Sherburne County Camp About

For generations of Minnesotans, the name Sherburne County Camp evokes a flood of cherished childhood memories. This isn't just any campground; it's a place deeply woven into the fabric of youth development and outdoor education, particularly through its long-standing association with 4-H programs. Many of us who grew up in Minnesota can recall spending idyllic summers here, learning, playing, and forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. It was a pivotal part of growing up for countless individuals, offering a unique blend of nature immersion and structured activities.

The camp's history is one of resilience and community spirit. It holds a special place in the hearts of former campers and counselors, a sentiment clearly expressed in the shared experiences of those who frequented its grounds. Despite past challenges, including a regrettable incident of vandalism, the unwavering commitment to its mission to serve youth has ensured its enduring legacy. The excitement surrounding its rebuilding and re-opening, as noted in previous years, speaks volumes about its importance to the local community. It’s a testament to the fact that while structures may change, the spirit and purpose of Sherburne County Camp remain strong, poised to create new memories for future generations.

While some reviews mention "Lake Ann was a disappointment," it's important to understand the broader context of the camp's primary function. Sherburne County Camp has historically been a dedicated youth camp, often affiliated with organizations like 4-H, rather than a public recreational campground open to all for individual site rentals. This focus on structured youth programs means its offerings and facilities are tailored to provide enriching experiences for specific groups, rather than typical public camping amenities. Its enduring presence underscores its value as a foundational place for children and young adults to connect with nature and develop essential life skills in a supervised and supportive environment.

Location and Accessibility

Sherburne County Camp is conveniently located at 16885 Day Use Rd, Big Lake, MN 55309, USA. This placement makes it highly accessible for families and organizations throughout the greater Minnesota region, particularly those in the central part of the state. Big Lake is a community situated west of the Twin Cities, offering a relatively short and straightforward drive for many urban and suburban residents.

The camp's address, including "Day Use Rd," suggests a design that facilitates easy access for daily programs, although it has historically supported overnight stays for youth camps. Its setting in Sherburne County places it within a region known for its natural beauty, including various lakes, forests, and state lands like the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge and Sand Dunes State Forest. While the camp itself provides a focused environment for its programs, its proximity to these larger natural areas allows for potential supplementary outdoor activities or day trips for campers, depending on the specific program curriculum.

For those traveling by road, Big Lake is accessible via major routes, including U.S. Highway 10 and Sherburne County roads, ensuring a smooth journey. This ease of access is crucial for youth camps, as it simplifies transportation logistics for participants and their families, making the camp a practical choice for regional educational and recreational programs. The location truly offers a balance of being 'away from it all' for an immersive camp experience, while still being within a reasonable driving distance for convenience.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given that Sherburne County Camp primarily operates as a facility for youth programs and potentially as a rental venue for groups, it is unlikely to offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a public campground might. Instead, its value is often structured around its program fees or group rental rates.

For 4-H or other affiliated youth organizations, the "special offer" often comes in the form of subsidized program costs, scholarships, or member-exclusive rates, which make these formative experiences more accessible to a wider range of participants. These are typically managed through the organizations themselves, rather than directly by the camp as a public promotion.

Groups looking to rent the camp for their own retreats, educational programs, or events may find competitive pricing for facilities, especially when booking for longer periods or during off-peak seasons. Inquire directly with the camp management for detailed pricing structures for group rentals and any potential discounts for non-profit organizations or recurring bookings. The true "offer" of Sherburne County Camp lies in its specialized infrastructure and dedicated environment for youth development and group gatherings, providing a structured and supportive setting that may not be available at general public campgrounds.

Spent many of summers there as a 4-H camper and a few years as a camp counselor. Was a big part of growing up. I was severely upset when vandals burned it last year and ruined a great experience for a lot of youth! It will be nice to see it rebuilt and back this summer (2019)!
