As a local New Hampshire resident, you already know that the best getaways don't require leaving the state—they just require diving deeper into our own incredible backyard. When the mountains call, and you're craving that perfect blend of rugged nature and essential comfort, look no further than Jigger Johnson Campground. Nestled right in the heart of the legendary White Mountain National Forest, this spot is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s an authentic slice of New England wilderness perfectly suited for a relaxing mini-vacation.
Named after the famed local woods boss from the region’s colorful logging era, Jigger Johnson Campground offers a classic, welcoming atmosphere. It provides a peaceful, beautiful, and clean environment, making it a perfect retreat for locals looking to unwind without a long-distance drive. Whether you're a seasoned camper or just dipping your toes into the great outdoors, Jigger Johnson delivers a high-quality, memorable experience right here in New Hampshire.
Location and Accessibility
Jigger Johnson Campground boasts an incredibly central and accessible location for anyone in the New Hampshire area. It is situated directly on the world-famous Kancamagus Scenic Byway (NH Route 112) in Albany, a truly spectacular 34.5-mile scenic drive. This placement makes it a prime base for exploring the region.
The campground is positioned near the eastern end of the 'Kanc,' roughly 12 to 18 miles west of Conway, which is a convenient hub for shopping, dining, and finding any last-minute supplies you might need. Being centrally located means you are within easy striking distance of countless trailheads, waterfalls, and attractions like the Russell-Colbath Historic Site.
The access roads and trails around the campground are noted by visitors for being immaculate, contributing to the overall pleasant experience from the moment you arrive. While it offers a feeling of true remoteness, its location on a paved highway ensures a straightforward trip. However, be advised that the deeply wooded setting means that cell service and Wi-Fi connectivity are often unavailable or minimal, providing the perfect excuse for a digital detox!
Services Offered
Jigger Johnson Campground provides a variety of essential, well-maintained services that enhance the rustic camping experience. Focusing on cleanliness and basic amenities allows campers to truly relax and focus on nature.
Important note regarding soap: While the restrooms are kept clean, customer reviews consistently recommend bringing your own hand soap, as supplies can sometimes be minimal or absent, ensuring your comfort and sanitation during your stay.
Features / Highlights
What truly sets Jigger Johnson apart is its surrounding environment and unique recreational opportunities, which local users consistently praise.
Contact Information
Jigger Johnson Campground is managed by the U.S. Forest Service (or an authorized concessionaire). Since it operates on a mostly first-come, first-served basis, especially for most of its sites, and does not have a central reception desk like a private resort, direct contact is best handled through the official National Forest channels or by checking current conditions.
Address: Albany, NH 03818, USA
Given the zero-to-minimal cell service at the campground itself, any phone number would be for a distant office (like the Saco Ranger Station). Your best bet is to plan ahead, arrive early, and ensure you have all necessary supplies (cash/check for the self-pay system, quarters for showers, and hand soap) before heading in.
Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
For New Hampshire residents, Jigger Johnson Campground offers an ideal, reliable, and convenient escape. We all know the value of time, and this campground allows you to maximize your getaway minutes by offering an easily accessible location right off one of our state's most scenic roads. There’s no need to travel far to find a truly relaxing and beautiful spot.
The campground perfectly embodies the essence of a White Mountains experience: towering trees, the soothing sound of the Swift River, and immediate access to exceptional hiking and recreation. Customer reviews confirm that it is a 'perfect, relaxing, beautiful, quiet, clean place' and a great spot to simply unwind. Whether you're looking to spend six nights immersed in nature or just a quick weekend to recharge, Jigger Johnson Campground is a local treasure that delivers a high-quality, authentic, and memorable New Hampshire camping experience year after year.
Camped here for the last 6 nights and it was great! We paid for an extra night through labor day so we could pack up and leave around 4pm. The roads and trails around the campground are immaculate and the bathrooms are well cleaned and plenty of tp, just bring your own soap
Sep 01, 2025 · Matthew BirdNeeded a mini vacation, this place was a perfect , relaxing, beautiful, quiet, clean place! Great place to unwind. Bathrooms are clean but there is very little to no soap in the bathroom. In the bathroom with the handicapped stall there was a bottle with very little water filled soap. I think you’re supposed to bring your own. So for people coming here, I recommend bringing your own hand soap. I am disabled and wanted to let people know for those who need a handicapped bathroom stall this place has one, big and clean. Jigger Johnson’s has its own private access to the swift river, my brother and I had lots of fun relaxing, swimming and tubing!
Jul 16, 2025 · Gabrielle McInnisCamped with a small RV in the 3rd week of June. Plenty of site availability. Spacious and level everywhere. Nested under the trees. We are self contained so didn’t use the facilities. Bugs were not too bad - a little sparky and they stayed away. No dump station here and, our only gripe, had to be creative to add water to our rig since the water stations are not threaded for hose connectors. Camp host was pleasant and accommodating. Short walk to the sandy banks of the Swift River.
Jun 20, 2025 · Tim HarringtonI’ve been coming here since 1994 as a toddler and just about every summer since. Never had an issue with camp hosts. Have never been confronted or told to put out a fire past a certain time. Have never been confronted about payment either. Neighbors are usually respectful and I personally have never had an issue. The bathrooms are clean with running water and the sites for the most part are kept up with as well. The sites do have a decent amount of privacy although I do feel as the years have gone on there’s been a good amount of thinning of the trees between sites and they have become more open which is disappointing but do understand that sometimes it has to be done. Overall I enjoy this campground and will continue to keep coming back with family. We have a trip planned for later this month and we are all very excited to come back!
Aug 01, 2024 · APWe stayed here before when Barbara was the host and loved it. We were almost deterred to not come back during our recent trip because of the recent poor reviews, but figured we’d see for ourselves. We had a very pleasant time! No issues with rules being super strictly enforced as mentioned in some reviews. Quiet hours from 10pm to 6am which people followed at least in our area. We didn’t see the host besides when we had arrived at the campsite our first day, and Nat was very friendly and helpful. The restrooms (with flush toilets) were clean and had a lot of toilet paper in each stall, just bring your own soap to wash your hands. No running showers at the moment (late July 2024) due to the showers being worked on. The site is dog-friendly, and we dogsat for a friend. Check out is at noon. Would happily come back.
