Loved our 3 days here. Clean, quiet, and friendly ranger to orient us. Easy drive into the retreat area for walking paths playground ice cream and fishing. And then 5 minutes from the town and 25 min to Asheville. 25 minutes from Catawba Waterfwall (don’t miss it). Spot #15 for a big group, close to wood and bathrooms Spot 14 secluded by river and close to bathrooms. If you plan to hike or bike their grounds definitely call to inquire what is open and we’ll marked. We had a hard time finding the biking trail.
We love it here! Have been visiting almost every year since I was a kid... and now bringing our kids. The Montreat Family Campground is comprised of 28 tent/small pop-up campsites nestled among the hardwoods, laurels, and rhododendrons that run alongside Graybeard Stream. Sites are available seven days a week from April 30, 2021, through October 31, 2021. Each campsite has a picnic table, fire pit, and grill. Electrical or water hookups are not available at most sites; however, water spigots are close to each campsite and two bath houses provide campers with hot water, showers, toilets, and electrical outlets. Site 5 has full RV hookups: water, electrical and sewer. Sites 11 and 14 have electricity. Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and firearms are prohibited in the Montreat Family Campground. Pets are allowed as long as they are kept quiet and leashed, and you must clean up after them.
Very nice and semiprivate campsites. Primitive to hookups available. Primitive sites could use smaller gravel for beds, bring a yoga mat to put down. Sites are well maintained.
Absolutely beautiful and epic campgrounds! One of the greatest campsites available in WNC, cannot recommend enough! Great facilities, would highly recommend trying to get a site next to the creek as it's the perfect white noise machine. Definitely keep all your food locked up in the car as the black bears, though peaceful, are very active this year...one of their main food sources is acorns and we had a very small amount this year so they are coming off the mountains looking for food.
Sites are uncomfortably close to each other, too small and didn't feel safe as a solo female. They don't check camper identification at check in which made me feel uncomfortable after some odd behavior from the camper at the site next to me. The rangers were very nice and said they thought they had the situation under control. Just didn't feel very safe and it's more of a camp spot in the middle of a subdivision type situation. Not really a true wilderness campground. I chose a campground because I was camping solo but in retrospect I probably would have felt safer and more comfortable off by myself in the national forest.
