Introduction / Overview
For the adventurous Minnesota local, the Mule-Kicker Beach Watercraft Campsite offers a unique, secluded, and quintessentially North Shore wilderness experience. This is not a typical drive-up campground; it is a primitive, designated campsite exclusively for those exploring the vast beauty of Lake Superior by watercraft—kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. Part of the expansive Lake Superior State Water Trail system, this site is a critical stop for paddlers undertaking multi-day expeditions along the craggy, breathtaking Cook County coastline.
The camp's allure lies in its rugged accessibility and its stunning beach location. Unlike the more developed campsites found in nearby State Parks, Mule-Kicker Beach embraces the ethos of low-impact, self-sufficient wilderness travel, echoing the spirit of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, but on the Great Lake. Customer reviews highlight the feeling of having a spectacular stretch of shoreline almost entirely to oneself, making it an ideal escape for Minnesotans seeking quiet contemplation, beach walking, and unobstructed views of the world's largest freshwater lake. It offers a powerful reminder of the raw, untouched natural heritage preserved in the northern reaches of our state.
Location and Accessibility
Mule-Kicker Beach Watercraft Campsite is located along the dramatic shoreline of Lake Superior in East Cook County, Minnesota, in the general vicinity of Grand Marais (East Cook, MN 55604, USA). Specifically, the site is a designated stop on the Lake Superior State Water Trail, a paddling route that runs approximately 150 miles along the North Shore from Duluth to the Canadian border.
Accessibility is strictly by watercraft. The site is not reachable by car, and there is no vehicle parking available directly at the campsite. Paddlers must launch their vessels from one of the public access points or State Park landings further along the coast—making the journey to the site a foundational part of the camping experience. This ensures that the campsite remains remote and tranquil, primarily used by sea kayakers and experienced canoeists who are prepared for the unpredictable conditions of Lake Superior. Due to the exposed nature of the lake, safe navigation and preparedness for sudden weather changes are essential for anyone planning a visit. The experience is tailored for those who embrace the paddle-in challenge to reach a truly unique, undeveloped beach setting.

Conclusion: Why This Place Is Suitable for Locals
Mule-Kicker Beach is a true hidden gem for the adventurous Minnesotan. It represents the ultimate getaway for those who appreciate the physical effort required to earn a pristine campsite. For residents, who are uniquely positioned to understand the grandeur and respect the power of Lake Superior, a trip to this watercraft site is an authentic immersion into the state’s wild heritage. It encourages locals to utilize the State Water Trail and develop their paddling skills to safely explore the rugged North Shore that is so often viewed only from Highway 61. It is a place for solitary reflection, intimate group outings (limited to six paddlers), and the simple, profound joy of falling asleep to the sound of Lake Superior waves. By utilizing this free, primitive resource, Minnesotans actively participate in the tradition of low-impact wilderness stewardship, ensuring this spectacular beach and its empty views remain available for generations of state paddlers to come.
Great spot for walking on the beach and taking inthe beautiful views. Very empty when we were there which gave us time to enjoy it all the more.
