Scoutshire Woods About
Deep within the rolling, wooded hills of Citronelle, Alabama, lies Scoutshire Woods, a historic campground that has served as a cherished outdoor retreat for generations. Originally established in 1912, and opening as a Girl Scout camp in 1945, this expansive 56-acre property is more than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's a testament to outdoor adventure, personal growth, and a connection with nature. While primarily known for its rich history with the Girl Scouts, Scoutshire Woods also opens its doors for various other group camping experiences, offering a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Mobile County.
Scoutshire Woods offers a rustic yet engaging camping experience, focusing on traditional outdoor activities and fostering a sense of community. Its centerpiece, Echo Lake, provides a picturesque backdrop for many of the camp's activities. While some elements might lean towards a more traditional, perhaps less manicured, camping style, the essence of Scoutshire Woods lies in its vast natural landscape and the opportunities it provides for unplugging and enjoying the wilderness.
Scoutshire Woods is nestled at 6051 Scoutshire Camp Rd, Citronelle, AL 36522, USA. Citronelle is a city in northern Mobile County, known for its timber resources and a more rural, relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling urban center of Mobile. This location places the campground in a truly natural setting, surrounded by pines and magnolias, offering a genuine escape into Alabama's woodlands.
While Scoutshire Woods provides a secluded feel, it is still reasonably accessible. Citronelle itself is located off Highway 45, which connects directly to Mobile to the south. This means that while you're enjoying the tranquility of the camp, you're not entirely cut off from amenities. The drive to Mobile, for example, is manageable for supplies or if you wish to explore city attractions. The journey to the camp will take you along Scoutshire Camp Road, leading you deeper into the wooded landscape, setting the tone for an authentic outdoor experience.
As a traditional campground with a strong historical connection to outdoor education, Scoutshire Woods provides services that support a rustic yet functional camping experience. The focus here is on facilitating outdoor activities and group gatherings rather than extensive resort-style amenities. Based on its identity as a camp, you can generally expect:
- Various Sleeping Accommodations: While the question specifically mentions "campground" for RVs, Scoutshire Woods offers a range of sleeping options, including cabins, yurts, platform tents, and teepees, which might be available for rent depending on the specific program or group booking. The ability to bring your own RV or tent would depend on their specific policies for non-program-based camping.
- Waterfront Access (Echo Lake): The large Echo Lake is a central feature, offering opportunities for water-based activities like swimming and canoeing. Access to the lake is a key service for campers.
- Communal Facilities: As a camp, it likely has communal dining facilities or areas, restrooms, and shower facilities to support groups.
- Program-Specific Support: For groups participating in organized programs (like the Girl Scouts), the camp provides structured activities and necessary equipment.
- Basic Utilities at Designated Areas: For RVs, if permitted, basic hookups (water/electricity) might be available at designated sites, though this is less explicitly highlighted than the focus on traditional camping.
It's important for prospective visitors, especially those with RVs, to directly confirm the specific services and hookup availability for individual or group RV camping outside of organized camp programs, as the primary infrastructure is geared towards traditional camp activities and cabin/tent lodging.
Scoutshire Woods truly shines through its natural features and the array of outdoor activities it facilitates. Its long history adds a unique charm, making it more than just a place to stay, but an experience in itself:
- Historic Camp Setting: As a site that has hosted campers for decades, particularly the Girl Scouts, it carries a unique historical ambiance that adds to the outdoor adventure.
- Echo Lake: The beautiful 12-acre Echo Lake is a major highlight, perfect for canoeing, swimming, and offering a serene focal point for the camp.
- Wooded Hills and Trails: The 56 to 68 acres of rolling, wooded hills provide ample opportunities for hiking, nature exploration, and a true immersion in the forest environment.
- Variety of Outdoor Activities: The camp is equipped for a wide range of activities, including archery, orienteering, paddleboarding, and even ziplining, making it ideal for active groups.
- Horseback Riding: A notable feature, as mentioned in its history, is the availability of horseback riding, a unique offering for a camp.
- Unplugged Environment: With reports of limited cell phone signal, it encourages campers to disconnect from devices and fully engage with their surroundings and fellow campers.
- Space for Group Activities: The expansive grounds and various facilities are well-suited for group events, retreats, and organized camping experiences, including scouting events.
While some reviews mention challenges with overgrown areas for fishing and rules regarding tent placement near RVs, these aspects highlight the traditional, rugged nature of the camp, which might appeal to some while being a consideration for others. The natural environment is clearly emphasized, even if it requires some adaptability from campers.
Given that Scoutshire Woods primarily operates as a Girl Scout camp and a venue for various group camping activities, promotions and special offers might differ from those of a typical commercial RV park. Instead of general public discounts, offers are more likely to be structured around:
- Group Rates: Discounts or special packages for large groups, organizations (like scouting troops, youth groups, churches), or educational programs.
- Seasonal Programs: Specific rates for different summer camp sessions or themed outdoor adventure programs offered throughout the year.
- Early Bird Registration: For structured summer camps or organized events, there might be benefits for early registration.
- Affiliation-Based Benefits: If you are part of a scouting organization or a recognized educational group, there may be specific rates or access privileges.
It's important to understand that public, casual RV camping might be subject to different rules or availability than organized group events. Therefore, for any inquiries about booking the campground, especially for RV or tent camping, it is highly recommended to contact the management directly to ascertain if and how individual or small group camping is accommodated, and what any associated rates or offers might be.

Thanks to the Girl Scouts for letting the BSA use this beautiful, historic camp for our 2023 winter camp.
WAY to many weeds and over growth to fish!! It's great if all you want to do is sit in or around your camper! Kids can't put a tent next to parents RV, they would have to be across the lake where anyone can come in!! Will not go back unless they change their rules and clean up the lake!! Plus the trash!!
O'Rourke elementary school had field trips out here circa 2007. Was pretty fun, good memory
This place is huge and lots and lots of fun!
