Introduction / Overview
For New York residents seeking the quintessential Catskills escape without sacrificing the convenience of nearby amenities, Phoenicia Black Bear Campground offers a unique and highly favored solution. Located directly on the banks of the beautiful Esopus Creek, this spot is celebrated for striking a "perfect balance of community and solitude." It’s an easy-going, low-key campground that has garnered a loyal following, often described as a "happy place" and a great spot to "actually enjoy nature."
The true heart of the campground lies in its welcoming atmosphere and the dedication of its management, notably the owner, George, who is consistently praised as one of the nicest people visitors have met. This personal touch fosters a respectful community where campers, drawn to the fresh air and natural beauty, are generally "chill, respectful," and mindful of their neighbors' peace. Phoenicia Black Bear is not a high-end resort; it's a place to earn genuine experience in the Catskills, offering both wooded and highly desirable creek-front sites for tents and RVs. It appeals to those who appreciate a place "clearly cared for with heart" and who prioritize a peaceful, nature-centric retreat over loud, disruptive gatherings.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Phoenicia Black Bear Campground is ideally suited for New York locals because it offers the ultimate 'quick escape' from the city that feels worlds away. The accessibility—both by car and public transport to the area—combined with the direct walk to the charming village of Phoenicia eliminates many of the common inconveniences of wilderness camping. For New Yorkers who crave nature but appreciate having hot showers, clean facilities, and a local deli within reach, this campground is a perfect fit.
More importantly, the established culture of the campground, driven by the warm and welcoming owner, attracts a community of respectful campers who are there to enjoy the quiet beauty of the Catskills. It’s an authentic, budget-conscious choice for those looking to disconnect, fish the Esopus Creek, tackle the local trails, and enjoy the "air quality and food quality" that draw visitors back "over and over every weekend." This camp is less about a place and more about an experience—one that promises relaxation and the chance to truly lose yourself in the mountains, a refreshing and necessary break for any New Yorker.

This is hands-down the best campsite in Phoenicia. As a barber who dreams of one day moving out here, I have to say—the owner is literally living my dream life. This land is beautiful, peaceful, and clearly cared for with heart. The campsites do have neighboring campers, but the tree coverage makes it feel private, and most campers are chill, respectful, and seem to understand that “camping” doesn’t mean “shouting into the void at 1am.” It’s the perfect balance of community and solitude. To the crew who left 1-star reviews… if you’re looking for a place to scream across sites, blast music, and treat the woods like your personal frat party, maybe stick to tailgates. The rest of us come here to actually enjoy nature—and each other’s peace. This place is special. If you don’t get it… that’s fine. It’s better without ya. 🙃
Jul 28, 2025 · Alexandra HarttThis is awesome place to earn experience in Catskills. Super friendly easy going management. Me and my girlfriend get addicted to the air quality, food quality, low key accomodations. We are coming over and over every weekend. George the owner of the place is one of the nicest person I've met. Highly recommend that place. Warning ⚠️ you may lost yourself in the mountains and like it!!!!! LOL...... I'll see you all there....
Aug 16, 2025 · Marcus AureliusWe come every year with our family and friends. Our daughters are now 3 and 5, and this by far is one of their favorite things we do every summer. It’s a great escape and time to unplug. We can play and relax in the river. The bathrooms are super close, maintained nice and clean. The town is right outside the campground where you can go grab ice cream, snacks, a nice diner and some cute shops. Many people go tubing down the river. It’s just perfect. We always look forward to coming. George the owner is a very cool guy. Your family will make wonderful memories here!
Aug 17, 2025 · Sareena Merino-JimenezOwners are fantastic. I was a new camper owner last year and learned everything from either George or the other folks in the area. Everyone is friendly, it’s always clean. Right off the Esopus river, you can spend a whole day just taking in the scenery. Quick walk to the local grocery store, restaurant and liquor store if you forgot anything don’t fret!! Nearby is Woodstock brewery and the famous Phoenicia diner. Less than an hour from Kingston and Woodstock if you want to take a day trip and Mt. Tremper is a moderate challenge 2 hours to the top. I came up once and pretty much it has been my destination every time since.
May 31, 2025 · Daniel ThaterWe really enjoyed camping at this place — it was clean, well-maintained, and had a great view. The staff was friendly, and I’ll definitely come back again. I’m giving it 5 stars, but the only downside was that the men’s restrooms didn’t have locks on the doors — in fact, there were no locks at all.
