Mohican Wilderness About

For Ohio residents, the call of the wild and the desire for outdoor adventure often lead to the renowned Mohican region. Nestled within this scenic expanse is Mohican Wilderness, a campground and recreational hub that promises a vibrant and activity-filled escape for families, groups, and individuals alike. Far from just a place to pitch a tent, Mohican Wilderness positions itself as a comprehensive outdoor destination, offering a plethora of activities designed to keep every member of the family engaged and entertained.

The Mohican area is famously known as the "Canoe Capital of Ohio," with the Mohican River offering endless opportunities for water-based fun. Mohican Wilderness capitalizes on this, providing direct access to the river for tubing, kayaking, and rafting adventures. As one delighted visitor noted, taking their "own tubes along and the kids said it was their favorite part," highlighting the seamless integration of river activities into the camping experience.

Beyond the river, Mohican Wilderness is recognized for its diverse on-site amenities and recreational offerings. Reviews frequently praise the array of activities available, including "putt-putt, hay rides, a play ground, and shooting range." This breadth of options ensures that whether you're looking for active pursuits or more relaxed entertainment, there's something for everyone. This variety also contributes to the feeling that it's "worth the price," providing excellent value for a family getaway.

One of the distinctive advantages of Mohican Wilderness, as pointed out by seasoned campers, is its strategic location as "the last campground before Greer." This placement helps visitors avoid "the crazy drunk crowds along the busier parts of the river," offering a more tranquil and family-friendly atmosphere. While the area embraces its rustic charm, it also strives to provide essential facilities for a comfortable stay, including various camping options from primitive sites to those with electric and water hookups, and even cabin rentals.

It's important to note that a rustic setting often comes with certain characteristics, such as limited cell phone service, which can be seen as either a "downfall" or a welcome opportunity to "disconnect to reconnect with nature," depending on personal preference. This article will provide a detailed look at Mohican Wilderness, exploring its unique location, the wide range of services and features it offers, and why it is a compelling choice for Ohio locals seeking an active and memorable outdoor adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Mohican Wilderness is ideally situated at 22462 Wally Rd, Glenmont, OH 44628, USA. This address places it firmly within the renowned Mohican State Park and Mohican-Memorial State Forest region, a jewel in Ohio's natural crown. Glenmont is a small community in Holmes County, known for its picturesque rural landscapes, dense woodlands, and proximity to the scenic Mohican River.

The campground's location on Wally Road is particularly significant. Wally Road is famous for winding alongside the Mohican River, offering scenic drives and easy access to various canoe liveries and outdoor activity centers. For Ohio locals, Mohican Wilderness is readily accessible from across the state. While it offers a sense of being "away from it all," it is within a reasonable driving distance from major urban centers. Cleveland is approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive north, and Columbus is about a 2-hour drive south. Major routes like US Route 30 and State Route 3 provide connections to the region, making it a feasible destination for weekend trips or extended vacations.

A key highlight of its location is being "the last campground before Greer," implying it's situated in a less congested stretch of the river, which can appeal to those seeking a more peaceful river experience compared to the busier upper sections. However, visitors should be aware that "the main road runs down the west side of the Narrows, which can get a bit loud with motorcycles and trucks," as noted in a review. This is a common characteristic of popular river valley destinations.

Beyond the campground, the Mohican region is an outdoor paradise. Mohican State Park and State Forest offer extensive hiking and mountain biking trails, stunning gorges, and iconic features like the Clear Fork Gorge scenic overlook and the famous swinging bridge. The nearby town of Loudonville, often referred to as the "Canoe Capital," provides additional amenities, shops, and dining options. This rich tapestry of natural beauty and recreational opportunities surrounding Mohican Wilderness enhances its appeal as a comprehensive outdoor destination for Ohio locals.

Great spot for families. I like that they had putt-putt, hay rides, a play ground, and shooting range. We did all the activities except for horse back riding. I felt it was worth the price. I like that they are the last campground before Greer so you don't get the crazy drunk crowds along the busier parts of the river. We took our own tubes along and the kids said it was their favorite part.

What a great location. We spent the weekend in the north side with a very large group in the Narrows. It was such a great spot and some great spots on the river. The only downfall, the main road runs down the west side of the Narrows, which can get a bit loud with motorcycles and trucks. The showers were okay, but wear water/shower shoes. It is not up to par with some of the state campgrounds like Alum Creek. FYI: there is ZERO cell phone service, and the only way to make a call is to cross the swinging bridge across the river and hike almost ¼ mile up the hill out of the valley to get service. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful location on the river. Huge sites that you can setup your camper however yould like. We rebook every year. Nice distance from 'park and launch' place to float or kayak home.

the late night check in girl that always wears the headband tried to make us move 12 sites away from our group when we had a reservation. it was their fault for messing it up, but she still yelled at us and didn’t apologize once. she also expressed zero concern when my little brother was lost and didn’t let me use the office phone to try and contact him. i’ve never experienced such rude customer service in my life. just a fair warning, you better get checked in before her shift starts because it’ll get real nasty real quick. on a better note, Cody from security needs a raise.

This place is special. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The roads are paved and pothole free. The lots were Huge! The firewood was reasonably priced. The launch ramp for kayaks was well maintained and very usable. The camp store had everything and more if you forgot anything they have it. The prices were normal and reasonable. I loved my stay here and will be back.
