Hurricane Creek Recreation About

For those in Kentucky yearning for a serene escape into nature, Hurricane Creek Recreation, nestled along the eastern shoreline of beautiful Lake Barkley, offers an idyllic setting. As a highly-regarded Corps of Engineers (COE) park, it provides a well-maintained and peaceful environment for campers seeking to reconnect with the outdoors. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway with your RV, looking to pitch a tent under the stars, or simply want to enjoy the tranquility of a lakeside retreat, Hurricane Creek Recreation provides an inviting and well-equipped base for your adventures in Western Kentucky. Its commitment to maintaining a high-quality camping experience makes it a hidden gem for local outdoor enthusiasts.

Hurricane Creek Recreation is conveniently situated at Hurricane Camp Rd, Cadiz, KY 42211, USA. Its prime location places it directly on Lake Barkley, a vast 58,000-acre reservoir renowned for its fishing, boating, and scenic beauty. The campground is also just a short drive from the famed Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, offering even more opportunities for exploration and wildlife viewing. Access to Hurricane Creek Recreation is generally straightforward, with main roads leading to the park being recently paved and well-maintained, ensuring a smooth journey for all types of vehicles and RVs. While it offers a secluded feel, it’s still within a reasonable driving distance to nearby towns like Cadiz, allowing for easy access to supplies if needed, though visitors might find local amenities are few and not immediately adjacent to the campground. Some previous visitors have noted that cell service for certain carriers, like T-Mobile, can be limited within the campground, so it's wise to plan accordingly if staying connected is a priority.

Hurricane Creek Recreation offers a comprehensive range of services and amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience:

  • Spacious Campsites: The campground features 51 sites suitable for tent, trailer, and RV camping, with some accommodating equipment up to 40 feet in length. Sites are often described as large and level.
  • Full Hookups: Many sites are equipped with electric hookups (30 and 50 amp service) and water connections right at each site, a notable feature for a COE park. Some walk-to tent sites may not have hookups.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite includes a sturdy, new picnic table and a fire ring with a grill grate, perfect for outdoor meals and campfires. Some sites also feature a smaller, separate table, possibly for fish cleaning.
  • Well-Maintained Roads: The campground boasts recently paved main roads that are eight inches thick, ensuring smooth access and longevity.
  • Clean Restrooms and Showers: Flush toilets and showers are available in the bathhouses. While some reviews mention them being a bit dated, they are generally found to be clean and well-maintained.
  • Boat Ramp: An on-site boat ramp with parking provides excellent access to Lake Barkley for boating and fishing enthusiasts.
  • Dump Station: A convenient dump station is available for RVs.
  • Laundry Facilities: On-site laundry facilities add to the convenience for longer stays.
  • Playground: A playground area provides entertainment for younger campers.

Beyond its essential services, Hurricane Creek Recreation boasts several key features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as a top Kentucky camping destination:

  • Lake Barkley Access: The campground’s prime location on Lake Barkley provides direct access to one of Kentucky’s largest and most beautiful lakes, offering endless opportunities for water-based recreation.
  • Natural Beauty and Tranquility: Campers frequently praise the scenic lake views and the quiet, peaceful atmosphere, even when the campground is full. The sites are often separated by forested areas, providing a sense of privacy.
  • Updated Facilities: Recent updates, including new wood beams at sites and well-maintained roads, demonstrate a commitment to improving the camper experience.
  • Fishing Opportunities: Lake Barkley is renowned for its fishing, particularly for catfish and trophy bass, making Hurricane Creek a favorite among anglers.
  • Hiking and Wildlife Viewing: The surrounding natural areas offer opportunities for hiking, and visitors often spot local wildlife like white-tailed deer and raccoons.
  • Proximity to Land Between the Lakes: Being just a few miles east of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area opens up access to an even broader range of activities, including the Elk and Bison Prairie, nature centers, and extensive hiking and biking trails.
  • Variety of Sites: The mix of back-in and pull-through sites, many of which are level, caters to different RV and trailer sizes and preferences.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: While not explicitly detailed, campgrounds often have pet policies, and the natural setting is generally welcoming to well-behaved pets on a leash.

As a Corps of Engineers park, Hurricane Creek Recreation typically offers consistent and affordable rates for its campsites. While specific promotional offers might vary by season or national programs, campers can often benefit from general discounts or passes associated with federal recreation areas. For instance, Interagency Senior/Access Recreation Passes commonly provide a 50% discount on single campsites for eligible pass holders. It is always recommended to check the official recreation.gov website for the most up-to-date pricing, reservation policies, and any seasonal promotions that might be available. Given its status as a COE park, it's also worth noting that reservation fees may apply, and some sites might be reservable, while others operate on a first-come, first-served basis. For the most accurate information on current offers, contacting the campground directly or visiting their official booking platform is advised.

Nice large level sites. The roads are maintained,🚧 The main road here has just been paved. And it's really nice. And 8 in thick. That's going to last a good while.👍🏻 The sites are updated with new wood beams. Each site has a nice new picnic table as well as a separate smaller table which I'm guessing is for cleaning fish 🤔 This is one of the first COE parks I've been to that has water 💦 on each site. There is a nice mix of back in and pull through sites. All of them have 30 and 50 amp service⚡ There is a cell phone tower right next to this property but it does not have my carrier on it, T-Mobile. I had to drive 15 miles one way each day to get service📶

Hidden gem an easy drive from Nashville. We stayed on site 13, pretty level and long enough for our 30' 5th wheel. Some sites need to be reworked but most are quite nice. Can't wait to go back.

We visited for the first time the weekend of April 30- May 2, stayed at site 23-a perfect site for tying boat off to bank and it's right at your door! Attendant was friendly and helpful. Site is beautiful although a little confusing at first because of the layout. However the view was breathtaking. Ample space between camp sites for privacy and enjoyability. Walked the campground and let kiddos ride bikes. Has an amazing play ground for the kids and is built perfect for ages 2-8. New bath house was nice, clean and well stocked. Fire wood for sale on site- (6 logs for $3) not to mention those lying around the campground where they'd been clearing trees. (Attendant said take what you want for free!) Really enjoyed the stay and will return! *Four stars instead of five because site said internet coverage but we have zero bars on the entire campground. *We have t-mobile, another camper we met had cricket and she had two bars. *Two miles to nearest Mom & Pop Market store.

A great place to camp. Family friendly located on lake Barkley. The camp host Jake & Jayme are super nice and always very helpful with anything that should come up. They are great in keeping an eye on the park with making multiple rounds checking on things and everyone. I hope to see them next year as well. Sites are always clean when arriving. A super quiet campground come sundown. We notice the sheriff of the county also makes rounds once or twice a day circling thru which is added peace of mind. A boat ramp for launching your boat and areas to fish from the bank. A play ground as well. Nice bathhouse with two toilets two sinks two or three showers situated in the center of the campground. More sites than not have lake view. There is a swimming beach and also tent sites as well.

Currently on a cross-country road trip and this has been the best good-value campsite I have stayed at, so far. The campsites are nice and large with 4 electrical outlets, plus there are hot showers. I highly recommend the walk-in campsites since the walk isn’t too far and the amenities are great, plus there’s a beach for swimming and a boat ramp. The restrooms also have soap!
