Introduction / Overview: Your Historic and Rustic Retreat in the White Mountains
Located along New Hampshire’s legendary Kancamagus Highway (Route 112), Blackberry Crossing Campground is a cherished destination for local campers who prioritize a rustic, historic, and authentic White Mountain experience. This U.S. Forest Service site, nestled just minutes west of Conway, is unique among the campgrounds on "the Kanc" as it was once a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp during the 1930s. This history adds a layer of depth to your stay, with remnants of the old camp—such as foundations and chimneys—still visible, allowing for a fascinating, self-guided exploration into New Hampshire's past.
Blackberry Crossing embraces the traditional, less-developed style of National Forest camping. With approximately 26 sites available exclusively on a first-come, first-served basis, it appeals to the spontaneous local adventurer and those who have missed reservations at the more bookable campgrounds. The setting is beautiful, offering ample shade from large trees and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a true retreat from daily life. While it is known for its primitive amenities, it is also highly valued for its location, providing easy access to the famous Swift River and the countless recreational opportunities of the White Mountain National Forest. For those who understand and appreciate the simple, unhooked-up camping lifestyle, Blackberry Crossing remains a high-value, sought-after location.
Location and Accessibility: Easily Reached on the Eastern Kancamagus
Blackberry Crossing Campground enjoys a convenient yet deeply wooded location in the Saco Ranger District of the White Mountain National Forest.
Address: Kancamagus Hwy, Conway, NH 03818, USA
The campground is situated directly off the Kancamagus Highway, a National Scenic Byway known for its stunning beauty. Its position on the eastern end of the Kanc, roughly 10 minutes west of Conway, makes it one of the most accessible starting points for local campers coming from the state's eastern and southern regions.
Access is straightforward from Route 112. Unlike some neighboring campgrounds, there are no bridge height restrictions to worry about for RV access. However, campers should be prepared for gravel parking aprons at the individual sites. This campground is particularly valued by tent campers, as it offers a dedicated field area towards the back with several tent sites that are often available, even when other sites in the region are fully booked—making it a perfect "last resort" option for local users on a busy weekend. Its close proximity to Conway means quick trips for supplies, but once you enter the site, you are immediately enveloped in the forest's quietude.

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
Blackberry Crossing Campground holds a special place in the hearts of New Hampshire outdoor enthusiasts. It embodies the core values of local, rustic camping: the freedom of a first-come, first-served policy, a deep connection to the environment, and historical significance. For locals, this campground is a reliable option that avoids the hassle of booking months in advance, making spontaneous weekend trips possible.
While recent reviews have highlighted the need for increased maintenance in some areas, the core appeal remains intact: large, private, shaded sites nestled within a national forest landmark. It offers an unparalleled base for exploring the famous Kancamagus corridor, whether for a cool dip in the Swift River or an arduous hike up a Presidential Range peak. New Hampshire residents know that true value lies in the experience, not the flush toilets. Blackberry Crossing delivers a challenging, rewarding, and historically rich camping experience that is fundamental to enjoying the wild heart of the Granite State, serving as a dependable refuge right on one of the state's most iconic scenic drives.

this used to be a 5 stars to me even with no services but since pro sport left and Vista came in the campsites on the kangamagus are in bad shape...trees are coming down and not being taken care of toilets need emptied always running out of toilet paper the forestry really needs to do something about this. the white mountains are beautiful but they are in need of some must needed care
Jul 24, 2024 · Kim WalterPretty good campground, if all the other campgrounds on the Kanc are booked up you can usually use this one as a last resort, they have a field towards the back with about 6 tent sites that are typically always free.
Aug 25, 2024 · Danylo ChernomoretsI have been camping my entire life. We used to only stay at the Covered Bridge but as that campground became more reserved vs. first come it got to hard to find a site. We moved over to Blackberry and so glad we did. The campground is small but full of history. The host are ALWAYS so kind. Truly a wonderful campground to relax, enjoy family, and nature.
Jul 24, 2022 · Stephanie BrownClean campground located along the Kancamagus Hwy / Rte 112 in Albany/Conway. NH. Hosts were wonderful and friendly. Water and toilet facilities available; not on each site. No showers, but can use campground's up the road that is also part of the National Forest camping. Firewood available for purchase. Wood/fire pits with steel grates for cooking on each site. Dumpster available for trash. Thanks for the hospitality. Hope to return soon.
Jul 16, 2020 · Tracey AnnQuiet. Decent space between sites. Very very peaceful. This is one of my family's all time favorite places to camp when in New Hampshire!! An old CCC camp, plaques of historical info and old foundations give this place some interesting character too!
