For Wisconsin locals, the call of the outdoors is a familiar tune. From the vast forests to the serene rivers and extensive trail systems, the Badger State offers countless opportunities for camping and outdoor recreation. Tucked away in the charming city of Elroy, Schultz City Park Campground presents itself as a practical and accessible option for those seeking a refreshing escape. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Schultz City Park Campground, detailing its unique location, the services it offers, its key features, and why it might be a suitable choice for residents across Wisconsin looking for their next adventure.
Schultz City Park Campground offers a blend of convenient access to outdoor activities and the basic comforts of a city park setting. It caters to a range of campers, from those embarking on multi-day biking excursions along the famous rail trails to families seeking a simple, affordable getaway. While it's important to set expectations based on the nature of a city park campground, its direct proximity to natural attractions makes it a notable destination. This overview is designed to offer factual insights into what campers can expect, helping Wisconsin locals decide if Schultz City Park Campground aligns with their outdoor preferences.
Schultz City Park Campground is ideally situated at 301 S Main St, Elroy, WI 53929, USA. Elroy, a small city in Juneau County, Wisconsin, holds a unique position as a hub for several popular state bike trails. This location makes the campground exceptionally appealing to outdoor enthusiasts, particularly cyclists.
The most significant highlight of its location is its direct proximity to the 400 State Trail. As one review notes, the "400 trail across the street" makes it incredibly convenient for bikers who can literally step off the trail and into their campsite. The 400 State Trail, a 22-mile crushed limestone path, is part of a larger network of interconnected rail trails in Wisconsin, including the famous Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the Juneau County Omaha Trail. This means cyclists can embark on extensive journeys and find a ready resting spot at Schultz City Park Campground.
Beyond cycling, the campground is located "right on a cute river," likely the Baraboo River, offering opportunities for river enjoyment. While the campground is within Elroy city limits, providing access to local amenities, visitors should be aware that payment for sites typically requires a trip "a mile into town" to the city office. While this might be a minor inconvenience for tired bikers, the overall accessibility of Elroy via state highways (such as 71, 80, and 82) makes it reachable from various parts of Wisconsin. For example, it's about 60 miles from La Crosse and 75 miles from Madison, making it a feasible driving distance for many Wisconsin residents seeking an outdoor retreat. The presence of the city pool right next to the campground also adds to its family-friendly appeal and accessibility.
Schultz City Park Campground, as a municipal park facility, offers fundamental services geared towards a comfortable camping experience:
It is important for prospective campers to be aware of the payment process, which requires going into town, and to confirm current rates ($28 a night for electric sites, as noted in a review) and any additional fees directly with the city of Elroy.
Schultz City Park Campground boasts several features that make it an attractive option for Wisconsin locals:
While the campground offers many positives, it's also important to acknowledge areas of concern raised by a past reviewer. These include the inconvenience of off-site payment, the tightness of some sites, and potential issues with noise control and enforcement of quiet hours. Prospective campers, especially those traveling with families, might want to inquire about specific rules and current enforcement practices directly with the park management.
As a municipal city park campground, Schultz City Park Campground typically does not run large-scale promotions or special offers in the same way private campgrounds might. Its appeal generally lies in its consistent affordability and prime location. However, visitors might inquire about:
The most reliable way to ascertain any current pricing details or limited offers would be to contact the city office responsible for the campground directly using the provided phone number.

Its primary appeal lies in its strategic location and affordability, making it an excellent base for exploring the rich natural landscape of the state.
The immediate access to the renowned 400 State Trail is a game-changer for Wisconsin's avid cyclists and hikers. Being able to literally camp steps away from a major rail trail network means less time commuting and more time enjoying the picturesque routes that crisscross the state. This convenience, combined with the presence of the Baraboo River, makes it an ideal spot for those who cherish active, outdoor vacations.
Beyond the trails, the campground's integration into Schultz City Park provides significant value, especially for families. The adjacent city pool, large play area, and sports courts offer readily available entertainment for children, allowing parents to relax while kids expend energy. This makes it a cost-effective and fun option for family getaways, providing amenities often found in more expensive private campgrounds but within a public park setting. The affordability of the sites further enhances its suitability, enabling more Wisconsin families to enjoy camping experiences without breaking the bank.
While a small city park campground might come with certain characteristics like first-come, first-serve sites and specific payment procedures, its core offerings of location, affordability, and family-friendly amenities make it a prime choice for Badger State residents. Schultz City Park Campground offers a genuine Wisconsin outdoor experience, perfect for creating lasting memories on the trails and by the river.

had a number to call first come first serve electric sites right on a cute river. 400 trail across the street. 28 bucks a night
May 01, 2025 · Ron HeizmanThis place had potential but it was a struggle from the start. We came up the 400 trail from reedsburg and we're ready to be done for the day. This place isn't far off the trail and the city pool is right there. A big setback is that you can't pay for or reserve a site from this location. You have to go a mile into town. In a car, no big deal but when you've been biking and your tired, it's an inconvenience. The experience didn't end there. I realize they have no control over who stays but they need a host of someone that helps enforce the rules. We were going to be on our bikes again the next day and went to bed just before quiet hours. We don't expect people to be quiet prior but after 10 pm absolutely, respect quiet hours. A family came in with three dogs, several kids and a whole lot of foul language. They were yelling across the park until after midnight. Lots of profanity and offensive talk. I had two children with me and they were subjected to a night of poor behavior. On our bikes, we can't just pack up and go. We didn't want to call it in because again, we can't just leave. Their dogs barked and whined most of the time and they did nothing to correct the issue. First thing in the morning they started back up. Another guy, apparently just using the shower, let his dogs go and they came in jumping on us and pooping in our site. He had his dogs in the shower with him and then he left. A bonus, the grass was soft and well groomed, the pool was nice, having a shower was nice. The park got use from our son. We just didn't feel terribly safe with the family that came in late (almost dark).
Aug 04, 2024 · Melissa KandikoNo shade where we're at. No after hours number to call to complain about someone running their dog loose and teasing our dogs who are tied up. Three times around the area in a side by side, even after it was obvious the first time around that it was really upsetting our dogs. Then the dog came back by itself to growl in my 4.5 month only 5 lb puppy's face while she was confined in a pen. I had to chase it away.
Sep 02, 2022 · Arlene BrandisWe had a fantastic time camping here! It's a mowed lawn with fire rings and picnic tables. Within a 100 yards of the campsites there's pool a that we swam at for $3, bathrooms with showers, and a huge playground for the kids. I will be recommending this campground to others. Thanks!
Jun 17, 2022 · Sean MulbrandonMust register at the El Roy Commons, but a great park with nice tent sites, a municipal pool, and RV concrete pads. Also a river winds right through the park and sand hill cranes visit daily. Also, right along the “400” bike trail.
