Missouri State Fair Campground About

For many Missourians, the idea of camping brings to mind serene lakeshores, quiet forests, or picturesque trails. But have you considered a truly unique and conveniently located option right in the heart of our state? The Missouri State Fair Campground, situated in Sedalia, offers a distinct camping experience that blends accessibility with practical amenities, making it a viable choice for a variety of local travelers. Whether you’re planning to attend one of the many events at the historic Missouri State Fairgrounds, embarking on a cycling adventure along the Katy Trail, or simply seeking an affordable and convenient place to stay in Central Missouri, this campground provides a functional and often lively atmosphere.

The Missouri State Fair Campground is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch your tent; it's a gateway to experiencing Sedalia and the surrounding region. It operates year-round, accommodating different types of camping units, including tents, throughout the seasons. While its busiest periods are undeniably during the annual Missouri State Fair and other large events, the campground also offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere during off-peak times. This flexibility makes it a versatile destination for everyone from solo travelers to families. Its design, largely as an open, grassy area, means that while shade might be at a premium, it provides ample space and a sense of openness. It's important for prospective campers to understand that the experience can vary significantly based on event schedules; during the fair, the campground transforms into a bustling hub of activity, with sites often filled to capacity and a vibrant, albeit sometimes crowded, environment. However, this also means you're right in the thick of the action, which can be an exciting draw for many.

The Missouri State Fair Campground boasts an excellent location at 2503 W 16th St, Sedalia, MO 65301, USA. This address places it directly on the grounds of the famed Missouri State Fair, offering unparalleled access to fair events and facilities. Its position within Sedalia means easy access to major roadways, including US-50 and US-65, making it a straightforward drive from various points across Missouri. For those venturing from Kansas City or St. Louis, the drive is manageable, positioning it as a convenient weekend escape or a strategic stop on a longer journey through the state.

Beyond the fairgrounds themselves, the campground’s location provides access to several Sedalia attractions. The popular Katy Trail, a fantastic resource for cyclists and hikers, runs directly through the fairgrounds area, providing a seamless transition from your campsite to scenic outdoor exploration. Sedalia also offers historical sites like the Katy Depot Welcome Center, cultural institutions such as the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, and the majestic Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site. Plus, for everyday conveniences, grocery stores and other essential services are just a short drive away, ensuring you have everything you need for a comfortable stay.

The campground’s 24-hour operation is a significant convenience, allowing for flexible arrival times day or night. While during the off-season, sites are typically first-come, first-served with no reservations, the peak season, particularly during the Missouri State Fair, has different procedures and rates. It's always a good idea to consult the Missouri State Fairgrounds website or call ahead for the most current information, especially if your visit coincides with a major event.

While the Missouri State Fair Campground does not typically offer direct promotional discounts on its camping rates, Missouri State Parks does provide a Customer Rewards Program. While the campground is part of the State Fair, which operates somewhat independently, it's worth inquiring if stays at the Missouri State Fair Campground contribute to this program. The Customer Rewards Program allows you to earn points on various state park-related purchases, including overnight camping stays at participating locations, which can then be redeemed for discounts on future visits. For specific deals or lower rates, consider camping during the off-season when demand is lower. During the Missouri State Fair itself, camping is in high demand, and it's best to secure your spot well in advance through the fair's dedicated website for fair-time camping.

Great variety of things to see around Missouri’s agriculture industry. Fairgrounds needs more benches. More coffee kiosks selling good coffee drinks are needed.

Camp ground was full the first day of the fair. Camp sites were irregular and campers weirdly parked blocking other sites. Power and sewer were nice. Bathrooms had toilet paper and were cleaned mostly. But the paint was old and moldy. Other than mass golf cart traffic the noise level was mild. The dust was coated and not terrible. There was a storm one night and the announcements were efficient and storm shelters open for safety. I enjoy camping at the fair. I wanted to give a real review.

Camping at the MO State Fair is a joke! Campers call the camping process the Black Hole where you may wait up to 12 hours to be registered for a site. The campground is part of the Mo State Park system. HOWEVER, out of 41 Mo State Parks who have camping, you CAN NOT make online camping reservations for the State Fair Campground. Mostly you have to rely on the Good Old Boy system to give you an annual reservation or hope the hateful people at the gate will take pity on you after you have driven from the far corners of the state with stock to be shown or a vendor who has rented an expensive booth only to be turned away give you a site. NO FIRE HAZARDS HERE!
