North Overlook Campground About
Iowa, with its rolling landscapes, serene rivers, and impressive reservoirs, offers a fantastic array of opportunities for outdoor recreation. For Iowans, escaping to a campground provides the perfect opportunity to unplug, unwind, and reconnect with nature and loved ones. Whether it's the peaceful rhythm of a lakeside setting, the shade of mature trees, or the convenience of modern amenities, the state's campgrounds cater to a wide variety of preferences, making outdoor adventures accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Among the many excellent choices across the state, campgrounds managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are particularly well-regarded for their high standards of maintenance and often prime locations near major waterways. These facilities are designed to enhance public access to natural resources while providing safe and well-equipped spaces for camping, boating, fishing, and hiking. Their commitment to quality ensures a consistent and reliable experience for visitors.
In the heart of Central Iowa, nestled along the shores of Iowa's largest lake, Lake Red Rock, lies North Overlook Campground. This Corps of Engineers operated campground in Pella has consistently earned high praise from its visitors, establishing itself as a favorite for many Iowans seeking a blend of natural beauty and comfortable camping. Its reputation for cleanliness, spacious sites, and friendly hosts makes it a standout destination.
North Overlook Campground is strategically located at 1007 Highway T15, Pella, IA 50219, USA. This address places it directly on the north side of the impressive Red Rock Dam, offering campers direct access to Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest lake. The location is a significant draw for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities.
The campground's proximity to Pella, a city renowned for its charming Dutch heritage, ensures that campers have easy access to local amenities. Pella is just about 10 minutes away, providing excellent options for grocery shopping, unique dining experiences, and exploring its picturesque downtown. Additionally, the city of Knoxville, known as the "Sprint car capital of the world," is also within a short 15-minute drive, offering another nearby hub for services and entertainment.
While a small highway is nearby, as noted in reviews, and temporary detours might occur due to bridge construction (specifically on the bridge over Red Rock, affecting County Highway T-15 traffic), many campers find that any traffic noise does not significantly detract from their experience. The ease of access from major routes in Central Iowa makes North Overlook a convenient destination for residents from Des Moines (approximately an hour's drive) and other parts of the state, allowing for straightforward travel with RVs and trailers.

Customer Reviews
One of our favorites to camp at. We did pop-out tent and regular tent for the young adults. Clean bathrooms and nice beach nearby. Shady too. Yes, you will hear traffic nearby since the small hwy is right there and they are detouring with it around the construction on the bridge over Red Rock but that did not bother us. We would definitely come back over and over.
This is a COE campground. It is beautiful, quiet, big sites, amazing bathrooms with really clean showers. Camphosts are very nice. Each picnic table has a metal platform for your stove so that the heat doesn't melt the table tops. Water is available near the sites. We had an electric site. The tent area was really lush and spacious. The beach is right next to the campground, and there are walking trails close by. This is a definite must for camping.
The staff was great...the problem was the site EXTREMELY difficult to level. A large slope in the back due to wash out. It took almost 2 hours to get into a level position almost -5 on tje side and -6 for the back! The rest of the park was great. Clean restrooms/showers . Great biking and hiking trails.
Didn’t really plan this trip but so glad we went absolutely loved it! The grounds were well kept and the fact they had bathrooms and showers was awesome. They are right next to the trail and the beach. I will be going back for sure!
This campground has gravel sites. The sites on the inside of the loop are longer and more level. Sites along the outside are shorter, harder to get into, and less level. The cleaning in the bathhouse is not good at all. Be sure to where flip flops when showering. There is only electric hookup available. Five stars to the helpful hosts and to the raccoon antics! (Guard your food!)
