campsite altogether and settle in there for the weekend!
Jul 22, 2025 · NikoWe had a great time at this campground! The tent camping is in a large grass field where everyone has their own space with tables, a fire pit, and a water source. The owners were so kind and showed us directly to our campsite. Its a bit of a drive out to it, but I would stay there again!
