Olustee, FL. Hog Pen Landing About
For those Floridians seeking an authentic escape into nature, a true rustic retreat away from the crowds and bustling RV parks, Olustee, FL’s Hog Pen Landing offers an unparalleled camping experience. Nestled within the serene beauty of the Osceola National Forest, Hog Pen Landing is not your typical campground. It's a quiet, relaxing haven designed for campers who appreciate simplicity, natural surroundings, and the genuine tranquility of the outdoors. If you envision mornings waking up to the sounds of nature, evenings gathered around a crackling campfire, and days spent by the water, Hog Pen Landing is a destination you’ll want to explore.
This campground caters to a variety of camping styles, from traditional tent pitching to accommodating larger recreational vehicles, all while maintaining a charmingly rustic atmosphere. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with yourself, your family, and the abundant natural beauty that North Florida has to offer. Locals often seek out these more primitive spots for their genuine outdoor feel, and Hog Pen Landing consistently delivers on that promise, making it a beloved destination among those in the know.
Hog Pen Landing is strategically situated on Nat'l Forest Rd 277, Lake City, FL 32055, placing it directly within the expansive and beautiful Osceola National Forest. This location is a significant advantage for campers, as it ensures immediate access to vast tracts of preserved wilderness, offering endless opportunities for exploration and immersion in Florida’s unique ecosystems. While the address indicates Lake City, the campground is specifically found within the Olustee area of the forest, providing a sense of seclusion and removal from urban environments.
Accessibility to Hog Pen Landing is generally straightforward. National Forest Roads, while sometimes unpaved, are typically hard-packed and traversable for most vehicles, including larger RVs and trailers, as confirmed by a reviewer who brought a 35’ 5th wheel. However, it's worth noting that like many unpaved roads in natural areas, it can develop some potholes, especially after heavy rains. Despite this, reviews indicate that the road generally dries out quickly, minimizing prolonged issues. Its location within the National Forest system means that signage might be less elaborate than at commercial campgrounds, emphasizing the "hidden gem" aspect. However, once you arrive, the clear layout of the sites and friendly host presence makes settling in easy. For Floridians, its proximity to Lake City means essential supplies are not too far away, striking a good balance between remote wilderness and necessary conveniences, making it an ideal spot for a quick weekend escape or an extended stay.
Hog Pen Landing focuses on providing essential services that enhance the rustic camping experience, emphasizing self-sufficiency and minimal environmental impact.
Friendly and Helpful Camp Host: A consistent highlight from visitors is the presence of a friendly and helpful camp host. Their welcoming demeanor and willingness to assist contribute significantly to the positive atmosphere of the campground, often offering local tips and ensuring a smooth stay.
Pit Toilets: For restroom facilities, Hog Pen Landing provides well-maintained pit toilets. While primitive, reviewers note them as being well-kept and clean, which is a testament to the care taken at the campground.
Bear Boxes / Bear-Proof Trash Cans: To ensure the safety of both campers and wildlife, bear boxes or bear-proof trash cans are available. These are crucial for proper food storage and waste disposal in a natural environment where bears and other animals might be present.
Picnic Tables: Most, but not all, sites are equipped with a picnic table, offering a convenient surface for dining, games, or simply organizing your campsite.
Fire Rings: Similar to picnic tables, most sites feature an in-ground fire ring, allowing campers to safely build campfires for warmth, cooking, and ambiance. Campers should bring their own firewood as it is not sold on-site.
No Hookups: True to its rustic nature, Hog Pen Landing does not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups at the campsites. This appeals to experienced boondockers and those seeking a more primitive camping adventure.
Dump Station Access: While not directly on-site, a convenient dump station is available at the nearby Ocean Pond Campground for a nominal fee of $5. This allows campers, especially those with RVs, to properly dispose of their waste before or after their stay.
Hog Pen Landing stands out with several key features and highlights that draw campers seeking a particular type of outdoor experience in Florida.
Hidden, Rustic Campground: This is perhaps its most significant appeal. It’s described as a "great hidden rustic campground," offering a quiet and relaxing atmosphere that many modern campgrounds lack. It’s truly off the beaten path, providing a sense of seclusion and genuine connection with nature.
Very Quiet and Relaxing: Visitors consistently praise the profound quietness of Hog Pen Landing. This makes it an ideal destination for those looking to unwind, de-stress, and escape the noise of daily life. The peaceful environment is perfect for reading, meditating, or simply enjoying the sounds of the forest.
Lakeside Campsites: The campground boasts sites "right on the lake" (Ocean Pond), with some offering beautiful views and direct access to the water. This is a major highlight for fishing enthusiasts, paddle boarders, or anyone who enjoys being near the water.
Spacious and Varied Sites: With 11 sites (though not numbered), Hog Pen Landing offers a good variety in size, capable of accommodating everything from tents to larger motorhomes up to 38 feet. The sites are also "spaced out nicely," ensuring privacy and a feeling of individual space.
Accommodates Tents to Large RVs: Despite being rustic, the campground is versatile, welcoming various camping setups. This flexibility, especially for larger rigs (like a 35’ 5th wheel, as noted by a reviewer), is a significant advantage for Floridians with diverse camping equipment.
Good Solar Potential: For those relying on solar power, the campground offers sufficient open areas to pull "enough solar," even during extended stays. This is a crucial feature for off-grid camping enthusiasts.
Proximity to Ocean Pond Campground’s Amenities: While Hog Pen Landing is primitive, the nearby Ocean Pond Campground offers a dump station for $5, providing a convenient service for longer stays. This allows campers to enjoy the rustic charm of Hog Pen while still having access to essential waste disposal facilities.
Hog Pen Landing offers straightforward and attractive pricing, making it a very accessible option for campers in Florida looking for a value-packed experience. The standard cost to camp is $10 per night. This affordable rate makes it highly competitive, especially for a lakeside, rustic campground within a National Forest.
A notable promotion or special offer available is for those holding a Senior Pass (America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass). With this pass, the nightly camping fee is reduced to $5, offering a significant discount for eligible individuals. This makes Hog Pen Landing an even more enticing option for seniors who enjoy the outdoors and wish to camp economically.
It is important to remember that all fees are paid via an envelope system, and campers should bring exact change, as there are no facilities on-site to make change. Furthermore, reservations are not accepted; all sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This means that while there aren't traditional "promotions" in the commercial sense, the consistently low daily rate, coupled with the senior discount, provides excellent value for a truly peaceful and scenic camping experience in the heart of the Osceola National Forest. The "promotion" is the ability to enjoy such a serene and well-maintained primitive campground at such a reasonable cost, especially for those who qualify for the senior pass.

Customer Reviews
Was here for fishing. It is a beautiful place. We didn’t camp. That said the campsites are right on the lake and spaced out nicely. The restroom seems well kept.
Great hidden rustic campground, very quiet and relaxing. Friendly host who is very helpful. 11 sites (not numbered) ranging in size to accommodate tents to 38’ motorhome. (We have a 35’ 5th wheel) Most sites have a picnic table and fire ring, but a couple do not. Pit toilets, bear boxes and no hookups. Dump station available at nearby Ocean Pond Campground for $5. Cost to camp is $10 per night, unless you have the senior pass, then $5). Only down fall, if it rains a lot, sites can get muddy, but it does dry out quickly. Road is hard packed, but does have some pot holes. We stayed for 10 days and were able to pull enough solar, only had three cloudy, rainy days where we ran the generator.
They've been closed since Hurricane season. Can't camp.
