Imagine evenings under a canopy of stars, the quiet rustle of leaves, and the camaraderie of fellow outdoor lovers. One satisfied camper perfectly captured this sentiment, stating, "Spent 4 nights here and will definitely be back! The vault toilets were the least buggies I've ever seen and the water pumps work! Great spot in mid-western Michigan." This feedback highlights the dedication to maintaining a clean and functional rustic environment, ensuring your focus remains on enjoying the natural surroundings rather than worrying about basic necessities. Whether you're an experienced equestrian planning a trail riding adventure or a family looking to introduce your kids to the joys of traditional camping, Silver Creek County Park/Campground offers an inviting and memorable experience right here in your home state.
Silver Creek County Park/Campground is conveniently situated at 3900 134th Ave, Hamilton, MI 49419, USA. This prime location in Allegan County places it squarely in mid-western Michigan, an area celebrated for its natural beauty, agricultural landscapes, and recreational opportunities. Hamilton, while a smaller community, serves as a gateway to the broader West Michigan region, making the campground accessible from various points across the state.
For campers driving in, the park is easily reachable via well-maintained county roads, ensuring a smooth journey for vehicles and horse trailers alike. Its proximity to major thoroughfares like US-31 and I-196 means that cities such as Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, and Battle Creek are all within a reasonable drive, making it an ideal weekend getaway or a longer vacation destination for Michiganders. For example, Grand Rapids is approximately a 33-minute drive, Kalamazoo around 50 minutes, and Muskegon about 55 minutes.
The beauty of Silver Creek's location extends beyond its road access. The park boasts 450 feet of frontage on Silver Creek itself, a spring-fed trout stream, adding to the serene ambiance and offering fishing opportunities. Furthermore, the park's most significant draw for many is its direct connection to an extensive trail system. With 7 miles of horse trails within the county park and many more in the attached Allegan State Game Area, equestrians have access to over 25 miles of riding trails, providing endless exploration possibilities through diverse landscapes of wooded areas, rolling sandy hills, and open prairies. This interconnectedness makes Silver Creek County Park a true hub for outdoor enthusiasts in West Michigan.
Campsites: Silver Creek County Park offers 75 rustic campsites, 65 of which are specifically designed for horse camping. These sites are generously spaced amidst large, old-growth trees, providing ample shade and a sense of privacy. Each equestrian site includes picket poles for high lines, a picnic table, and a fire pit, catering to the specific needs of horse campers.
Year-Round Camping: Both Silver Creek Campground and Ely Lake Campground (another Allegan County Park) are open year-round, allowing for camping in all seasons, including the quieter and often beautiful fall and winter months. During the off-season (December 1st through March 31st), campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with payment made via a fee tube at the entrance. Note that during the off-season, campgrounds are not staffed, and restrooms/roads are not maintained, though vault toilets remain open.
Water Access: Hand pumps are conveniently located throughout the campground, providing potable water for campers. While there’s no piped running water at individual sites, these pumps are well-maintained and functional, as attested by a previous visitor.
Vault Toilets: For a rustic camping experience, Silver Creek provides clean and well-maintained vault toilets throughout the campground. One reviewer specifically noted these as the "least buggies" they'd ever seen, indicating a strong commitment to cleanliness even in a primitive setting.
Trash Disposal: Dumpsters are available within the campground for convenient trash disposal, helping to keep the park clean and enjoyable for everyone.
Day Use Area: For those not staying overnight, a day-use area is available, offering picnic tables and grills for day visitors. A day-use trail fee of $5 applies per person (or per horse for equestrians) for access to the trails.
Campsite Reservations: Campsites can be reserved online or by phone for dates between April 1st and November. Reservations must be made at least 5 business days in advance. Unreserved campsites are available for walk-ins on a first-come, first-served basis. It's important for walk-ins to check for "RESERVED" signs posted early in the week on site posts to avoid occupying a reserved spot.
Extensive Horseback Riding Trails: This is arguably the biggest highlight. Silver Creek County Park offers 7 miles of trails within its boundaries, directly connecting to over 25 miles of additional equestrian trails in the adjacent Allegan State Game Area. These trails are well-marked, maintained, and wind through heavily wooded, mildly rolling sandy hills and open prairies, making for an exceptional riding experience suitable for all skill levels.
Rustic Camping Experience: For those who love traditional, no-frills camping, Silver Creek provides a genuine rustic environment. It's about disconnecting from modern conveniences and immersing oneself in nature, with basic amenities that are clean and functional.
Well-Spaced Campsites: Reviewers praise the generous spacing between sites, which contributes to a sense of privacy and tranquility, even when the campground is busy. "Well spaced room between sites," noted one happy camper.
Year-Round Outdoor Opportunities: The park's year-round operation allows for diverse experiences. While popular for summer camping and riding, the trails remain open in the fall for stunning leaf-peeping rides and can be explored for winter activities (though services are limited).
Friendly Environment: While specific reviews on overall friendliness are limited, the nature of equestrian communities and rustic campgrounds often fosters a welcoming and helpful atmosphere among fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
Access to Silver Creek: The park's frontage on Silver Creek offers opportunities for fishing for trout or simply enjoying the peaceful sounds of the running water.
Managed by Allegan County Parks: Being a county park, it benefits from local oversight, ensuring a commitment to maintenance and community benefit.
Events and Activities: The Allegan County Parks calendar often lists events at Silver Creek, such as poker rides or other equestrian gatherings, which can enhance the camping experience for visitors. For example, "Fun With Poker Ride at Silver Creek County Park" and "Oak Leaf Run at Silver Creek County Park" are recurring events.

Spent 4 nights here and will definitely be back! The vault toilets were the least buggies I've ever seen and the water pumps work! Great spot in mid-western Michigan.
Great rustic horse camp. Well spaced room between sites. 7 miles horse trails in county park, many more in the attached state park.
We have camped here for years, it's rustic , lots of marked out trails to ride, and a good family place to camp. Outhouses only and you pump water, my kids grew up camping here and think it's the only way to camp
Cute campground! Lots of empty sites for the the weekend. Easy car ride to Saugatuck Dunes and other beaches.
Great place to camp and get away for the weekend. It's mainly for equestrian use so the sites are bigger than usual, and they do charge $17.00 a night, but I've been out with just a tent or my teardrop camper and had a great time. I've not been there during peak season so I cannot comment on how busy it is during that time, but mid-to-late fall there's always quite a few sites open. And with over 70 to choose from, you are sure to find a spot that's nice and secluded, with plenty of "buffer" between you and the closest occupied site.
