The focus here is on the natural surroundings and the unparalleled access to the New River, making it a perfect base for exploring this iconic waterway and the surrounding Virginia landscape. Let's dive deeper into what makes New River Campground and Canoe a popular choice for local outdoor enthusiasts.
Location and Accessibility
New River Campground and Canoe is strategically located at 3745 New River Pkwy, Independence, VA 24348, USA. This address places it directly on the banks of the New River, a defining feature and primary draw for the campground. The campground’s position offers excellent accessibility for visitors from across Virginia. It's close enough to main roads to be easily reached, yet set far enough along the parkway to provide a genuine "getaway" feel. The convenience of a gas station and a restaurant "right up the road" from the campground adds to its practicality for campers. The riverside location means beautiful views are a given, making it a picturesque spot to set up camp. While there might be some ambient noise from passing trains and trucks, many campers find this to be a minor aspect of the overall experience, especially given the prime river access.

Customer Reviews
The location is pretty, that’s about it. Staff and “security” were pretty rude all around. Quiet hours supposedly start at 11pm but are not enforced, and are even encouraged by staff to ignore. Staff hosted a community karaoke party from 6pm to well past midnight in the middle of the campgrounds. Nothing like trying to sleep in a canvas tent with 10 speakers bumping for hours. Bathrooms were generally clean and kept up well though.
This is a nice old school campground. The sites along the river are beautiful. You do get some train and truck noise from passing traffic, but IMHO opinion, it's not bad. The spots are spacious, and it is easy to back in. The shower is dated but clean, and it has hot water. I've stayed in worse, far worse. The camp host, Mike, is very helpful and friendly. There is a gas station and restaurant right up the road. The reason why I rated this so high is the views of the river and how close you are to New River National Park. Trail Explorer is close, too. You ride old railway tracks on special cars, very cool.
I own a home close to New River Campground. I have been several times now for kayaking trips down the river. The views and local scenery are breathtaking and the trip down the river is beyond relaxing. The level of difficulty depends on the height of the water. The higher the water the faster and stronger the current. But overall you see people of all ages going down the river and enjoying themselves. The staff here is simply wonderful and overly accommodating. Stephanie and Jesse go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at home while on the grounds. We will be back in 2 weeks Thanks for the wonderful memories!
My favorite family campground right on the new!! I love going and look forward to my visits there each year. The owners are great and make you feel right at home, and are always willing to help when you need it. Lots to offer, tubing, canoes, views, a store with necessities, and I feel extremely safe there with my kids. They have a gate with a code and they try hard to keep it clean and safe for their patrons and guests! 5 stars all the way down, I have never once been disappointed while staying there!
A great place for family fun! I took my dad here as a first time kayaker and the staff made sure he was taken care of and comfortable through the whole experience. The entire campground is clean and well maintained. I appreciate that the campground also employs a very handsome gentleman to keep an eye on the campground and keep all of the patrons safe. You feel totally comfortable leaving your campsite and hitting the river with him around!
