Kabetogama, MN 56669, USA
Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota's dedicated outdoor enthusiasts, the ultimate camping trip involves trading the highway for the open water, a true immersion into the Northwoods. Maple Point Island Campsite (K21) offers precisely this authentic experience. Located on the islands of Kabetogama Lake within the spectacular watery domain of Voyageurs National Park (VNP), this site is a prime destination for those seeking a secluded, boat-in tent camping adventure.
Designated as a Small Campsite in the park’s frontcountry, K21 is reserved for a maximum of nine people, ensuring a quiet, low-impact stay that is deeply appreciated by local users. It’s an island retreat where the sights and sounds of civilization are replaced by the calls of loons and the movement of local wildlife. It is a coveted location that epitomizes the wilderness camping experience unique to VNP.
The setting of Maple Point Island is nothing short of breathtaking, offering spectacular views across the lake. Customers frequently highlight the abundance of natural activity, with one noting the joy of watching "lots of birds and wildlife." The journey to the island is part of the appeal, described by a previous camper as a "fun paddle," though they rightly caution that the exposed nature of Kabetogama Lake makes it "definitely not for beginners" when paddling smaller craft like canoes or kayaks. Preparation is key, as the site operates on a strict 'pack it in, pack it out' policy—a standard measure that helps maintain the pristine quality of this island gem.
Maple Point Island (K21) is a protected part of a US National Park, meaning its facilities are minimal but well-maintained, designed to furnish essential needs while preserving the environment. Reservations are mandatory and are required well in advance to secure this sought-after piece of Minnesota's natural paradise.
Location and Accessibility
Maple Point Island Campsite (K21) is situated on Kabetogama Lake in the northern reaches of Minnesota, a region defined by the vast, interconnected waterways of Voyageurs National Park. The official, general location is within the Kabetogama, MN 56669 area. As an island campsite, K21's accessibility is exclusively 'Boat-In'. There is no road access, car parking, or trailhead leading directly to the campsite.
The site is approximately 4.5 miles of boat travel from the Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center, which serves as the primary access point and boat launch for this part of the park. Campers must transport all gear, tents, and supplies by watercraft. The shoreline landing at Maple Point is identified as a 'Sand Access' landing, which differs from sites that may offer a dock or rock landing. This sand access is ideal for beaching canoes, kayaks, and smaller motorboats, though large vessels may require careful mooring.
Paddlers should heed the advice of local users: Kabetogama is a large body of water that can become choppy with little warning. Paddling to K21 is a rewarding venture but requires intermediate to advanced paddling skills and careful attention to weather forecasts. For those with motorboats, the approach is straightforward from the public launches near the mainland visitor centers. The remote, island location guarantees an unmatched sense of escape and tranquility once you arrive.

Beautiful island. Fun paddle put there but definitely not for beginners. Lots of birds and wildlife to watch. The ground on the pad sites is incredibly firm, so I'd recommend a sleeping pad of some kind. No dumpster, pack it in, pack it out.
